Always take (and hold) North America. The game is designed to win from there more often than not.

I usually start with Australia then grow a bit and aim for North America. North America as a first target can be very difficult. If Australia is too crowded and fighting for it would be a suicide, then I just try South America and target North America from there.

It's slightly off-topic at the moment, but iOS needs a proper implementation of Risk. That is one of the best games of all times. If some developers could make Monopoly enjoyable on the Mac and on iOS; surely, another successful board game with a fantastic computer version (my favourite in 2000) deserves a better iVersion.

do you have risk (iphone app) by EA?
i think it's the best of all the apps, i play it everyday, and i really hope that EA will update it to add game center! :]

Thanks Apple for shoving another application down my throat.

Apple needs to revamp the OS so I can get rid of all the unnecessary default application clutter. I have absolutely no use for the iTunes store, Stocks, Game Center, Compass, Voice Memos, or YouTube.

You can create a folder called Annoyed and put all the apple apps in it and move it to the last app page.

No one is forcing to use an iDevice. You are free to replace it with a Motorola RAZR.

Also, iOS 4 allows the user to create folders. Just toss all your unwanted apps into a folder called "Apple," "Twaddle," "I Hate Apple" or "Clutter." Problem solved.

Not a big deal.

Who says I hate Apple? Must anyone who dislikes something about iOS automatically be labeled an Apple hater?

I think it's a poor shadow of what it could have been. Risk deserves something better and more stable. I think the old computer version was pretty good. I'm not saying that they should have copied the computer version. I only wish that they kept the original thrill and built a game that was designed with the iPhone and iPod Touch in mind. EA's version is far from that (or it was when I tried it a few months ago).

I think it looks pretty good. Especially the way comparing you and your friends achievements.

I preferred the original, darker UI:

So I'm liking Game Center & obviously the more games that take advantage the better. It's kinda fun to see your score at the top and watching your friends compete with you for the #1 spot.
I just wish Apple would have implemented a way for you to chat with friends from within GC. Maybe send a request to play a game & compete for points/achievements. I'll keep my fingers crossed for 4.2 maybe?

Okay guys, I might be REALLY dumb but I thought the whole point of gamecenter is too play against friends in a game. Am I right or not?

Me and a friend both have Real Racing and we both are on each others game center list, but can't we play the game together at the same time?

User Interface

I too think the new UI is really quite ugly... looks like something I would make, and I never even use Photoshop/etc. lol. I thought the Darker UI (as pictured above) looked pretty cool. I was very suprised when they switched to this... pool table/casino look. It makes it look cheap to me. Like somebody threw it together in one afternoon and said look what I made...

At this point, Gamecenter is there to show your friends what you did.

It's up to the game developers to enable people to play against each other. It's not really a function of Gamecenter as not every game is multi-player. For example, FlightControl is a single-player game. You just match your high score against others.

It's possible that the Gamecenter backend simply isn't sophisticated enough to enable head-to-head competition at this point. At some point it may. You will probably need to exhibit a bit of patience with Apple, plus provide feedback to their development staff about your interests.

So how do you play pacman on iOS devices? Do you tip the device to change direction? Or do you touch the screen? Just curious.

One game that wouldn't be practical on these: Defender (Unless there are images of buttons on the screen to hit).

I'm hoping they don't mess up the pacman icon like they did the itunes icon...

In before the people who don't get what Game Center is. It's primarily an API for devs to have standardized achievements/leaderboards and multiplayer functionality in their games.

All the Game Center app does is aggregate that info from all the different games on your iPhone/iPod touch in one place. The GC app itself is NOT the big deal.

Yes, and this is not at all clear from anything I heard in SJ's presentation or on Apple's website. I thought it was a space where I could compete head-to-head in games with friends anywhere. Turns out it is just as you say: a Standings Reporter.

Pity, I would have really welcomed what I thought it was.

I played Cro-Mag Rally head-to-head this evening. I'm in Denver and played against a guy in LA. We were even able to talk to one another while playing. Pretty slick.

Maybe, but let us be realistic. An iPhone, for example, has like 25 different ways to contact your friends. Phone, Text, E-mail, facetime, voip, etc etc ...

So it was probably not the highest priority for their framework to have that kind of strucuture in there, because there are already so many ways to contact your "friends" through the same device you are using. Unlike comparable systems like xboxlive or something, which does not inately allow you to chat or communicate with people 25 different ways already.

I am sure something will come eventually, or even just a way to tie currently available communication methods into the game center framework, but it clearly was not a necessity to get going, because it is easy enough for people to contact their friends as it is now.
