For the record, if this many people have a problem with the name iPad, then it is a problem. The name is weak, even without the feminine-hygiene connotations. I agree with an earlier post. Apple Tablet is simple, strong, to-the-point, and perfect for the minimalists at Apple. And it doesn't sound like a gimmick.

if you owned a dictionary or knew how to use the internet you would know that a tampon is both.

Welcome to being incorrect, I'm sure it's not the first time you've had that feeling. My other half just laughed at your couple of posts on the subject and doubts you've even seen where one goes.

But I have the internet and it says;

tam·pon (tmpn)
n.
A plug of absorbent material inserted into a body cavity or wound to check a flow of blood or to absorb secretions, especially one designed for insertion into the vagina during menstruation.
tr.v. tam·poned, tam·pon·ing, tam·pons
To plug or stop with a tampon.

There was on common phase in all the one's I saw "Plug". Go take a trip down the feminine hygiene isle at any store if you don't believe me.

Well, i'd say it's not worth about trying to get back, because everyone now and ever will assosiate the ipad with Apple. Not worth to fight that... better change the name of your devices and send Apple a resonable bill.

Apple should just reuse Newton and be done with it...

I'm partial to 'Darwin' personally.

And any of the more standard/minimalist slate, tablet, etc.

I definitely agree with another poster that iPad is a bit of a misnomer as you don't actually write anything on it.

Is it just me or do they use the Fujitsu iPads as POS in Apple Stores?

I use them at the retail business I work at. I know this is going to sound fanboy-ish, but I really, really, really hate those damn things. Coworkers avoid them like the plague as they're such a pain.

Just pay Fujitsu off and forget about it.

Do the Fujitsu iPADs allow books to be read or videos to be watched on them?

"It's our understanding that the name is ours," Masahiro Yamane, director of Fujitsu's public relations division, said Thursday. He said Fujitsu was aware of Apple's plans to sell the iPad tablet and that the company was consulting lawyers over next steps."

Is it also their understanding that they abandoned the trademark only to resurrect it in June in anticipation of Apple possibly using it ?

Does it matter? As long as they re-applied for trademark before Apple (which apparently they did) they have the upper hand.

Well it wouldn't be the first time Apple changed a products name. Apple tv was originally shown as the iTV. It will probably become the Apple tablet or Apple pad or even iSlate.

Apple TV was first announced as the work in progress "iTV" at a special press event in San Francisco, California on September 12, 2006. Apple CEO Steve Jobs demoed a modified Front Row interface using the Apple Remote. Industry experts described the appliance as a "short Mac Mini" that was too small to be a Mac. Jobs also announced enhanced fifth generation iPods, the addition of films to the iTunes Store and the release of version 7 of iTunes.[9][10]

Jobs again previewed Apple TV during his January 9 keynote speech at the 2007 Macworld Expo, where he announced that Apple would begin taking pre-orders for the device. Apple TV started shipping on March 21, 2007.[11]

I agree with the majority - I hope Fujitsu wins this fight and Apple chooses to go with a different name. iPad is just horrible. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't have another product named the iPod. I'm astounded that iPad was the best they could do (though I shouldn't be, as iPhone is an astonishingly lame product name too). Another vote here for Newton.

Save us Fujitsu. You're our only hope.

Maybe Apple could intentionally lose this one to get rid of the name...

I couldn't agree more. This is Apple's 'Out' from a poorly conceived (albeit well-meaning) name. Mount a lousy sham of a legal battle and get a shot at redemption. Maybe call it the iTab. That's a happy medium and a respectable concession. The stock is taking a hit, in part because of all the humorous backlash concerning maxipads and such. Talk about a public relations disaster, this is one if I've ever seen one.

As poor as the name is, I seriously doubt that is causing the stock to fall. I doubt anyone of reasonable intelligence and maturity equates this device to a feminine hygiene product. Seriously. Do people snicker when you ask them for a legal pad? Notepad? Pad Thai? Time to grow up, people.

Apple should have picked a better name, but let's move on from the juvenile tampon references. It's just embarrassing (not for Apple, for the tampon-obsessed commenters).

Then again, Wii was a ridiculous name too, and look what happened there.

I'm with fujitsu on this one.. Looks like Steve has some karma coming to him.. anyone remember the iPodRip??

"Apple, known for vigorously protecting its trademark and brand names, had a problem with the app because it had the iPod brand name in its name. When the Little App Factory CEO John Devor emailed Steve Jobs regarding the issue, the CEO fired back a two-sentence reply:

Change your apps name. Not that big of a deal.

Steve

I do remember that. I guess this is a case of 'what goes around, comes around'. :p

They should have called it the iTab.

I'm not crazy over iPad name. Let Fujitsu have it. I've seen Apple fight over other apple logos that did not look like Apple's apple. Even though Apple has the money, why waste it!

Call it the 'KneePad'! :D Heck iSlate is sounding better and better...

My attempt at iPad humor:

HTML:
                                       iPad pad

Sticks to your wears - +

Can be shared among friends + -

Should not be flushed down the toilets + +

Should be changed every 4-6 hours - +

Comes with or without wings - +

Girlfriends your guys will want yours + -

Cheers :D

The IPAD name has been used long before Apple:

IPAD - ipad.ca (Canada):

IPAD - ipad.us (US):
http://web.archive.org/web/20030807054443/www.oneboxsolution.com/

IPAD - ipad.net.nz (New Zealand):
http://www.ipad.net.nz/

IPAD - ipad.com.br (Brazil):
http://web.archive.org/web/20010201145800/http://www.ipad.com.br/

If you look at different Internet extentions, you'll see for Apple to register "iPad.xx" (iPad.com.au, iPad.fr) would be quite a difficult feat!
