The only good ones around here are "kitty kay lounge" and "The Big Rancher". You'd expect a college dorm to have some more interesting ones. But i suppose i'm not any better, mines just "Room 1239"

mine is

Fifteen Lands From The Peanut.

Shame I am about the only one in my area with WIFI and all others have boring BTHomeHUBs 🙁

Well, there's only one and that's mine. 🙁

I have a few around me

1. Linksys
2. Default
3. Dlink
4. Netgear

etc the usual standard names the the routers have. Some of those are unsecured.

i can see a bender and a Petoria (Family guy reference i think)

worst one ever was called "Room 128" at my apartment on campus. punks in that room had a party all freakin night and the network was unsecure, so me and my roommate hopped on the network and found a shared printer:

turn down the music
turn down the music
turn down the music
turn down the music

pages and pages of that were sent to the printer. within a minute the network disappeared

Haha that is classic! That is something i would do. At my school i found a folder to install printers from all over the school, so i installed the IT office and send them some random smiley faces. Lol i got amused

I have seen a few on my travels;

  • Tampon
  • Monkeylover
  • F@CK
  • pwnd (yes I had to mess with that one and leave a few note on WiFi security to the owner, lol)
For myself I see no point in even broadcasting unless you want visitors 🙂

To someone who wants some free WiFi, not broadcasting your SSID is as good as broadcasting it.

While our home wireless is one of only five broadcasted in our village, it's secured with 802.1x authentication. The problem with consumer level security solutions on Wifi is that they're totally, wholly inadequate. Even MAC address filtering can be circumvented.

agreed but it keeps out the casual browser. Proper security is the best way (little things like WPA2, and no DHCP server helps a lot). No system is 100% secure if it has access to a network.

🙂 anyway I go off topic here

Theres one on my road that was named "looknowires" one of my friends hacked it and changed it to "looknosecurity" 😛

Picture this...

A nice Sunday, late afternoon, in an urban park full of kids, dogs, and picnics. I pullout my iPhone to see what is going on out on the internets and the wi-fi pop-up announces that "pen*s" is available (if I know the password).
...
True story. I immediately showed my wife and she was (not surprisingly) un-ammused.

Why on earth not? That's funny, lame but funny 🙂

After discovering the neighbours leeching my connection, I secured it and changed the SSID to "Piss off cheap c**ts!"

Obviously a the uncensored version.

those two stories are priceless. I once had some guys from upstairs poking around my network a while ago, and I wanted to do something to send them a message along the lines of 'get off my network' I normally don't mind people occasionnaly using it, which is why I'm leaving it open until now, but these guys are rude f*ckers who stuff themselves in the dorr you're holding open to get threough yourself, and stomp around a carpetless floor dragging furniture at 3am lol, so I really wanted blood wen I saw them there.

Meanwhile, I'd love to change mine from 'Speedtouch C3C451' into something a bit more interesting 🙂 Can anyone explain how I do that? I get the feeling I'm showing my immense ignorance here 😛 but oh well.

The best I've got here is 'Joe in Repose' Not especially funny, just more interesting.

Could you guys please recommend some further steps to take to bring security level above that of an average consumer ?.

I think most know the basics , run a firewall , no broadcast of SSID , MAC filter & WPA2 which is what most consumer routers come with, but what , if anything could be done to improve WIFI security ? and does it need more than that level ?

thanks

oh , funny names ...one was called thematrix ,another was staythe****offmyinternet but most are just standard router manufacturer name s

@ Rosin and Mac
What brand is your router?

hmmm, I think it is a Speedtouch 5851v6--at least, that's what it says on the bottom of the likeliest box, right where the model name and brand should be. See, there's a weird set-up where we have two boxes, one to do with the actual router part, and the other having to do with the fact that we were trying to get ADSL broadband over and ISDN phone line, which apparently required an extra box compared to connecting over PSTN phone lines. Or at least that's what the guy said who came to help connect things.

To be honest though, I feel pretty stupid about the whole technical aspect of getting online, and it's even worse with the network in this house, as I didn't set things up myself, my mother did (it's her house). Of course, that only makes a difference because I'm clueless; if I'd been more knowledgeable, I'd be able to figure things out, but as it is, I'd need extra help 🙂

My girlfriend has just moved into a new flat which is currently lacking internet access, out of pure curiosity I thought I'd use my iPhone to check just how seriously her new neighbours take their network security only to be asked if I wanted to join "wedding25", I know it's nowhere near as funny as some of the other SSIDs posted but I did find it a bit odd 🙄

Check out the manual on the CD that came with it for how to access the Speedtouch router interface. From there everything is generally very well laid out and intuitive.

I miss my Speedtouch 585 🙁

i had one in my neighborhood with "****TheCowboys"

and one was "2fast4you" i know who had it (a 60 year old dude who drove a corvette 😛 )
