Ok, I bought one and never ever in a million years I though I would say this about Samsungs product but: I love it. Well done Samsung! That's me hardly jumping a ship or anything like that. Love iPhone and surely I will still buy the 8 or whatever is called.
The hardware, not the software surely? Mind you each has its annoyances.

I have used galaxy phones before, this is so much improved. Definitely not in par with the smoothness and joy of iOS but the veraety of things you can do that you can't on iOS is actually tempting. Just hope Apple would give a tad bit more options on iOS, without compromising security of course. Love the security on iOS devices.

They deserve the sales, I saw the S8 in person and it blows away the iPhone 7 in terms of hardware and design

makes my phone look antiquated

Too many problems out the gate with the S8: Terrible rear finger sensor placement, broken and insecure facial unlock. Slow and awkward Iris unlock. No voice assistant due to performance issues. Red-tint display defects. Lower shipped display resolution setting due to battery life and performance issues. Older less secure version of Android...

I'm sure Samsung has a large Ad budget, but these kind of things quickly cause a device to fall out of favor.

most of your issues are just with opening the phone, talk about making a mountain out of a molehill

A voice of reason. But unfortunately, many people will see it as good enough, and overlook these factors.

PLEASE tell me you’re joking. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that the Apple marketing department is truly military grade. Truly, I mean the best there is. If their products were as accomplished as the marketing there would be no downsides.

Spot on.

"Apple’s public relations (PR) department is probably the best in the world — certainly more impressive at shaping and controlling the discussion of its products than any other technology company."

Samsung innovated an edge-to-edge display. Apple pushed out 3D Touch. Curious: Who has the more innovative and utilitarian display design?

For me, Samsung's feat is a game changer. Could this be the iPhone killer? That OLED crushes, destroys, humiliates any fancy gimmickry 3D Touch offers: app switching, Peek and Pop, new gameplay mechanics, trackpad mode, Quick Actions. If anything, it's great that Apple's got some fierce design competition.

Why is this "unfortunate"? How does this affect you, what other people consider "good enough"?

See it in positive way! If more people buy Samsung mobiles, iPhone users will be more special, more elite!

Same here picked up the normal size S8. I'm loving the break from iOS and the iPhone. Samsung got a lot right with this one. However, if apple brings it with the next iPhone, i'll be back. Competition is good we as the consumer wins, no need to be biased towards any one platform nowadays when so many great choices exist:)

Had a chance to play with S8 version at store. The phone indeed looks interesting. While having larger diagonal compared to my iPhone 7 Plus, it feels smaller. The screen is gorgeous. Camera focuses instantaneously. The edge-to-edge screen needs some getting used to period, but it makes phone look great. Will consider to get myself a Plus version

Unlike the iPhones, there is no delay on delivery of the S8 or S8+ if you didn't order within the first 3 minutes. You can order from any carrier right now, and get it in 2 days.
Also helps out that people have been getting them with Gear VR headsets and Daydream-like controllers, and a select 50K preorders got a 256GB U3 microSD card and AKG Bluetooth headphones (AKG wired headphones are in the retail box).

Not sure if you used it or just brought into the hype of hating the phone. I have normal sized hands, and while it was weird to get used to, the fingerprint sensor isn't a problem. The iris scanner is far from slow and works for me even in low light, the red tint, I haven't had so I don't know much about or haven't seen any devices with the issue, and the resolution is able to be changed, I changed mine right out of the box, at least i'm given the choice. Use the phone longer than just the display unit at the store before you judge just saying.

I had the S7 Edge, and the 8 and 8+ look great. I just couldn't handle waiting for the carrier to send out an os update, which can be months after it's officially released. With Verizon, the update was usually 6 months behind.

I am not surprised. It is the first mobile phone I have heard non techie types at work talk about in AGES.

If it is better than an iPhone and cheaper than an iPhone then fair play to it. Personally I think it will be blown away by the next Apple offering but crucially the Apple phone will not be cheaper! Money and looks talk to the non tech crowd.

Seems to me the Note 7 debacle has to factor into this in both directions.

- Some people are less likely to buy Samsung anymore after the Note 7
- Some people are desperate for a new phone because they had to turn in their Note 7

I'm going to guess that more people were in category 2 than category 1 and that helped push sales up for Samsung (among other things).
