Yessssssssss. Of course, AT&T will lose, then add miscellaneous fees to Unlimited data customers.

They CANT loose. No one is entitled to UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH. AT&T could have canceled this plan at any time for any reason and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Its in the contract. PERIOD.

Im going to switch from my grandfathered "unlimited" plan and add my brother and dad to my plan and get the 30gb promo thats going on. The FTC should sue at&t for expiring rollover minutes too. Im down to 140 rollover minutes. I used to have like 3,000.

Just got my 5GB threshold throttling text today.

Ironic.

I've been on unlimited data since the 3Gs iphone and since I've had a Iphone 5 iPhone 5s and Iphone 6 with LTE I've never received a overage text. I just notice my phone is as slow as dial up. I hope they make it with no throttling. If they still throttle they need to raise it to 10gb.

Vote with your wallet.
I did.
I got tired of being shoved into the slow lane.
Did some usage and coverage analysis and with the rare exception, T-Mobile offered comparable service and I even saved money in the process.
Plus I gained tethering without having to find a workaround.
Win/Win for me and AT&T can go eff themselves for all I care.

I, for one, would probably switch carriers if they booted me off of the unlimited plan. My guess is that they feel many others would do the same.

OMG, everyone says they will switch. Everyone was going to jump to Verizon, DIDNT HAPPEN. AT&T knows how good their network is and from historical data, they know people will be back. The grass looks greener on the other side. Go for it... (Wait until you are throttled naturally because your outside T-Mobile or Sprints 5 square mile LTE network in each city and you are on the "E" ) LOL

So like others my first reaction is that of COURSE unlimited means unlimited and that they shouldn't throttle after a certain amount. I have Verizon unlimited and enjoy that's it's truly unlimited and I can use it as a hotspot too. AT&T's perspective is generally that they are giving you an unlimited amount of data but controlling how fast you can actually use it.

Let me ask a similar question.

If I go into a restaurant that heavily advertises unlimited breadsticks, can I reasonably expect UNLIMITED breadsticks? Or is it reasonable for the restaurant to say sure, it's unlimited, but we'll only bring out 1 per person at the table at a time?

I think we'd mostly agree that the latter is acceptable and that a request for 1000 breadsticks would be declined. Is that really any different than what the carriers face, where 95% of customers use 2GB or less and probably 5% are far more than the other 95% combined?

Certainly bandwidth is less of a tangible quantity than a breadstick -- it's harder to argue that I am being wasteful by using 100GB. But, let's not act like bandwidth is an unlimited resource, either. It does cost money to expand capacity and if the bulk of that is being forced by a few users sucking down enormous amounts of data then they are indeed a very real cost to the carriers and to all of us.

Dunno what the right answer is, but I do think it's far more complex than the FTC's argument that unlimited means unlimited.

If a restaurant advertises unlimited breadsticks and brings out a basket of sticks which contains 5 breadsticks. Everything is fine. Then you ask for more bread sticks and they deliver another basket of sticks which also contains 5 breadsticks. Everything is fine. Then you ask for another basket and they bring out another basket, this time it only contains half a bread stick and burnt. There's a problem. Get the picture? There's no basket that can hold 1000 bread sticks. No one is trying to order 1000 bread sticks at one time.

AT&T's 30 GB plan promotion includes unlimited minutes. I said goodbye to worrying about rollover minutes years ago.

So they give you rollover minutes, all the while telling you they expire in a year or if you switch plans, and you want to sue them because you don't like what YOU SIGNED UP FOR?

OMG, this country is doomed with so many with zero work ethic and the the overwhelming entitlement mentality.

I agree with you on " ... it's far more complex than the FTC's argument that unlimited means unlimited."

A better analogy is if the restaurant brought out a small piece of a entire bread stick at a time after you have requested 5 and received 5 whole bread sticks. You still can have unlimited bread sticks but have severely limited the speed at which you can consume an entire bread stick.

About Fing time!

I've not been throttled but 5GB is not equal to unlimited... It's bold faced lying. They don't throttle people who pay for 20GB when they reach 5GB...

If they spent the money to invest in their network, the deals would go away they'd raise prices and cut perks (unlimited data) to pay for it all. Careful what you wish for. You DO get what you pay for.

This is true!!!!! I mean if 50gb was there highest plan then if a unlimited user went over 50gb then they should throttle. It's just a way to make money and force you into shared.

Thank You Government!! It's about time someone slapped AT&T! Just the fact that they did this to unlimited plans is crazy, but on top of that they now charge you for 5, 10, or however many gigs every month, then if you don't use them you loose them! If I pay for 5 gigs, give me 5 gigs!, If I use 1 Gig, roll 4 Gigs over to the next month!!!!! These cell phone mobsters need some government regulation!

Here's how I see this playing out.

AT&T makes a change to ALL user contracts, killing unlimited data.

People who want to walk, are free to go without an ETF since there was a material change to the contract.

Problem solved. You agree for the remainder of your term to be throttled if you stay, and at renewal, you get to pick a new plan or walk.

Wow. If you're not joking then just wow. I'm sad to say this is a symptom of the entitlement society we now live in.

I'm not speaking for the OP, but if you can't determine when someone is joking or not, then you should get out a little more and expand your horizons.

Also, for those that have been paying for unlimited data for the last 6 or 7 years, that's an extra $5 a month, which comes out to $360 over the course of 6 years. That's a pretty substantial sum.

Yes! Government to the rescue! Government will solve all our problems!

I've had my ups and downs with AT&T over the years and many of the things they've done have absolutely infuriated me but I think the FTC is overstepping its bounds on this one.

Finally its about time , paying for unlimited data and throttled for "network" reasons then they give away double the amount of data while im getting throttled at 5gb or less

Same. Now I have truly unlimited everything. No longer have to monitor my minutes or data usage. Paying less and haven't noticed any difference in service.

Yeah, but

I have the grandfathered unlimited plan, and really hate being throttled.. but.. i was notified that it was going to happen, several times, through various different communication methods.. i don't see this going that far..

I'm glad to know you've got the forum sarcasm thing figured out. It's not always easily discerned and I've read even more ridiculous things from people that were completely serious. And I'm pretty sure that such a statement by the OP, if not genuine and clearly stated as sarcasm, would qualify as trollish behavior and is not supposed to be tolerated.

Screw you AT&T, you deserved this and it's about damn time something was done about it!

I can't wait to leave AT&T in a few weeks.

IMO what they should do is move to a tiered speed model, rather than tiered data. Much like the wired Internet companies. Most people do not need access to wireless data at 40Mbit/s.

Agreed. But I'd like them to twist it a little. I would like to see base level data included in the contract. Basically allow all the data you can use at .3~.5 Mb/s This is "free" data that comes with your contract. The tier you pay for gives you uncapped access up to a certain GB tier, at which point you fall back.

This makes certain you can always get an email, or look at a basic website without worrying about it, while still giving the carriers a way to generate revenue by selling service in multi-GB packages.

We should have political/economic/tech variations of Poe's Law.

haha... ya,, 'completely transparent' by not telling them.

Then again, isn't it perfectly logical to have "unlimited" data, where they would throttle you..

That's what all carriers do don't they??

It is 'unlimited' because your not charged. With mobile carriers there is no such thing as "download u you like"

if that were true, then u'd be hogging the network.
