Search for GPS Based Toll Collection India.. They are going to track each mile you travel and will collect toll for it. Apple is facilitating that. You will see the same exact features coming to Android just like the wallet app.
First they will ask link your credit card for quick payment for fuel. You will do that. Then they will use that to collect tax for the miles traveled on road, carbon emission tax, fossil fuel tax everything. As Tim always says, "It is in the pipeline".

Now thats cool, but it needs to be super intuitive if anyone is gonna use it...like when you pull into a gas station it automatically pops up on your screen asking what type of fuel you want and all you have to do is get out and put the hose in your car.
Do you get all various fuels from the same pipe in the USA or something? Don't you just lift off the one you want..? At least that's how it was during the many visits to USA I had... Initiative sure, but I'm not sure I want the fuel company having "always on" tracking just to let me know when to open their app.. Just opening their app and say putting in what pump # your on should suffice.. It would know which station your at..

This is how the Mobil app works. You just open it when you're at the station, it uses GPS to tell where you are and you put in the pump number. Location access is set to "while using the app". Pretty slick, and allows the user to initiate payment without interacting with the pump's buttons at all, except to select the fuel type. Also 3% cash back with Apple Card, which is a nice bonus.

Did I miss something? Most pumps around me don't even accept Apple Pay where I can take my phone with me as I get out of the car, double click & Face ID while walking to the pump.
I find it hard to find a pump that doesn't support NFC/Apple Pay these days. Most of the gas stations that support this new feature coming to CarPlay already support NFC so I don't see the point.

Now, that's some very cool technology...
But it won't go as far as making the experience of fueling fun. 💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰

This could be cool. We'll see I guess. As it stands using apple pay to pay for gas at the pump is pretty easy and I'm definitely voting with my (Apple) wallet by almost exclusively paying for gas that way. Neither of my vehicles has car play right now but I'm always looking at what's coming.

I used to use Mobil's app and found it to be a great user experience, especially in bad weather. Pull up to the pump, open the app. It used location services and knew what station I was at, and prompted for the pump number. Tap that, double-click for Apple Pay, wait for the authorization to go through, then step out of the car, grab the handle, pump, get back in the car, drive away, receipt is in the app. Having that on the car display instead of the phone would have added even more convenience.

*Apple Pay not in the NFC sense but in the application-uses-Apple-Pay sense.

Phillips 66 app is really great for paperless management and Apple Pay authorizations. They also take 10 cents off a gallon (or 25 cents off if you have direct pay setup)

Can’t wait to leave NJ to try this someday!
I’ve done this in NJ with the Wawa app! They were having a 15 cents off special. It wasn’t the fastest interaction and the guy walked me through it at the pump haha, but if I had to do it again it was pretty straightforward

Curious if it may actually be BETTER in NJ. You'd never even have to hand the attendant your card.

IMO, this sounds mostly pointless for everywhere else where you are still standing at the pump.

Will suck in NJ or Oregon where we don’t get to pump our own gas…

Is this a reference to fuel-station attendants?

There's another way to look at that… have always loved the depiction of fuel stations where you stop and someone refuels your vehicle as part of the service. Seems to make even more sense in this modern era of contactless payment technology.

I suppose at some point there will be refuelling droids to connect chargers for us.

Hmmh, a lot of gas stations have NFC nowadays, pull up, hold my watch, enter zip code, all within less than 15 sec… and with the Apple Card, Using Applepay I get 3% at Exxon/Mobil…

How much time is this really saving?
Assuming you use the slowest possible electronic payment method: the card swipe you save maybe 10 seconds? Using Apple Pay at the pump takes about 2s.
in my experience it takes longer for the pump to activate once I've completed payment authorization and selected a fuel grade. I don't know what the pumps do but sometimes that takes what seems like an eternity as the display resets, cycles through some self test then finally engages the pump motor to deliver fuel.

In either case you then stand (or sit if you go back in the car like I do) for about a minute for the tank to fill.

The time savings oppotunities in refueling an average passenger car just don't seem ripe for optimization. And it's not a particularly complex operation either (NJ, let people pump their own fuel). The ratio of time spent refueling to time spend driving is minuscule. 2 minutes to pull in, locate a pump, shut of engine, get out, authorize payment, open tank filler, select grade, fill tank, put nozzle away, clost tank filler. Then I drive for about 8-10 hours on that fuel. in minutes that's a 1:240 ratio fill:drive.
it's just another feature, another app, no need to touch the keypad and interact with the point of sale at the pump under extreme cold or heat.

Nice I guess, but as an EV owner it would be better with support for charging stations. Honestly quite surprising that Apple Maps/CarPlay isn’t better supporting with charging station maps etc.

Yes, most stations are single pipe/hose and you pick your fuel via a button
