It's About Understanding How It Works

I would most definately download it if I had the remote...otherwise its just stupid. Hopefully apple will come out with some type of usb remote or one that works via bluetooth.
For me, It's not about needing a remote. It's about understanding how it works and what improvements it needs. Font adjustment and which screen to come up on would be much needed improvements from where I sit. :)

hmmm...

I think I might wait for iLife 06 (January release likely?)... It's possible that Front Row will be a big new part of that, including this rumoured "Airport Express with Video"...

Airport Express with Front Row; wirelessly stream video/photos/music/DVDs to your TV from your Mac in the other room. :D

So smart.

Okay, so it's totally pointless for me to use, but still pretty fun. I'm really hoping that this comes out in iLife '06 with a remote, by then I should be closer towards my goal of a cinema display, and that would be amazing.

"a friend" told me that this works wonderfully with the ATi remote wonder control. You can even cause it to launch by just pushing a button on the remote.

and man wouldn't those new iMac users be screwed since they would have to have their iMac with them when they were streaming or the IR remote wouldn't work.

Or you have to keep the Airport within range of something if that were to have the IR (unlikely)

If this comes as a part of iLife '06, and the price stays the same, great. If Apple tries to sell Front Row separately, it'll kind of be a joke.

It's a nice app, but because it comes from a "legit" company, it is seriously under-powered when compared to a lot of free products out there for Windows, Xbox, or whatnot, where they care less about being "right" and more about giving users as many options as possible. No means of playing DVDs ripped to a hard drive, and no means of running subtitle files for videos are two big negatives for me.

For videos to show up in the Music Videos main catagory, they have to be marked as so under iTunes, but of course iTunes won't take all files into its library. For videos that I got to add using the reference link "trick," playback was pretty poor.

Right now, I see Front Row as a really odd program. It really isn't all that useful just stuck on the iMac, and while it'll get more useful when put on a Mac Mini, again, it is a pretty bare-bones app feature wise, and really gives you Windows envy. Where I see this shining is on an iHome, with a built-in TV tuner and full PVR support.

What I'd like to see:
1) Ability to use non-QuickTime players to play the video files in the Movies section, so that I can get things like subtitle files working, or at least support for subtitle files working in QuickTime.
Change of happening: None

2) Ability to play ripped DVDs through Front Row.
Chance of happening: None

3) Ability to directly access a set list of apps through Front Row, once that would go good on a TV, such as Stepmania.
Chance of happening: Little - None

4) Better tagging support for the files I already have, so I can tag TV shows as TV shows and Music Videos as Music Videos in or out of iTunes. (Using iTunes where QuickTime Player should be used is going to turn into a real mess.)
Chance of happening: Since Apple wants you to only work with stuff you've purchased from them, None.

5) PVR abilities.
Chance of happening: ???

6) Ability to have music videos play continuously, and also shuffled.
Chance of happening: Possibly already - this might require the remote and its Menu button. Anybody?

It would be very easy for a new video-streaming Airport Express to have a plug where an IR receiver could be plugged into it. Problem solved.

How about an IR Reciver built in? Problem, Solved (Through Innovation)

i wonder if apple sees a slight surge in Mac Mini sales after this leak LOL

also i was waiting on centre stage and that other one iTheatre thingy

but not any longer

Ir = Stupid!

Just wanted to say one more time how stupid I think it is that FrontRow is IR. A backwards compatible BT remote would have made so much more sense. It could have been packaged and sold immediately to those of us (most of us) with a Mac that already has BT. If it was $30 or so with the software I would already have ordered it. Apple missed the boat on this huge chance to sell a device that tons of people would buy.

I have a problem

I used the guide.txt somebody posted here, used the frontrow that it recomends and did all steps except the copying of the framework.
In terminal I did
Code:
cd /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/
mv BezelFramework.bundle BezelFramework.bundle.old
mv ~/Do

Any chance Griffin will update the AirClick USB to support FrontRow? If not, how difficult would it be to make the RF remote FrontRow compatible?

other folders for movies

anybody know how to get the movies section to recognize video not stored itunes or the movies folder. i have movies on an external hd but not sure how to get frontrow to find them.

Missing the Boat

I think a lot of you are missing the boat with this app.

I would be shocked if Front Row didn't become the basis for a whole new appliance for Apple. It would be a Mac Mini specifically for the living room. I doubt they would even market it as a computer. People might still be skittish about buying a non-Windows computer.

But a home media player? No problemo. Add the ability to do some light surfing, maybe PVR (or not, depending on how the deals go with content providers), and a dock to transfer stuff to video iPod...

I honestly think sales of such a device would make the iPod look like chump change in the long run.

I think the app is fine even without the remote. It adds a sense of containment to all of the digital media files.
Also, I like the look of the full screen for audio...now I just need to find some better album art that doesn't look so pixilated on the screen.

think about it. do not tell me front row is good without the remote or i will cyberslap you (still working that one out). if you are already sitting at your computer, why do you WANT to have a slow clunky, feature cut system?? use the OS!!! not front row! front row was designed for use at a distance, when you don't want to have your hand on the mouse and the keyboard. yes it looks cool.. but do you really want to give it all up for that?

IF FrontRow comes to other Macs legally, I'd bet they'd jump on the opportunity. If they can get it to work with strange things like Mail and iChat, why not...but how they'd work DVD menus (as they don't now), I don't know.

From Griffin (RE: DVD menus):
I agree that such functionality would be useful, but to be honest with you I doubt that any such functionality will be included anytime soon. This is because there would have to be some way for the AirClick software to differentiate between whether a DVD is playing a movie or simply in a menu screen. Though I am sure this is wholly possible, we are primarily more concerned with it's more basic functionality with a variety of programs. I will pass your suggestion along, however, to the appropriate individuals.

Chill man. Its a new app that just got released and we are curious. If/when Apple releases this as a program with a BT remote, I'll be the first to buy it.

Again, chill dude.
