Ahhh, come on, you don't buy a notebook for running benchmark only, do you ?.
There are so many other aspects to consider when using a notebook. No offense but I think people who only look at the spec are so unwise. :D It's like you marry a man/woman based only on amount of cash, degrees, height, etc ... without knowing how much he/she can complement yourself.

So if you don't judge a system by its specs then what do you judge it by? Size? That's a specification. OS? That's also a specification. Weight, color, material? Those are also specifications. It's not a living thing so you can't really judge it by it's political views, favorite shows, etc.

I'm not a fanboy of either PCs or Macs, I actually prefer PCs in terms of hardware, but that ASUS laptop is one of the ugliest pieces of **** I've ever seen in my life. I'd never be caught dead using that in a public place (not like I'd really be able to take it anywhere outside my house anyway)

Decisions, decisions.... The last laptop I had before jumping over to the dark side ( ;) ) was an Asus G1S. It was a great machine and comparable (at the time) to what you're looking at. I liked it so much that I bought one for my niece.

Then I got an MBP from Amazon, thinking I'll try it out and see what happens. After all, I can always try it out and return it if I don't like. I wasn't seriously thinking about switching to OS X, since I haven't used a Mac since I had an SE30 almost 20 years ago. Anyway...I haven't looked back. These machines are simply a pleasure to use. The Asus could get pretty loud and wasn't nearly as well engineered as an MBP. I really do wish I knew this then, as my niece would have ended up with a much nicer machine, but whatever.

Yep, the Asus sure looks nice with those specs and the price. If you want to play games, I think that's the way to go. If you want a solid and reliable machine that will way outlive the Asus, get an MBP.

Good luck with your choice! Enjoy your new machine, whatever decision you'll make!

I don't see Apple offering a 2 year warranty for parts and labor along with 1 year accidental damage coverage.

Yeah that speaks very clearly to their confidence.

I would never put Apple mobos above one from ASUS. Did you check the reviews for their X58 mobos? ASUS was the only manufacturer that stayed running in a 60C incubator while running at full load. This was on the P6T Deluxe V2 I believe.

The only thing ASUS falls short on is the battery and exterior design. Still not bad for a company that just recently put more effort into the pre-built game.

It's surprising how much effort ASUS has put into its mobile line up in the past year or two. Their motherboards have always been top notch.

The G73 falls into the predictable gamer notebook segment in terms of design. Though the intakes and dual fans stand out. In addition to power they're aiming to keep it cool and quiet. ASUS is rather confident to offer such a warranty to its customers for its users on notebooks.

I guess you don't get my point, my friend ;)

Am I alone here thinking that we are always comparing Apples to Oranges. Wait for the next revision MBP's to come out for a more realistic comparison. And besides...your comparing two machines running different OS's. If you are planning on running only Windows on the MBP....why pay for a mac?

imo...No Windows laptop comes close to any MBP.

Or you could be sub consciously worried at how kick ass this machine is compared to your MBP.

Apple should be embarrassed.. Good God.

Haha, I'm an IT journalist and I could have any laptop I wished for. Why should I worry :D ? Read my post carefully and you'll see that I said spec should not be the only thing to be considered when comparing 2 laptops.

Then I have to conclude it's a matter of preference.

i really dont understand how you can compare these two. The asus exterior quality is crap, but has better components and benchmarks than the mbp. They are both meant to do different things. The mbp is meant for things like web, itunes, movies, photos and that sort of thing, while staying portable. The asus is meant for GAMING, and thats why it is a brick, much like the XPS 1730 was. And by the way, i own a 17 mbp, and i get a solid 7 hours out of it everyday before i have to plug it in to the ac, i have two hardcore gamers that have the Asus, and they get a max of 3 hours

I wouldn't say the MBP can only do those type of things. It's capable as a professional based system such as music production, video and photography. As long as the software is optimized for the OS, you shouldn't have much trouble running those stuff.

However, I do agree that the ASUS is built for gaming, thats why it has such high specs in the first place.

It's like comparing a Ferrari with a Prius. The Ferrari is built for speed while the Prius is built for an everyday car. Here, our MBP is the everyday computer and the ASUS is the speed demon.

Actually does have to be said, I bought my Sony with the intent of playing with games, getting into 3D rendering, messing with XNA some, and stuff like that.

So far I've spent the majority of my time doing homework at my desk, and the time I do have to goof off at a computer, I use on the laptop reading forums and doing really boring crap.

Oops.

It DOES run Crysis really quite well though.

But as you know, this has exactly zero to do with reliability...and everything to do with the additional revenue opportunity. The Asus warranty came in actually super handy when I was doing some work in Ireland, and I managed to fry the laptop when unplugging it from the wall socket. I was using the adapter to be able to plug the laptop into their outlets, and it somehow caused a power surge. There was actually a black smoke coming out of the laptop. I thought for sure that the laptop is gone, but I called Asus and it was covered under their 1-year accidental damage warranty. They fixed it all up. Pretty impressive. :)

8? try 4! I've read the real reviews and they all say it gets 4 hours when actually doing stuff. the 8 hour figure is the fake figure apple gives you where they have it on doing nothing at all under optimal conditions.

I had the 17" (latest model) and it lasted a good 8 hours and 20 minutes, I downgraded to a 15" as I need more portability and I get 8 hours and 40 (increased in battery life probably due to the intel SSD which wasnt on the 17") minutes of battery life.

Actually Apple understates the real world battery life.

The ASUS looks nice especially on paper to play games but with OSX on the 17 inch's side, can do everything much better than windoze with i7 or not.

I guess the only thing that bothers people are on paper specs of buying the so called old hardware but when it really comes down to it, whether its an i7 or a core 2 duo, it'll get the same job done with not too much of a big difference in the all around real world computing needs except that OSX is far superior with a much better workflow and NO VIRUSES.

I dont care what anyone saids that there do exists trojans on OSX and I know this too but the typical apple user will pretty much almost never get any virus/trojans.

I judge by how well the software works.

IMHO it wont matter too much if your sporting the most bad ass hardware out there when you have poor software to go with it.

I think software matters a whole lot more than hardware. I know you have to have at least decent hardware (doesnt have to be the latest and greatest) but I'd take a 20%-30% slower hardware if it runs much superior software/os.

I'm going to cut you off and tell you that you have no idea what your talking about. Most of the time the macbook pros get MORE than their stated time. My roomates easily makes 7-8 hours. Multitouch and quality is also a huge step above anything that the asus can come close to. Yes the specs can be better, hence waiting for the refresh which should be coming out tuesday from the latest rumors.

All day on campus, I always see the mixed bag of notebooks being used by students and almost all of the pc users bring their mini usb mouse with them.

I always think to myself, man they get 2-3 hours of battery life while having to bust out that god awful usb mouse (even while the notebook is on their lap) to use it comfortably is such a hassle!

I LOVE the multitouch trackpad, I love it even more than an external mouse most of the time as well. It just works so damn well.

Often my brother (sager lover) always asks me, hey how come I have the same multitouch trackpad on my sager as you do but why doesnt it work as well as your multitouch trackpad or nearly as responsive??

I always tell him, its because of the software and better implementation of apple's multitouch!!

Its crazy how the pc users with their external mouse will accomplish 1 tasks or 2 at a time while I'm rummaging through 7-8 things at a time just transitioning my workflow so fast that pc users go 0_o while watching me juggle 6 spaces with 8+ apps at a time especially using all the gestures.

And TRUST ME, once a mac user makes use of the multitouch trackpad and its gestures it becomes second nature. Then the user can fly through all the tasks using the multitouch trackpad and its gesture + keyboard shortcuts and there is nothing faster than that! It is incredibly useful.

I'm still so impressed by the multitouch trackpad and its accuracy as well. I'd have to peg that its always 98% accurate in what I'm trying to do with the trackpad.

I'm not the type to argue... but I have to stop you there. Your associating PC's with external mouse? (Mice? Lol) That's so very wrong in so many ways... Sure, the touchpad is great but working for hours on some 3 x 2 inch trackpad will eventually become annoying as hell.

So if you don't mind. I'm not going to trust you. :D

I'm a Mac and I love the MM.

ONTOPIC : I own a G71 as well as a MBP, they're ugly things. Mac's are beautiful inventions, just be patient. Refresh for this Tuesday FTW. Don't try and compare an asus and a MBP unless your socially retarded.

Tell me again how social prowess has anything to do with comparisons of technology?

Tell me again how social prowess has anything to do with comparisons of technology?

Did I mention the comparison of technology? No. I was merely referring to the topic which is, unless I'm mistaken, 'G71 vs 17" MBP'. The fact is, if you're lugging around a large ugly black G73 - you're going to look like a clumsy, unorganised mess in comparison to a beautifully slim and pure white MBP. MBP's are special in the way that they combine 'social prowess' with efficient computing and I just felt like highlighting that. Problem? :D

Again, I did not mention anything about comparison of technology.
Wait till the refresh :)

So shush your socks.

i hear asus is the best quality in the industry. they do make motherboards and inner components themselves after all. also you get two year warranty and 1 year accidental warranty for free which is good.

They suffer from the same problem as Dell. Their $1500+ "business level" laptops are great, they support them, they're built well, etc. But anything less than $1000 - you'd be better of bludgeoning yourself with a brick. They frequently have problems, don't come with good support, and are built in a very flimsy and cheap manner.
