Future iPhones may eventually be completely touchless. Imagine that - no more fat-fingerprints on displays while eating Broiler or Pfannkuchen or harte Wurst.
Sorry guys - imagination overdose.

This makes me worry that the prices of all future iPhones will start at least at around the $900 price point.

Don’t worry too much, economies of scale will take care of a good portion of that.
With manufacturing issues behind them the costs of components naturally drops, often considerably with larger orders.

If Apple moves to Face ID on all future devices the orders they place for components are going to be significantly larger. It won’t be for just one phone, it will be three and likely at least two iPad models. That will help drive the costs down a fair bit.

Get their sensor away from the camera lens this time. See Google or Sony (sensor in power button) please.

Did any of you read the story making the rounds today about a husband a wife that was on a flight and he fell asleep. the wife used his finger to unlock his iphone and discovered he was having an affair. She literally went bat crazy ,so much so that the pilot felt it was safer to land the plane at the nearest stop and unload both of them.

The rumors said Apple was looking into Touch ID under screen. Apple themselves said they were not looking at such methods once they’ve realized the potential of Face ID. Face ID have been in development for more than 3 years. About the same time Touch ID was introduced, so Apple was already looking past Touch ID way back then.

I think the rumors were false, it was an easy rumor to spread since it seamed like the next logical move for Apple to make by putting Touch ID in the display.
I'm pretty sure that the rumors were false. Seeing how well Face ID works I don't think they needed a back-up plan here. Also, those rumors were either generated for click-bait purposes or by people who have no idea how engineering works. They can't just change the course of things 4-6 months prior to the actual release of the product. That would've been decided at least a year if not more in advance.

Truth to be told...I don't miss Touch ID at all! Moreover, every time I have to pick up my old 6S Plus, that home button and the fact that you have to press it feels very outdated. Granted, the 8 Plus felt a little more robust due to its new home button, but how many times did it fail to work due to wet hands!
Yes, Face ID might be 1 second slower now than 2nd gen Touch ID, but for the first gen it's absolutely perfect and waaaay better than the first generation of Touch ID. I can see that Apple will only improve it by speeding it up and implementing wider angles to unlock it.

Yup. My iPad also feels old now.

I’m still not convinced Face ID is more secure than Touch ID.

How long it took to spoof TouchID? Remember? A couple of days.

But no one has come up with a FaceID spoofing technique yet (evil brothers don't count).

I think they were exploring it but Apple was downplaying they weren’t because they knew people would wonder if Face ID was the right path forward or not

Samsung can put the FPS wherever they like, until they improve the quality of it, I’m going to end up using a passcode like I do now for my S8+, since it has stopped working reliably and I need to keep re registering my prints to keep it operable at all. Their iris scanner causes a horrible aching lingering pain in my eyes, so I had to disable that option. Face ID is a joke for the reasons stated in the article. So for my S8+, I wasn’t really left with any palatable biometric option.

I’m a bit leery of the face scanning tech on the iPhone X after the pain inflicted on my eyeballs by the Samsung IR technology. So I’ll stick to my 7 Plus. If the face scanner will be the only option Apple offers going forward, I’ll consider other alternatives out there or just use passcodes if I stay with iOS. Personally, I can’t understand Apple putting all its eggs in this one basket. But Apple does a lot I don’t agree with. It doesn’t seem to hurt their bottom line any, so I’ll forgive them for not consulting me about my preferences. ;)

The X has at least 4 things jacking up its price: OLED screen, more complex motherboard, stainless frame, and Face ID hardware. All of those will get cheaper over time except perhaps the stainless frame, which probably isn't a huge adder anyway. I suspect the screen is the main culprit, and if we ever start to get some valid competition between manufacturers with this stuff (it's been almost exclusively Samsung for mobile OLED and LG for TV OLED), then prices could plummet. This should allow Apple to maintain new phone models in the range of $700-800.
The cat is out that bag so to speak. There's no way the prices of iPhone are going to come down.

Geez Samsung not only follows Apple’s innovations cycle but they also copy their technical difficulties cycle.

Simply this.

Your girlfriend/boyfriend can unlock your phone using your fingerprint while you sleep.

They cannot unlock the iPhone X while you sleep unless the wake you by opening your eyelids and force you to look at the phone.

This is how Face ID is more secure. Period.

That's possible, but Apple has also been known to lower prices on certain items like the original iPhone, iPads, MacBook Air, etc... I guess it all depends on if they plan on continuing to make budget models like the SE last year and the 8 this year (it's a budget model compared to the X at least, lol). If so, then their flagships could very well be north of $1k every year.

In retrospect it looks like Touch ID was a temporary solution while they looked for something more robust. As you may recall Touch ID was largely developed by an independent shop that Apple acquired a few months before the 5s came out. It was ready to go while Face ID was still in large scale prototype.

How would you know that it will look 'Dated' if you don't even know what the S9 will look like?

Call it a hunch. ;)

After bashing Apple for months for dropping TouchID, how long before those same users start criticizing Samsung's fingerprint scanner for being, "Old, outdated, behind the times?"
