Searching for mail on the server works great. It tells you how many messages you have and it loads pretty fast. I was using a IMAP Gmail account

Thanks.. another question. Does it just search your inbox on the server, or all mailboxes?

MobileMe alias support?

Does anyone know if 3.0 will finally allow us to SEND from MobileMe aliases? This is one of my few gripes about the current mail app.

MMS on German iPhone

Hi, I have installed OS 3.0 Beta 1 and cannot see the camera icon whicht lets you add pictures to a message (MMS). Anyone with the same problem?

I use an official German iPhone 3G from T-Mobile.

Locate phone via mobileme

Any idea if this feature is also in the API so those of us who done use MobileMe don't have to pay $99/year for this one feature?

I presume this means some service can be enabled on the iphone when triggered from Me.com to send GPS co-ordinates? Fingers crossed that isn't too hard for someone to crack...

That MobileMe "Find my iPhone/iPod Touch" feature sounds very cool. Would love to see that working.

I would imagine not, it's a way to sell MobileMe and I doubt Apple would be willing to let you use any old service to find your iPhone.

Find my iPod?

I wonder if this is more like "it was stolen, what city is it in?" or more like "it's somewhere in the house, please make my iPod beep!"

I'd think the second option would be more useful, personally.

I hope both. I tend to forget where I put stuff so having it beep would help.

As for being stolen, 1st gen. iPhones would have a hard time. Since they don't have GPS, they have to use the Wi-Fi/cell tower triangulation technique which is still pretty awful in some places. I just did at work, and it says I'm in the next town or 2 over.

iPod and bluetooth?

The picture on the main site shows that it's a ipod with bluetooth enabled. Is this a screen shot taken on a 2nd gen or just in the SDK?
What can the bluetooth on the 2nd gen do? Transfer data or just audio?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

Looks fantastic. SMS is what it should always have been like.

Thoughts on whether this was an Apple or AT&T decision to not have it this way from the get-go?

Works great so far

I can't wait for this update for a lot of reasons, but the one thing that gives me pause is the addition of a spotlight tool. I can see how this might end up being very sluggish on the current hardware. I'd really like to hear more from developers as to how this was implemented and whether or not the system resources handle it well.

So far it is extremely fast. For example I just typed "Bob" in Spotlight and in less than a second it returned all contacts named Bob and all 800 or so Bob Dylan songs on my iPod.

I'm looking forward to seeing the APIs for integrating with it to make my own apps' data searchable.

I am asking myself why apple come out with that "sneak preview" anyway? Its not Apple at all. What was the purpose of this? Kinda strange.
I think they got something much bigger in their sleeve then which is linked directly to OS 3.0...and that will be iPhone 3.0...so new hardware then...fingers crossed...iChat AV then...and obviously video recording.
Its not wishful thinking...it will be fact...well...hope so:D

MMS Pricing (UK)

I don't know of this may have already been stated.
I am an iPhone 3G user from the UK, I called into my local O2 shop and enquired about how MMS messages will be priced at the release of OS 3.0 (firstly they had no idea what I was talking about and had to phone and ask about it themselfs), apparantally MMS messages will cost the equivilant of 4 SMS messages on top of you current monthly tarrif.
For example I use the £45pm tarrif (1200 min, 500 messages) and I also have the Unlimted Messages Bolt on. So if I was to send a MMS message those 4 messages would be taken out of the origional 500 messages of my contract or I would be charged extra on top of that if I exceed my 500 messages worth. Unfortunatly the MMS messages are not inculded in my 'Unlimited Messages'.

Should have thought twice before being an early adopter.

nah, I've been enjoying my iphone, and free firmware updates, for nearly 2 years now. It's probably the best single purchase I've ever made. And even now we're getting 90% of the new features, free. Sure, I'd like 100%, but I'd rather focus on the positives.

I am wondering if you can copy text into an password field, like the wifi password. I have had to make my passwords simple for use with the iphone. Additionally the wifi auto-login I hope will be location aware turning on wifi when you get to a certain location an logging you in.

You and me both....... If a new phone comes out in June I will pick that one up. But if it doesn't I will be happy with my first gen phone still...

I'm not sure I understand your question. Like I am not a huge IMAP user I don't have like a bunch of folders and things like that. So I don't know if I will be of much help.

Look through your gmail sent mail, and then on your iphone, search for something that should show up in your sent mail, and click 'continue search on server', and see if it searches through your sent mail as well.

I just have a couple questions for someone who already installed the beta 3.0 on their iPhone 3G...

Do most applications that were downloaded from AppStore still work properly?
Will I still be able to upgrade to the final version of 3.0 once its out or is it stuck in "Test Mode" forever as it says in the Apple warning?
Do emoji's still work??

Thanks in advance

Pasting passwords

I just tried pasting text into the wifi password field and it works.

Haven't tried the favorites thing yet.

It's amazing how easily people ignore a legal agreement they entered into when downloading the software

apple said:
Pre–release software is Apple confidential information. Your unauthorized distribution
of pre–release software or disclosure of information relating to pre–release software
(including the posting of screen shots) may subject you to both civil and criminal
liability and result in immediate termination of your iPhone Developer Program
Membership.

The NDA was only ever lifted for released software, i.e. non-beta versions.

I am asking myself why apple come out with that "sneak preview" anyway? Its not Apple at all. What was the purpose of this? Kinda strange.

It's the same reason they did the iPhone SDK event last year: developers need time to build applications. All these features in the OS don't amount to much if developers don't have apps that take advantage of them. So no, it's not at all strange. We're just used to Apple being so secretive about new hardware products, it's easy to forget that they can't apply that same kind of secrecy to software releases that need third-party involvement.

Same. I was planning to get the new one even before yesterday's announcements, but this just makes it a little bit easier to justify. ;)
