mines just "Room 1239"
i can see a bender and a Petoria (Family guy reference i think)
worst one ever was called "Room 128" at my apartment on campus. punks in that room had a party all freakin night and the network was unsecure, so me and my roommate hopped on the network and found a shared printer:
turn down the music
turn down the music
turn down the music
turn down the music
pages and pages of that were sent to the printer. within a minute the network disappeared
For myself I see no point in even broadcasting unless you want visitors 🙂
To someone who wants some free WiFi, not broadcasting your SSID is as good as broadcasting it.
While our home wireless is one of only five broadcasted in our village, it's secured with 802.1x authentication. The problem with consumer level security solutions on Wifi is that they're totally, wholly inadequate. Even MAC address filtering can be circumvented.
Picture this...
A nice Sunday, late afternoon, in an urban park full of kids, dogs, and picnics. I pullout my iPhone to see what is going on out on the internets and the wi-fi pop-up announces that "pen*s" is available (if I know the password).
...
True story. I immediately showed my wife and she was (not surprisingly) un-ammused.

After discovering the neighbours leeching my connection, I secured it and changed the SSID to "Piss off cheap c**ts!"
Obviously a the uncensored version.

agreed but it keeps out the casual browser. Proper security is the best way (little things like WPA2, and no DHCP server helps a lot). No system is 100% secure if it has access to a network.
🙂 anyway I go off topic here

What brand is your router?
hmmm, I think it is a Speedtouch 5851v6--at least, that's what it says on the bottom of the likeliest box, right where the model name and brand should be. See, there's a weird set-up where we have two boxes, one to do with the actual router part, and the other having to do with the fact that we were trying to get ADSL broadband over and ISDN phone line, which apparently required an extra box compared to connecting over PSTN phone lines. Or at least that's what the guy said who came to help connect things.
To be honest though, I feel pretty stupid about the whole technical aspect of getting online, and it's even worse with the network in this house, as I didn't set things up myself, my mother did (it's her house). Of course, that only makes a difference because I'm clueless; if I'd been more knowledgeable, I'd be able to figure things out, but as it is, I'd need extra help 🙂
