Composition and timing are the most important factors in a great photo. Everything else is secondary. Don’t sweat the specifications.
Was DXO rubbish when the X got a higher score than the Note 8? Just saying ......![]()

Funny how DxO Rankings are not controversial when they put an iPhone at the top. Embarrassing...
Gee, Gillian, let’s put our heads together and noodle on this one. Hmmm...Why? Are iPhone customers the chosen ones?
I’m in agreement here, but Samsung has had cameras that typically take better pics on the whole for the last few years. Really from the iPhone 6S forward. And as others have noted, the Pixel is probably the best overall phone camera wise. Nobody actually buys these phones just for the camera any way, not even ‘pro’ photographers. My wife is a professional photographer and I can’t imagine her buying a smartphone based on its camera.Question. Do You think the average consumer really cares about minimal differences between the smart phone camera manufacturers? Doubt it. Maybe as a tech enthusiast or someone who is a photographer aficionado, I can understand they may be interested in the best possible smart phone camera. But the average smart phone consumer likely does not Pay attention to articles like this or remotely care which smart phone camera has better lighting.
Exactly!!Wonder why DxO's rankings weren't called "controversial" when they declared that the iPhone 8+ had the best camera ever tested?

Immediately what I thought when I saw that headline. If the iPhone had been top, "controversial" wouldn't have featured.“Controversial”
Well, when the iPhone isn’t in the top slot anyway
It kind of reminds me of a friend who wouldn’t believe the Nokia Lumia 1020 had a better camera than the iPhone 5s, even though we’re talking about a phone built around the camera vs a phone that has a camera built into it! ‘But it’s xx better than the iPhone 5 which was already pretty much the best!’ ‘megapixels don’t mean anything’!Immediately what I thought when I saw that headline. If the iPhone had been top, "controversial" wouldn't have featured.
When DxO reviewed the iPhone 8 Plus, Macrumors title was:
"DxO Labs says iPhone 8 Plus has the best camera they've ever tested" No mention of DxO being controversial there.
And apparently "The full review is a worthwhile read".

S9 is brighter because it has a larger sensor as opposed to being washed out...I much prefer the iphone x photo in the example shown. S9 looks washed out.

From the adverts I've had to endure on TV it looks like the apertured diaphragm is on the outside of the lens. If that's the case then I would worry about the longevity of the system or what happens to the lens when some dust and debris gets caught up in the mechanism...Great achievement by Samsung. And the number one spot is quite difficult to achieve now by Apple unless Apple will "copy" the variable aperture feature. It's this feature that makes all the difference because now the camera can adept it's aperture when light conditions changes.
This doesn't mean that the iPhone X model will make terrible pictures but when you can adapt to different light conditions then this does explains the leap forward concerning quality of photo's.

Of course being there always helps. But it seems pretty clear to me at least that the Samsung photo has greater dynamic range, not just pumped up exposure.
I appreciate Apple’s more neutral approach, but I’d also love a better aperture and better dynamic range.
That stops dust and water getting inside the device, but an aperture diaphragm moving back and forth over the outside of the lens could soon start to cause scratching etc...That’s why they are ip68 certified.

It least it has a headphone jack? xD
Go die apple
