Got my new 15" Macbook Pro & G.Skill 8 GB kit this past Friday. Today I installed and booted my MBP for the first time. When I was going through setup, I would get a screen that would say "You need to reboot your computer" (or something close to that) 3 or 4 times. Figuring it was the new RAM, I put the Apple stock RAM back in and everything works fine. Just curious if anyone else has had an issue. I'm guessing that I just got a bad kit, but wanted to see if anyone else had an issue. Will return it tomorrow, and order RAM from OWC and use their rebate for Apple RAM to offset the cost.

With the 8gb G.Skill installed, I would run the apple hardware test see if that catches anything. How to do this is documented in the white booklet that came with your new mbp. Just hold down 'd' during a reboot.

It's also possible (though not really likely) the RAM wasn't seated properly when you installed it. You can try to reseat it and try again, but it sounds like your probably got some bad RAM.

Thanks guys. I actually sent it back today, I'm just thinking I got a bad RAM kit. No biggie, I'm just gonna order a new one.

Anyone else installed this in their mpb that isn't the 2011 or 2010 model? I have a mid-09 mbp, so I think it should work just fine as well.

My RAM came Saturday...as I was on the way to the airport. I installed it last night when I got home. Working smoothly.

I just installed the 8GB 10666 into my 2011 15" MBP - everything is recognized and working perfectly.

On a side note, the RAM modules looked very nice and slick. There was even a hologram sticker on the RAM stick - looks much better than the stock chips.

I got mine a few days ago. It was working ok, until suddenly I started getting kernel panics (e.g. system freezing). I did the Apple hardware test and it gave me this error message about 2 seconds into the test:

4MEM/4/4000000; 0x847d6598.

I put the stock memory back in, ran the hardware test, and no errors given. I've yet to test my system properly after this, but will report back if the kernel panics return.

What do you guys think, bad memory kit? Send them back and get a pair of Crucial instead?

Argh - I just returned two sets of corsair memory that was doing this same thing. I'll have this g.skill set arrive Monday, and I really hope I don't have the same problem. I don't know how long I can last with 4gb running OSX and parallels.

Just pony up for the Crucial. All those 5-star reviews mean something.

You know, I ended up doing the whole 'replacement' RMA deal on Newegg, just a bit easier, instead of waiting for refund, etc. I would have gone for Crucial though, if that was just as easy of an option. Hopefully this new G.Skill kit works as anticipated :)

Psych

Great RAM. I think they have good customer service, if you look at the Newegg reviews they respond to all the reviews below 3 stars.

Got my new RAM, installed it, and what do you know - back to the start. Freezes and lock-ups, the computer not being able to wake up from sleep for one.
Put back the old Apple memory and no problems so far.

Have requested a refund, and put in an order for Crucial. No more G.SKILL for me.

For what it's worth, I've always purchased Crucial RAM and never had a problem.

Doesn't mean you won't, though. :)

Just got my 8GB from OWC this past Thursday, got to install it today, and it's working fine. Will even get a little $$ back from OWC using their RAM trade-in rebate offer.

Ordered this Tuesday and received today in the mail from Newegg for $63 shipped. Using GeekBench 64 bit, my results were:

4gb (stock)- 10,967
8gb upgrade- 11,138

Rig is 2.2ghz i7 15' / standard hdd (still looking for vertex 3)

Not much based on geekbench numbers, but using some photoshop, i can noticeably tell the difference in times. But hey, $63, cheap and worthy upgrade!

I noticed a similar 150-200 jump in GeekBench running 32bit. I don't notice much of a difference personally with my usage. My heaviest usage is running World of Warcraft on high settings...still a worthy upgrade for the price.
