I was fully aware that the event was likely to cover only things that were relevant to education. So I’m surprised that there was no update to iBooks. It would have been the perfect venue for it. Other non education features could have been covered in a press release and on Apple’s website, but books play such a critical role to education that it’s a little bit shocking that it wasn’t talked about.

Tip:

If you own a Roku and an Android phone, and want to stream this video, just install "Web Video Caster":

... and then tap the direct video stream link for the event: https://p-events-delivery.akamaized.net/18oihuabsdfvoiuhbsdfv03/m3u8/atv_vod_mvp.m3u8

... and tell Android to open the link with "Web Video Caster" just this one time, and when prompted, tell the app to connect to your Roku.

Gee Apple, back off a bit with the cringey scripted kids intro; talk about subtle brainwashing, it's SO transparent what you've done here, and highly contrived. Yuck. Leave the children alone to be children, and not cutesy marketing droids for your empire.

Yeah, I was disappointed too. My wife is a teacher and I am very involved with the school district so I too was interested in this event. It just sucked.

I used to think it's me getting old, and not understanding the technology of today. That tablet computing really is the future of computing and real computers will become for really special needs. I believed that the young people will not have a problem with a cloud based life, without save buttons an only approved software. I thought I was to be happy as long as i still could buy a "personal computer" to do things the "old people way".

I'm getting less and less sure... Who thinks the kids will spend lots of time doing all those creative things on their iPads? I think they rather will play some stupid game or post gossip on whatever social media platform they use (I know, Facebook is for parents to show pictures to grandparents).

I WANT A COMPUTER!!!

Why are Apple ignoring the massive amount of money that could be theirs if they just put a tiny bit of effort into the mac lineup? I work in IT, and only 5-10 years ago people where threatening to switch jobs if they didn't get a macbook (true!). Now... I don't think anyone care at all. The world was Apples to grab, but they ignored it. For what? Making a slightly faster and thinner iPad?

gaaa...

I love the touch of leaving in "Thinked" as a child's past participle of think. Such a lovely easter egg.

Thought Different.

I'll save you the time of watching the video........Apple losing school business to Google........Apple rebrands 5 year old iPad as "new" iPad for schools......Apple makes software for said "new" iPad......Apple rests on its laurels for yet another product release.....The End.

Totally agree with your last statement. He’s not a bad CEO per se, he sells, but he’s not an innovator. I think he misunderstood his role at Apple. I believe that Jobs wanted cook for five or six years just to calm things down and to make sure that the boat would’ve not be rocked too much after his death.

I think people are far too critical of Apple and Tim. Do we all miss the old Apple? Yes. But that's because they were ploughing new paths that nobody expected. It was exciting times. List 3 new features/capabilities/products that Apple could deliver today that would give you the same excitement as that? Yes, Tim has a much tougher job to keep its geek customers happy. Today's products by Apple are still engineered with the same degree to detail as ever, but they are also so much more complex internally and software-wise. It's truly a feat that things work as well as they do, and we should not ignore that.

It’s kind of funny Apple are renewing their push into education considering their last attempt at pushing iPads into classrooms fell flat and was considered a failure by that school board Apple boasted had ordered so many of the things.

Will pencil make a difference?

Computers and education are still a bit of an odd fit in general. Pencil won't hurt, and I've seen some really cool AR stuff which could definitely be useful. They'll keep plugging away at it, and it's good for educators that they keep trying and listening to feedback from teachers. Not a lot of computer companies do that.

I do think they missed a trick with the smart connector, though. The new 9.7" model doesn't have it, but the 10.5" Pro does.

I won’t even watch the video I guess I would die of boredom. Nothing really new and exciting. I guess a press release would’ve been more appropriate for this. Basically an iPad 2017 with an outdated chip and pencil support.

Homework ad is awful: not an indictment of Apple so much as 60 years of educators insisting kids can't understand abstractions without moronic hands on demonstration portfolios.

Was this a really good use of your CEO's time? Seems like a pretty routine announcement to have Tim Cook involved... Wouldn't his time be better invested in another activity?

Couldn't agree more. About 10 years ago, every Windows user I know was sniffing around at the Mac and I was getting hit with questions. The biggest one was "Where's the desktop machine?" Windows users didn't like the Mini because it just didn't have enough things to fiddle with and you couldn't open the box. The iMac was generally a nonstarter for the same reason, and the Mac Pros were out of the question because of the sticker shock.

Around 2006-2008, Apple could have killed it in the computer market if they had just offered a mid-range, headless, reasonably priced Mac. Windows users would have flocked to it. And for those who think that's anecdotal, consider the burst of activity trying to get Mac OS X to run on generic PC hardware back then. The demand was real and huge.

And Apple just let it sit there and wither. I will never understand why they did that. They had to have known what was going on. Either that, or their marketing people were utter morons.

Apple should have shown videos of children throwing the iPad at each other to see how durable it is.

Apple should have also shown videos of children fighting each other using Apple Pencil.

I hope the children won't stick the Apple Pencil into each other's as*. I know kids were sent to the hospital because somebody stuck his/her finger in it.

Kept the blog on Techradar open. Think the most interesting bit was -

10.58: Video now of kids saying cute things about teachers. The room has melted. I feel that's just shooting fish in the barrel here...

Tim is back! By the way, I'm enjoying his colour combo. Nice dark sweater on top of a light shirt, clean light slacks and some fresh dual colours sneakers. Just letting you know.

Roll on June :)

It sounds all great in their presentations, creative kids doodling on their iPads and learning amazing skills...

But the reality is different: you give kids an iPad and the next thing they'll do is installing games and browse social media. That's not learning, that's distraction.

I remember the day when I got my Texas Instruments TI-83 calculator for school, the first thing I did was to find some games for it, so did most of my friends. We were mostly gaming in math classes rather than solving equations or do graph analysis.

I have seen kids watching porn. They really enjoyed it.

Apple: More status symbol and less relevance as time goes on...
It is disappointing. They should just cede the education market to Google and move on.

UNLESS....they want to strangle like the toddler education market. These would be great for like years 13 and under in education. Indeed, that is who these commercials seem like they are made for anyway.
