I am running the 3.0 beta as a developer and I can say it's a bit buggy but not unusable. I think some functions are slower than they used to be, for example opening the network preferences where you can disable 3G is slow to load. But overall I find it very usable. I'm looking forward to the official release which will most likely be faster and more efficient.

hardware

I wonder if that is something At$t is stipulating since the data plan for 3G is $10 more the Original iPhone.

But then again you would think they would offer an option to upgrade to a more expensive plan if that was the case.

In the keynote, they noted that the 1st gen iPhone can't use MMS due to hardware limitations.

Did I hear somewhere we would be getting individual SMS deletion as well?

If so... Has anyone seen any screenshots of the process etc?

I wish they would add a 3G on/off on main settings page.

I posted a lot of screen shots as well. If you guys want to see anything else let me know!

awesome, thanks. Got a question for you - is there now support for multiple signatures in mail (i.e. different sigs for different accounts)? This seems small enough to be one of the unmentioned features, but it's actually kind of a big deal for people who use their iphones for both business and personal email.

OK my question is this to those who are using 3.0...Is it worth just paying $99 for a dev pass so I can get it. Or is it buggy enough that I would want to wait until the final release. That is my big question right now. Answers please. Thanks in advance. :)

ummm its not really buggy at all to be honest. i only have it on my touch (1st gen) and i love it. i think it is amazing, honestly i wouldnt waste your money, once pwnage comes out for it, im sure it will be all over the net, and sense so many people can get it easily like me, im sure someone is dumb enough to leak it. anyways back to 3.0. the iphone is almost near perfect now. honestly copy and paste is so cool and undo is fun. search is a lot of help when you swore you read something but couldn't find it. its not sluggish at all on the touch, but then again, that is the touch it doesn't have any date it needs to be reading.

so ya i wouldnt waste your money its COOL dont get me wrong :) i wish i could show this off to more poeple and act cooler

I can't wait for this update for a lot of reasons, but the one thing that gives me pause is the addition of a spotlight tool. I can see how this might end up being very sluggish on the current hardware. I'd really like to hear more from developers as to how this was implemented and whether or not the system resources handle it well.

Here's a little detail on how Spotlight on the Mac works: the operating system knows whenever a file is created or modified (because the OS has a role in doing that work) so Apple created a system that notifies other programs when this happens.

The Spotlight process picks up these notifications and locates an appropriate "Spotlight Importer" to process the file and tell Spotlight what metadata to index for that file. Spotlight comes with dozens of these importers, but developers can create their own to provide metadata for custom file types.

Spotlight takes all this data, and maintains a giant index of everything on the system. So when you type a search term, the lookup is very fast. If the iPhone works like this, it will be able to keep the entire device index up to date with very little impact on the device's performance/battery life, and the searches should also be fast, which seems to square with the reports I've been hearing.

Great update i cant wait. wonder if 3.0 fully supports the new in ear headphones.

no i dont think it can acutally, its a hardware limitation if i am not mistaken. so volume up and down will not work till you buy a new iphone.

Good point. Apple need to get notes and todos sorted out consistently. All this "is it in Mail or in iCal?" nonsense has to stop.

These two functions are 50% of the reason for a PDA for me. I know the iPhone isn't a PDA but if Google can get this (almost) right then surely Apple can.

I've switched from using mobileme to using Google now for the above reason.

Would be nice if it also sync'd with Notes and Tasks in Outlook, then I can get rid of this heavy planner and just get a Touch and use it as my work PDA... :)

There's so much stuff on my iPhone, I just want to pair it down to just basic phone/SMS/games functions and use a Touch for all the other "stuff"... plus, I hate to co-mingle my personal and work stuff (notes, calendar, etc) :(

Are you talking about the premium headphones? If yes I just tried it and the volume up and down do not work.

It's my understanding that the iPhone 3G lacks the hardware to process the volume up/down signals from the headphones. If that's the case, then they'll never be supported on the current generation of hardware.

I'm glad Spotlight searches Mail, thats a relief.

I really like the SMS send function and that you can start typing right away again.

Also, I am intrigued to see what this Find My Phone is like in MobileMe.

SMS deletion & forward is soooo sweet. I can't wait.

Dvorak Keyboard?

I noticed mention of additional languages support; does anyone know if the Dvorak keyboard layout is included?
