G5 or 970 or something else

Just wondering what are the chances of it being named something completely different. It could be said that we are all pretty tired of the G3, G4 naming.. seeing how the G4 has been the top of the line, for SOOO LONG.

And 970, nothing really catchy about it.

Wonder if Apple could surprise us all with something completely different. ??

You couldn't possibly expect Apple to think different?! I jest, but that would be interesting if they did come out with an entirely new naming scheme.

I don't think Microsoft has any pull on Intel. The P5 will come soon enough.

Whats the big deal with naming it G5? The computer is called a PowerMac. That beats "Dell 8100" or "Gateway 700XL" with a Pentium 4 3.06 Ghz.

Apple Owner:
What system do you have? " A Power Mac G5 2.0 Ghz".

PC Owner:
What system do you have? "A Gateway 700XL P4 3.06 GHZ".
Whats the difference between that and a 700X?

Apple makes it easy to remember and straight to the point. The G5 sounds find to me.

lol intel will call their chip whatever the heck they want. Them calling Prescott the P5 isn't copying apple in any real way.

My god, what have I become?

It is breaking news.
Apple is making history.
And we are part of it.

So we can say hello to G5

Macrumors can now acknowledge tha tit''s going to be G5, what about that page 2 report that claimed a description of the machine, after a box was opened in Germany, calling it the Power Macintosh 970?
So what about the rest of the things mentioned there, not quite right either then?...

We'll see on monday!

I'm guessing Bill will just cut to the chase and have Intel call it the P6

I'm not a fan of G5 and P5 sounding so similar. Someone not familar with a mac could easily get confused. I think the new machines should be called the PowerMac Tron. That way, when Apple rreleases there LightCycle for personal tranport it will all fit together.

I'm having a hard time visualizing the whole chees-grater honeycomb thing, but I trust Ives.

You know, you plug the ipod in like a memory-stick in a Vaio desktop. Don't know what advantage it would have apart from reducing desk clutter? [/silly thought]

I don't think that's silly. That would be a great feature on the new PowerBooks. I like the idea of "plugging" the iPod into other devices.

This is one reason, why I hope it is called 970, because I liked the description and hope it was true. Would be a lot better than this ugly photo thing.

I think the "G-Spot" should be an Informercial about the G5's, hosted by Jobs, and cohosted by James Brown and Tony Robbins.

You'd have no choice but to feel good about spending your cash.

Yeah.... and while we're at it, how about an integrated cork puller?

I can see it now: an Apple-branded line of kitchen accessories centered around the new PastaMac G5, "lifestyle hub" of your digital kitchen.

If someone threw out a handful of PC names with their numbered models (i.e., gateway 700 Dell 8100) I wouldn't' have the foggiest idea which was faster. Even a PC idiot can figure out a G5 is faster than a G4. Keep it simple.

No offense but you're hardly the first one to say it (unless you're just talking about this thread).

That said, as someone pointed out a couple of weeks back, sticking with the Gx naming scheme makes sense from a marketing standpoint because, 1: People are familiar with Gx naming scheme and 2: In some peoples eyes, G5 is one number higher than Intel's P4, so therefore it's better.

To add to what ryan said, Apple should name the "Gobi" chip that they are going to use in the iBook the "G5". And the new "970" the "G6"

Because it is going to look dumb with the iBooks G3 and the new computers with a G5.

Plus Apple could say Look We have a "G6" Windoze people only have a "P4"

I still don't believe it will be called the G5, perhaps just because I like 970 better.

The problem with 970 is that they're totally dependant on using the IBM naming for the machines, and by keeping G5 (a simple number, but still with room to grow), they are not held to who makes the chips, or what the chips are called.

Good point.

Because, apparently most men wouldn't be able to find the little button, to... you know... turn it on...;)

:p I am sooooooooo glad that the pic that was posted
the other day is NOT the new powermac--I haven't been
able to sleep right ever since seeing that thing--ugly it was!

TechTV won't be covering the event, and no QT stream, which makes me nervous. But if any of this is true, I think I'll be happy. I too think 970 is better, but G5 does makes sense marketing-wise. I wonder, though, if Safari 1.0 will be 10.3 only?

G5 Bashing

After hearing people complain about the G5 name, I decided I should toss in my 2 cents.

Why would Apple choose a different name for the processor? They've spent so much time marketing the G3 and G4. It would be stupid to call the machine anything other than G5. That would be like Intel saying, "We've had the Pentium 1, 2, 3, and 4. Now, instead of calling it the Pentium 5 and making it easy for people to distinguish a difference, we're going to call the chip the Intel CompuAmazing 94576 Processor!" Apple needs to stick with a simple, easy to market name. G5 is that name.

Personally, I think PowerMac 970 sounds like some crappy PC name. PowerMac G5 sounds prestigious to me.

No way. Apple wouldn't leave Jaguar users with an unfinished beta app. They wouldn't even have allowed downloadable beta's if the app was going to be Panther only.
