Imagine pumping gas in 2022. Haven’t gone to a gas station since 2017. Yes I know I’m an outlier 🤪
If the infrastructure was there and EV’s weren’t as expensive as they are compared to their gas counterparts, I’m sure a whole lot more people would get one as their next car purchase.
i.e. I live in an apartment building, I don’t get to install a charger for my car, and having to take a bus to get to where your car is charging is not gonna convince people to pay the premium, assuming they can afford the monthly payments.

This is how the Mobil app works. You just open it when you're at the station, it uses GPS to tell where you are and you put in the pump number. Location access is set to "while using the app". Pretty slick, and allows the user to initiate payment without interacting with the pump's buttons at all, except to select the fuel type. Also 3% cash back with Apple Card, which is a nice bonus.
Yes, and it automatically connects with the rewards program as well. It's pretty slick.

Other chains have similar functionality - BP, Philipps 66, etc.

Since Apple doesn't make a real car, they want to control everyone else's cars with carplay. Just one step closer to that.

What you want to use cash ? Something I haven’t touched since 2000
No. I don't want to set up accounts with every gas station that I might want to use. Then register a credit card for each one as well. Then maintain those accounts as credit cards expire or change. It's easy enough to tap/swipe. Why complicate it?

So I’ll pre-authorize a pump and then pull up to wait for the pump to be open? Pass.

Just give me an NFC terminal instead. This is a solution in search of a problem.
They'll probably handle the gas transaction as an Internet transaction. Which is cheaper for the merchant than a POS transaction. This saves money. And Apple will be in between as a PSP maybe? That generates money for them. Just a few thoughts.

Eventually, a robe-attendant will fuel up your car -- just like in the old days!

The Texaco Man returns!

(Well, the Texaco Droid!)

I'm not quite getting the point of this? How beneficial would this be? I mean you have to get out of the car to pump your gas anyway. Except in 2 states. Otherwise using Apple pay from your phone/watch to the pump is already there since you need to put the nozzle into the cars fuel receptacle anyway. lol

No one is asking you to set up accounts for every gas station you use. Most people go to the same few gas stations on a regular basis. People aren’t setting up accounts in apps for random gas stations they stop at.

Did I miss something? Most pumps around me don't even accept Apple Pay where I can take my phone with me as I get out of the car, double click & Face ID while walking to the pump. Beep for quick authorization and just pump. I still use those plastic things called credit cards...partying like it is 1999.

I'm afraid this new feature might be another one of those "too many points of failure to make it worth the effort" features...sort of like setting up HomeKit sockets for my mother so she can ask Siri to turn on lamps (amazing when it works, frustrating when it doesn't). Every month I have to reset something because of Wifi issues, socket issues, etc.

Get different sockets or better router for mom?

I’m using ikea sockets for several years and rarely have issues.

Similarly, my 89yo mom and sister use Meross sockets both indoor and outdoor these last few years and have no real problems.

Ps You might rethink your physical credit card approach. My mom (and sis) has been using Apple Pay since iPhone 6 and a year later on Apple Watch 0. It certainly helps her travel lighter, with eliminating concerns of skimming, cloning, forgetting or other losses. Mom likes her apple wallet and is a bit nerved that our state doesn’t have any digital iD plan in the works.

Drivers will be able to preauthorize fuel purchases directly within Apple CarPlay starting this fall (via Reuters).

The feature, first mentioned in a developer session at WWDC earlier this month, will allow CarPlay users to use apps to navigate to a pump and preauthorize a fuel purchase. Fuel companies will offer individual apps that users will need to install on their iPhone to be available in Apple CarPlay. Entering payment credentials in the iPhone app ahead of time will allow users to activate a pump and quickly purchase fuel directly from the CarPlay UI.

Gasoline firm HF Sinclair told Reuters that it plans to adopt the new CarPlay functionality. "We are excited by the idea that consumers could navigate to a Sinclair station and purchase fuel from their vehicle navigation screen," Jack Barger, the company's senior vice president of marketing said. Likewise, P97 Networks CEO Donald Frieden told Reuters that he has taken calls from oil companies that want to make their apps available in CarPlay.

Apple has opened up more app categories for CarPlay over time, such as parking, electric vehicle charging, and food ordering. Driving task apps for logging business trip mileages will also become available alongside fuel apps later this year. Fuel purchase apps will be available in Apple CarPlay when iOS 16 officially launches in the fall.

Now thats cool, but it needs to be super intuitive if anyone is gonna use it...like when you pull into a gas station it automatically pops up on your screen asking what type of fuel you want and all you have to do is get out and put the hose in your car.

LMAO with continually rising Fuel prices, unless some significant cash back or discounts this will not matter too much. A LOT of people are getting smart selling their ICE cars and going electric sooner than planned.

Fuel isn't just petroleum based. This would be interesting if it opened up charging networks, without needing proprietary app / car!

Also - I'm in the don't knock it till you try it camp.
I remember ordering a pizza through the Papa John's app on my Apple TV. Once.

For the DD guy - keep hope alive!

As it is, I already pay at the pump with my Apple Watch. Doesn't get any more convenient than that.

Okay… most people here don’t even seem to understand what this is about. It just allows the gas companies to create a CarPlay version of their app alongside their current ones.

I guess I was looking at the bigger picture. "Fuel Purchases Directly Within Apple CarPlay to Be Available This Fall" is misleading. The announcement is just that the gas apps will run on CarPlay. Only benefit will be to those who already use the apps. No real progress with evolving how things work. A bunch of walled gardens.

This is a game changer IMHO and will soon be a high demand feature. I can see the car manufactures incorporating a whole new tier package for their electronics just to be able to charge a fee for it. This will give people piece of mind they aren’t dealing with a skimmer type of device that gets planted in these pumps all around…

I can see like the article said, this type of thing being incorporated into other ways, like drive up lanes at fast food… just order from a menu that pops up in your car as opposed to trying to recite an order over a intercom with the rain poring down, etc… its a brilliant way to enhance technology and give the consumer something useful… of course, it could all be ruined by greed… by that feature just being a way to nickle and dime people to death…

Time will tell.
