That's a rather verbose way of saying "I don't understand that Apple has always been in the lead adopting GPU technology into it's A series processors by licensing the newest plans from Imagination Technology and tweaking them to their liking".

Apple has ALWAYS been ahead in GPU performance in the mobile space.
You just want me to say Apple makes the best phone. If I would say that, I would lie to myself.

No, I want you to understand that there are some things that Apple is doing better than the rest of the industry. SoC design, including always being ahead of the rest when it comes to GPU power in their phones because they customize ON TOP of IT's (abbreviation) reference designs. That's just a fact, one that was backed up every year by ArsTechnica's massive in depth coverage until the guy that did them left, but the process continues.

Frankly, if you like an Android device (there's quite a few nice ones out there) or an iPhone I couldn't care less. I'm just trying to stress the facts when it comes to GPU/CPU advancements and how Apple is still ahead of the likes of Samsung and Qualcomm (whom still insist on easy gains from adding cores, which doesn't speed up most tasks on the phones).

I do understand Apple is ahead in SOC. GPU power I find more questionable because Imagination Power VR is adopted by a wide range of phone makers. In most other tech Apple trails other phone makers nowadays.

Yes, they (Android OEM's) usually stick the off the shelf version of it into their phones. Apple does not, they take that architecture/gpu design, and modify it further for better performance and cooling. That's why nobody touches apple when it comes to sustained performance in the GPU realm, while other phones are running hot (because they just stuck a ton of cores in there) and throttling, the A series runs circles around them before having to throttle back.

There just simply isn't a comparison right now between an off the shelf IT design, and Apple's modified version of those GPUs. That's all I've been trying to state.

Fingerprint and retinal scans will become useless once they apply this to hologram clones of people. Now only if they can transfer our brains to those clones, we could live on forever.

They do it because the competition is doing it, and consumers have org**** over specs. No other reasons.
I think they'll adopt it because they've an idea with AR/VR where it's useful (similar to Samsung offerings).

Exactly this. There is nothing stylish or cool about wearing a VR helmet in public. There's no reason to kill the battery life on the iPhone and increase materials cost with a tiny 4K display for those few thousand people who are nerdy enough to use it and care about VR pixel resolution. And even though these devices could potentially output 4K resolution, the quality of the lighting, textures, physics, etc isn't going to be that great on a mobile device for many more years for any sort of VR gaming. Just because you can draw 4K to a display doesn't mean it's good looking 4K. I feel like a lot of people are starting to realize this with things such as the PlayStation 4 Pro.

I don't really see head mounted phones being very popular. I don't think AR/VR will really take off mainstream until it's built into regular glasses, contact lenses, or perhaps streamed directly into the visual cortex. And the interface to control it has to be seamless—no awkward hand gestures, or blinking/twitching/whatever other crap I've seen. There is still a lot of work to be done, and likely involves components and software that won't even be invented for several more years, much less tested and produced into a complete working product.

I've been saying that for years, and yet it hasn't arrived. Microsoft has tried, but there are a lot of tradeoffs—namely poor battery life, poor processing speed when undocked, and clumsy interfaces. This may eventually be the case, but I did say that it has merits in driving out 4K content to external displays. Please re-read what I wrote.

I'm going to start writing ridiculous things at the bottom of my posts to see if people read them because I've been having this problem lately. Hitler is a jelly bean.

So, I actually re-read what you wrote … not sure what your beef is about me pretty much agreeing with you and expanding on it a bit. I do, however take issue with calling an evil 19th century dictator a jelly bean.

Yes, but that day isn't here yet - so the point stands. Apple shouldn't waste its profits on a feature that only a very small minority (VR fans who want to use a phone as their display).

"UNLESS of course at some point … "

The way you worded it came across to me like you were trying to refute what I said by saying what I said, like you hadn't finished what I wrote. Sorry if I came across as rude as I had several people at that time who hadn't read what I wrote. Also Hitler was a 20th century dictator, although he was born towards the end of the 19th century, lol.

True, but I'm personally convinced he was a li'l tyrant from the very beginning. ;)

If you haven't had a kid yet, they all are.

*blank stare into the distance*

…they all are.
Yes, but when they have kids you get your shot at revenge as a grandparent; and you have a whole lot of experience on what to do...

Sounds like the displays on these phones will be orders of magnitude sharper than the people who buy them thinking it matters OR makes them "better". :p

I still say 4K or on a small device is good, but having it on big screen is better... Perfect for those already with 4K set, but who would but a 4K TV just so they can admire 4K photos taken with an iPhone?

Does make them better on a tiny screen... Apple wouldn't charge extra just because they want more money... usually there is a valid reason behind it.

I see no need for 4K in a phone because human eyes cannot resolve it. As the article mentions, it would be best for VR that uses lenses to change the focal plane in such a way that it magnifies the pixels displayed to each eye. But otherwise it's useless and only serves to needlessly consume battery life. I think true @3X is a good place to stop for phones, as from typical viewing distance someone with perfect vision can no longer resolve individual pixels.
I largely agree, I just would reformulate the criterium a bit: When someone with perfect vision cannot see a difference between a given resolution and a higher resolution.

Apple doesn' t make the best smartphones(although their socs are superior) but it makes the best product(combination sw and hw).

If you were using AirPlay to send your iPhone (or iPad) display to a 4K HDR TV then it would come in very handy.

that has nothing to do with the lack of 4k screen on the phone, my 6s records 4K video, I can't airplay it to my 4K tv because apple tv doesnt support 4k.

I would suggest twice that resolution, precisely to accomodate those of us who use stereo viewing, and to use the overshoot to include twice the number of color primaries so the rest can benefit by getting a wider color gamut with less metameric variation in regular 2D.

Do you understand anything about chip performance in the mobile space?
Chip performance will not be noticeable to most of the customers, what they hear is HEX core processor, oh this processor is better than a single core processor on iPhone, lets buy a phone with HEX core processor.
Android phone has 6 GB RAM, iPhone has only 2 GB RAM, lets get Android.
On paper they look good.

Funny people here.

I wonder in what other aspects of life people complain about something being too good?

EG. I'm upset something I feel is good enough it going to be made better.
When can we have a Xenon processor & 32 GB RAM on a phone please, these specs look good.
Just because it is good doesn't mean that we need them.

And that's why the iPhone is the single best selling phone, right?
