If it's not long range I don't really see a point in the wireless charging :/

I really have no interest in setting my iPhone on a mat or dock, where it has to be specific. That has no appeal to me. I would rather use myLightning cable, as it takes very little effort and I don't see the mat/dock being as portable/compact as the cable is currently.

Long range wireless charging I think is no where near ready for the market. And my question would be, what's considered long range? 5ft? 15ft? 50ft? I think it's hard to say where long range is leading at this junction.

The iPhone 7 was basically a souped-up iPhone 6S+. If we assume that this is Apple moving to a 3-year refresh cycle, then the next iPhone would herald the start of the next 3-year redesign, whatever it's called.

I don't assume they have switched to a 3 year cycle. I think they adopted one this past round in order to do a redesign that wasn't going to be ready for the iPhone 7 and by delaying it a year just so happened to make it the phone released on the 10th anniversary of the iPhone.

It's still early but many people feel we're gonna get both at the same time.

Or rather, they think we're getting 2 completely different models and for simplicity's sake we're calling them the 7S and the 8 just so we can have conversations. That may not be what either one is called.

No way will they do that. Apple relies on their products to have a certain amount of status symbol, like it or not. Do you think people will buy *the latest Iphone* then when people ask what they have 'well it's the 7S, I know there is an 8 out but this is just the same without..' etc.. That's one thing Apple do not do.

As long as it's supporting the Qi standard...I would really hate a proprietary wireless charging standard by Apple.

I was fine with Apple's proprietary stuff back when it was actually better than the open standard.
At this point: USB-C! Qi!
Lightning or proprietary Apple Watch like wireless charging don't bring anything to the table.

Hmm Not ready till 2018?
I guess we're getting those new iPhones from made in India
Whaha...Wireless escape if long-range charging is too ambitious:

Just wanted to double-check before I passed your comment on to Tim. Based on what you wrote, even if Apple develops a more capable charging system, for example, a truly wireless one, you want them Tim to make sure it is never released, and that Apple instead simply adopts what everyone else is using? Assuming Tim agrees to issue a cease and desist order to the product development team working on new charging systems, how long do you want Apple to keep the ban on improvements in place?
Problems with genuine innovation/new materials are merely form factor, processing issues, scaling up to mass production, stability and reliability. This is where sapphire screens failed miserably. The bigger Apple has become, the bigger the pile with unused patents grows. So Apple can't completely block other's innovation, but they can impede it considerably. Most patents are defensive now.
Long range wireless charging could also go along that way, if issues for immediate application arise.

Apple strategy.
Year 1: Don't include inductive charging because it's the same as everybody else's doing.
Year 2: Rumour that they have market disrupting new wireless charging technology in development
Year 3: Cut off new technology last minute because it's not quite ready and go for inductive charging anyway.

An additional charging pad is rather a disadvantage, even if it's Qi certified ... one more mostly useless thing on our desks. I don't see Apple doing this.
I did rarely use Qi charging owning Google / Samsung phones. At first Qi charging appeared interesting, but there was no advantage in daily use for me.

We're getting some heavyyyy rumors and we're over 6 months away from launch.

Gonna be a hell of a year.

I agree, but because of these rumors, the final iphone 8/x could be a dissappointment.
I have seen some very nice concepts, with the bottom of the screen acting as a touchbar and icons for notifications.
My main concerns are:
1. The top and bottom chins will be larger, than the concepts i have seen, it can' t be an all screen front, you have to put the speaker, frontcamera, sensors somewhere on top.

2. Touchid, all these rumors are steering to apple not being ready to implement touchid in the display. Apple already showed us with the iphone 7 that they can produce a homebutton without moving parts by taptic engine, forcetouch etc. So that will be great, but i really hope touchid and (virtual ) homebutton will not be separated. I hope we won' t get a fingerprint reader on the back, next to the apple logo, or in the apple logo.
I have seen some leaked pictures of the samsung s8 and they moved the fingerprint reader to the back of the phone.
But i actually think they are going to do that, for confience with apple pay. And the face recog tech will be used for an easier way to unlock the device, or you can even use both for 2-step verification.
And i may be stretching it a bit too much, but:
knowing apple, i bet touchid will be in the apple logo, and apple will release a case with an apple logo cut out on the back(other case makers can' t do that officially because of apple' s. copyrights on the logo). They would sell a motherload of these cases.

I don't see Apple sticking to any existing standard, including Qi.

Does anyone remember this?

Yes, and I thought it had come up again more recently, but seems to have gone away again.

Particular use case scenarios aside (e.g. in a car), I'm not really too bothered about wireless charging as an alternative to a dock. Putting my phone on a mat instead of a dock is neither her nor there really in terms of convenience.

But over the air wireless charging would be really useful, essentially keeping devices topped up with charge all the time whilst in the house.

Sigh a premium 5 inch model, a better plus model and a meh 4,7inch model.
We dont have a say anymore what size screen we would prefer, unless you sacrifice on functions.
[doublepost=1487418604][/doublepost]If its better then the stopid mats we have now, i dont care if its their own design and not Qi standard.

Alright, Im gonna ask a potentially stupid question here.

Why is everybody talking about the iPhone 8. Isn't it iPhone 7s that is up next?

Maybe the premium model will be called 8 and the standard models will be bumped to 7s with little change in design...again.

Apple have been following this pattern for all their products lately, like the premium iPad Pro selling alongside the regular Air and the new MacBook Pros selling alongside 2015 models.

They do this to inflate the cost of the new models, pure and simple. Instead of advancing the tech more quickly and discontinuing the old models offering the new tech at the same price they keep the old versions around and put a premium on the new ones.

Marketing and money-making at work. Tim Cook wouldn't have it any other way!

Don't know about others but I would love a wireless mat big enough for my phone and watch; would just have to lay it down for it to charge. Simple

There are third-party options for that (for the iPhone, anyway) and Samsung has had it for years. I think it was Cook that said having a charging pad was nothing more than a gimmick, and I completely agree. Having to walk over and set your device down on a pad is basically the same thing as walking over and plugging it in. You're here, the phone is there. Long range wireless charging is where the future is.

My guess is that Apple has adopted the Qi wireless charging standard. Since many public places now have Qi charging pads, Apple adopting Qi inductive pad charging on the iPhone 8 makes a lot of sense.

Wireless pad will only be useful if it's like this one

A flat one is pointless imo

There really shouldn't be an additional more expensive "premium " version.
both 2 models should have OLED screens, edge to edge screen and glass body ets.
and the price should remain same.

It would be really ****** if they went proprietary. I've been looking at buying a Toyota Tacoma that has a Qi charging panel built right into the vehicle.

like when the original iPhone came with a dock, these new ones should come with this.

though how many years ago did samsung do wireless charging? always behind on something now and days. i hope they do this next iPhone right.

I still do not understand the appeal of the wireless charging for a phone, especially a proprietary one. Having to use a bulkier and more expensive charging piece for the sake of what? Simply getting rid of any connectors? Upping up a price of an already expensive phone? Puzzled...

And what do we do when we travel, carry that charging mat along? USB chargers are included in modern cars & wall sockets, while having to plug that mat into a socket and then place a phone on it so it does not slide off at an airport, caffe, etc. will be just a mega nuisance, imho.

And this thing is way bigger than a phone itself.

Our new cars both support the Qi wireless charging system. If Apple goes all "courage" on us, the iPhone 7 will be my last...in the same vein as my most recent PC switchover from my aged Mac Pro.
