Composition and timing are the most important factors in a great photo. Everything else is secondary. Don’t sweat the specifications.

Why? Are iPhone customers the chosen ones?
Gee, Gillian, let’s put our heads together and noodle on this one. Hmmm...

Maybe it’s because iPhone X owners pay a premium and expect the best in return? Or because they are locked into an ecosystem that’s the most expensive on the market and are generally OK with paying a bit more for stuff that’s a notch above?

Or perhaps it’s because they were anointed by God. Hard to say.

Question. Do You think the average consumer really cares about minimal differences between the smart phone camera manufacturers? Doubt it. Maybe as a tech enthusiast or someone who is a photographer aficionado, I can understand they may be interested in the best possible smart phone camera. But the average smart phone consumer likely does not Pay attention to articles like this or remotely care which smart phone camera has better lighting.
I’m in agreement here, but Samsung has had cameras that typically take better pics on the whole for the last few years. Really from the iPhone 6S forward. And as others have noted, the Pixel is probably the best overall phone camera wise. Nobody actually buys these phones just for the camera any way, not even ‘pro’ photographers. My wife is a professional photographer and I can’t imagine her buying a smartphone based on its camera.

“Controversial”

Well, when the iPhone isn’t in the top slot anyway
Immediately what I thought when I saw that headline. If the iPhone had been top, "controversial" wouldn't have featured.

When DxO reviewed the iPhone 8 Plus, Macrumors title was:

"DxO Labs says iPhone 8 Plus has the best camera they've ever tested" No mention of DxO being controversial there.

And apparently "The full review is a worthwhile read".

It kind of reminds me of a friend who wouldn’t believe the Nokia Lumia 1020 had a better camera than the iPhone 5s, even though we’re talking about a phone built around the camera vs a phone that has a camera built into it! ‘But it’s xx better than the iPhone 5 which was already pretty much the best!’ ‘megapixels don’t mean anything’!

How much precision is there, really, in a ranking where the smartphones with top marks are all crowded together with little room between them? Love the camera on my iPhone 8 Plus.

Great achievement by Samsung. And the number one spot is quite difficult to achieve now by Apple unless Apple will "copy" the variable aperture feature. It's this feature that makes all the difference because now the camera can adept it's aperture when light conditions changes.

This doesn't mean that the iPhone X model will make terrible pictures but when you can adapt to different light conditions then this does explains the leap forward concerning quality of photo's.
From the adverts I've had to endure on TV it looks like the apertured diaphragm is on the outside of the lens. If that's the case then I would worry about the longevity of the system or what happens to the lens when some dust and debris gets caught up in the mechanism...

That’s why they are ip68 certified.

That stops dust and water getting inside the device, but an aperture diaphragm moving back and forth over the outside of the lens could soon start to cause scratching etc...

Highly doubtful it's outside the housing. That would be an oversight on the level of Apple.

It least it has a headphone jack? xD

Go die apple

Haha yeah! And that ugly notch, right? You probably just forgot to mention that. Newbie mistake, am I right? It’s alright, you can learn from the pros here.

But congrats on your first post, you will be a valued member of Macrumors in no time.

Does the Samsung camera have something like Focos?

• Portrait Camera App 'Focos' Gains Real Lens Optical Effects and Improved Shooting Mode

No? That's a pity…

For videos… Have a look at this one (canary island Fuerteventura) which I made yesterday with the iPhone X. Bad light conditions at night (street lights only). I'm very happy with it.

And a vast majority post their pictures on social media, print a few at Walgreens, so how much quality required. We are moving so fast away from quality as in color correctness. How many actually calibrate their screens anymore. Thus, each of us looking at those pictures are seeing different colors.
