Like many of comments already, who gives two hoots about some invisible coating if there’s still the glaring eye sore of the notch?

Since were are in the topic of cameras, you’re missing its been rumored at least on three reports for the ‘Triple lens’ camera to make a debut next year. I honestly believe this could be a decent camera upgrade with stereoscopic imaging _If_ it proves to be true.

But this is still nothing more than a progression. It will be a new ability for an existing feature.

And it’s starting to sound like razor blades on a shaver: Don’t settle for 2 blades when real experts say you need 3 (and then 4, then 5 etc, etc).

I'd much rather have no camera bump on the back than a hidden front camera.

Not sure what this is supposed to mean. They stated they didn't like the notch, so it wouldn't be surprising if they didn't own an iPhone with a notch.

Are you saying if they had a phone with a notch they would like the notch?
I'm saying if he had an iPhone with a notch he'd realize it's a complete nonissue and you don't even notice it at all unless you specifically think to look for it. No one with a notched iPhone complains about it. Ever. It's always non owners whining about something with zero experience with the product they're whining about.

That’s what technology is, progression. Regardless, it still would be a hardware change as well if a ‘triple lens’ camera does Debut. You have to take in account that Apple rations their features. Some are under the notion that hardware should be drastically changed every year, and that’s not how Smart phones upgrades operate, and certainly in most cases, not with Apple.

I want a vantablack iPhone
OMG can I pay someone to make this happen?

Yeah, I'd like it if it was retooled. I wanted the main camera to be wider and this year it got a little wider. In a perfect world I think 0.75X, 1.5X, and 4X would be what I would want out of a three camera system. But it will probably be 1X, 2X, 3X. But for better computational photography wouldn't you want more of a triangle arrangement of the lenses to get more 3D info along an additional axis? Or maybe that benefit is less as one of them would be 3X and therefore be too zoomed in to provide useful data for an entire wide scene. Although it's possible that you could use the 2X with the 3X for portrait mode that has even better background separation using a more natural, real bokeh. But you're going to have to be backed up a ways from you subject to use it.

Side note, but I kinda fear they're going to put the third lens into the Max only, and maybe raise the price of the Max by $50 to make it more like the Plus was before which always had the better camera system, whether it was OIS early on or the dual camera system later—and they could argue there just isn't enough room in the 5.8" model for it. Would be a shame because I like how there are currently two premium devices that are identical in specs except display size and battery life because the Max is bigger. I just hate having to be uncomfortable with a larger device to get the best camera.

Lol I’m not sure where you think that owners simply don’t complain about it. I own X’s and XS’s and I still actively complain about it in my own thoughts because I do not like it. I feel it’s implemented poorly. I don’t however continually distribute my annoyance of it as it serves no purpose to anyone. And I’m not saying that they shouldn’t have done a notch, I understand there was a compromise to achieve their design goal. But I would have liked to see the ears go black in certain scenarios where content is needlessly displayed in them. I’m also not saying those who tolerate it haven’t been able to see past it like you. The notch is hugely subjective to the user and the user experience is likewise subjective because of it.

In my fantasy ideal world I would have them remove the front facing camera and Face ID and do in-display Touch ID with no notch because I hardly use my front facing camera and like being able to quickly unlock my iPhone when it's on a desk without having to scan my face. But they will never do that.

Aye I do hope that TouchID comes back in some form, I've had FaceID for a week now and it's already grating on me a bit, feels so much slower and more awkward than even the 5S five (!) years ago.

Well good, because not being able to see the camera lens on my phone is a far, far bigger problem to solve than an iMac update...

Then will it be easier to have photos with slanted eyes / eyes looking into the wrong direction? cos the camera is nowhere to be seen

What we all want is the camera to be hiding behind a subset of pixels that turn off when the camera is in use. AKA an all display phone with the front facing camera hiding.
We also want to get rid of the notch. So any improvements that lead us in that direction are good. Being able to cover the camera lens and still have it take photos like nothing is in front of it, is a good thing.

As if this is people's number one concern... Seriously Apple, I can name at least 5 major things you guys need to do with the iPhone that are more important than hiding the front facing camera.

"iPhone camera lens supplier Largan Precision is developing" You should try reading the article. Just because a company that supplies Apple is developing a new technology, doesn't mean Apple is behind it.

Apple design chief Jony Ive has long dreamed of an iPhone that resembles a single sheet of glass, and hiding the front camera lens would be yet another step towards that goal, even if it sounds like an insignificant change. This is the first time we've heard this rumor, however, so treat it with some skepticism.

I'm ready for this dream Jony. Make it happen! :):):)

All the sensors (maybe not the speaker or mic) could be hidden by doing something similar to how teleprompters use a 45 degree mirror glass to reflect the light in one direction that no one else can see. Obviously this idea would need to made minuscule but it’s a start....

For the notch, I disagree. If the aesthetics of the phone is a high priority for someone, it doesn't matter if the notch goes unnoticed while using it.

Just like anything when aesthetics is involved.

When comparing two cars with similar specs, and one aesthetically pleasing, and one is not, would you tell a car shopper that once they drive the ugly car, they would realize it's a complete nonissue and they wouldn't even notice it at all unless they specifically think to look for it?

This could be applied to many things in life......

Can never happen. There has to be a bezel or notch for cameras / sensors. No way around it.

Apple has pattents to get around, there are prototypes that get around it. There’s a way around it, it’s definitely possible, it’s just not possible in a consumer product YET

But that example doesn’t work.

The notch and bezels are not just an iPhone problem, every phone has them, there isn’t one phone without them. You just have to pick weather you like a forehead and chin or a notch, there’s no other choice right now

Someone will produce it in the very near future for sure with the intent to at least get it out there. Though Apple and most likely Samsung will be the two companies that will make it re-standardize product development with their very strict history of ensuring they've gotten it optimized as best as they can to uphold consumer expectations they've already established for themselves.
