If Apple really does ditch the standard audio jack its going to go down as the biggest mistake the company made since the round puck mouse. There is literally no upside to this. I don't need my phone to be one more mm thinner. I need it to have a better battery. Its small enough as is (actually the screens are too big, 4.5" would have been better than 4.7"). *sigh*
Just because you can't see the benefit right now doesn't mean there isn't one. Everyone bitched like babies when Apple replaced the 30 pin cable with Lightning, accusing them of all sorts of imaginary crimes against consumers, but thank god they did. Lightning is vastly superior in every way, and even the USB consortium is copying the double-sided design of it for their newest standard. Once again Apple was right and showed leadership in being forward thinking, and the yappers/Luddites were wrong. That will prove to be the case with the headphone jack as well, yapping notwithstanding.

Bad idea to remove the ubiquitous 3.5mm audio jack that works on laptops, desktops, automobiles, music players, mobile phones, even the in-seat audio connections on airlines.

Millions of people have spent good money on high quality headphones and earbuds that use the 3.5mm standard to be left out in the cold.

Apple doesn't care. Point was to remove to make the phone thinner, but it doesn't appear any thinner in the leaks.

Man this really pisses me off I don't to have to carry a adapter with me to charge and listen to my music ... I'm going to wait till its officially announced to make up my mind on what to do .. but its looking more and more like I'm going to get me the note 7 .. till the iPhone 8 is announced .

I'm bummed too, but think of it this way: this might be a chance for Apple to (FINALLY) get in on the wireless charging game. Also, with the image above of the volume buttons being placed further down, does this mean the mic is getting moved too? One of the great things about the Apple pods is that you can accept calls through your headphones, it would be silly if Apple took that out now.

Honestly, this reminds me in a way of the 3rd gen iPod Shuffle that put the controls for the device on the included earbuds, therefore not allowing you to use other earphones with the device. It was a horrible decision that failed and Apple went back to a similar design as their older models the next time around. We'll see if that happens with the iPhone.

Sorry if
1) I don't want another thing to charge
2) I don't want Buy a more expensive item (I agree that it will come down, but to a point. BT headphones will still need an antenna and batteries which won't go down in price that much and certainly not as much as earbuds as they are right now)
3) I don't want to need for an adaptor in case of lighting earbuds
4) I don't want to incur the risk that my headphones become obsolete because of an iOS update

Why are you apologizing to me? I'm not the one making changes. I'm fine with whatever Apple chooses to do. And I am ONLY speaking for myself and no one else. Address your concerns with Apple when and if this happens.

A huge, huge one for me is the car. I have an 08 Bmw that didn't have the iPod integration, so my only means is Aux+USB lightning to charge. That is a big one. Because in this case yes you do need extended periods of time where you are listening and charging.

Do yourself a favour and get a bluetooth streamer. I'm assuming you don't have the Logic7 setup and even if you did, sound quality isn't going to suffer that much if you get a decent Bluetooth streamer. A lot of friends who don't have iPod integration in their BMW's went this route just for the simplicity of it and in the case of the iPhone 7, will free up the lightning port.

I didn't think Apple was selling/license the female lightening connector? What will battery case manufactures like Mophie going to do if users want to listen to music.

pretty sure you can have lossless audio from any headphone jack...

Yeah, his statement is pretty ridiculous, especially considering the audio coming from Spotify and Apple Music is not lossless and the iPhone's support of the Apple Lossless format is minimal at best.

If they remove the jack in the 7, it won't be there in the 8.

Sorry guys. I don't want to be the party pooper but it isn't recommended to use the iPhone/listen to music WHILE charging anyway! The only device that is really made for working on it while charging is the Mac. So get over your not charging while listening to music arguments.
The headphones will sound better, anti noise cancelling will be possible IN the phone etc. The only thing that bugs me is that the volume controls aren't under the right earphone anymore - IF these headphones are legit!

So, is it even possible to charge while listening to music or watching video?
I currently use Jaybird X2 Bluetooth headphones or a Jambox speaker to listen to music and often charge my phone at the same time. Not hard to imagine what Apple is thinking. Wireless charging would give even more options.

Oh the outcry and audiodacity of Apple.

A few months from now nobody will care and find their solution for their set up/needs.

Everybody else will use what's in the box. (may even be the adapter)

As Guns n' Roses sing:

"Welcome to the Dongle"
