In terms of graphics performance, the AMD Radeon Pro 5500m ranks #71 in notebook GPUs on Notebook Check!

That's right a measly #71. For the price, Apple is charging I would feel ripped off for anything less than something in the top #5. Apples hardware is an absolute fraud at this stage, a total ripoff!

Which is not bad actually. It is just below 1060 (which was descent gaming card actually) and above 1650 and 1060 MaxQ. These cards can be used for gaming, and will have descent performance at FHD resolution.
Anything more powerful is not a good fit for ~2kg chassis.

Just stop using USB-C for power delivery also for the MBP, that was the dumb decision Apple made in the first place. I am advocating this since 2016...

Why not earlier? I mean, before 2016 the most Magsafe would deliver was what, 85 watt... and besides, if they wanted to deliver more then 100W over USB-C, they could easily implement it as a vendor-only extension. The cable is certainly thick enough. You are so focused on criticising USB power delivery that you are losing your main message (the "I want fatter GPU in there" one).

I also believe AMD states 85 W power. So I assume that Apple undervolts and / or there is something else being done to use less power.

The Pro variants are lower clocked (around 20% core and 15%), and probably running on slightly lower voltage as well.

You are mixing up cause and effect. Apple decides on the power budget they want their portable devices to use, and then supplies the appropriate charger to meet that power requirement.

Can the new 16” handle VR straight out of the box? Sounds like it should be powerful enough - is it possible?

I did a 4K Unigine Heaven benchmark and got 19fps. Very impressive considering that the 1060 desktop card performs the same. Unfortunately, the 1060 is still faster at lower resolutions.

The last part is not true, I have a Razer blade 15 with 2080 Max Q, and it’s exactly around 2kg in a very compact chassis. Which by the ways allows even 4K gaming.

They probably sacrifice that space for a bad battery though.

I can get around 6 hours or so, which is pretty decent for this machine - obviously doing productivity work and not gaming or video editing.

by the way, here is another thing to keep in mind - most gaming laptops cannot be charged in airplanes as they consume too much power. So in that regard the MBP is in a very sweet spot.

I've got the 5500m too and think it's great, but don't think there's much of a diff from what I've read from the lower one

Sure, but the price difference to upgrade to the 4GB 5500M is minuscule compared to the overall cost of the computer so if you plan on doing any gaming why the hell not? At least that was my justification for it.

Yeah absolutely. I'm happy I was able to flip my 2019 15.4" for the 2016 i9 / 5500m, as big leap for gaming.

It is not wrong. I didn't say it was impossible, there's also msi gs65/75 and the new intel model for example.
While their graphics performance is better than 1650, it is not optimal for this card.
You also need to make more trade offs because you need bigger cooler for this thing, which comes with some costs.

I have nothing against gaming laptops and I have one with 2080mq inside, but attempts to make them thin, miss the point at the moment, in my opinion.

people gaming with this laptop, you experienced issues with ghosting?

Yes the display features more ghosting than previous ones

You should look at Holly Ho Tech videos.. 5500M is very unstable, I went with the 5300M because I only play World of Warcraft

Yes but they will fix and make it stable. We have now a Mcbook that can play games and, for sure, in the future, they‘ll exploit it. (IMO)

If you need more GPU power you are free to buy something else. Clearly Apple feels that 50W is enough for a laptop GPU and they have felt like it for last 20+ years. If that is not enough for you I am surprised you would even consider a MacBook Pro for your computer.

Back the the objective world, the GPU performs more than adequately given the overall laptop specs — it will outperform any other comparable multimedia laptop that is not a dedicated gaming machine. And the price is very competitive when you look at other portable workstations. For instance, a Dell Precision with 5540 with similar specs to the higher-end 16" MBP is currently listed at $3000 — $200 more than the 16" MBP. And the Dell's GPU is weaker, nor does it come with GDDR6 VRAM.

wrong. A workstation will.

any of the new p53’s with any of the RTX cards will eat a MBP like it’s nothing.

typical apple sheep only see one side and the best deal for games is MBP 16 for over 2K o_O
if you have a brain you can find brand new laptop for about the same during Black Friday event but looks like you haven't

GTX1650 is about the same like GTX 1060
Don't use Win 10 if you don't know how to use Windows Update, I see why person like you have problems with Windows 10, no logical thinking from sitting constantly only on MacOS, the 'problem' is sitting between chair and keyboard

Absolutely no need to be so condescending. Some people do things besides gaming on their laptops and Macs have many uses in that regard.

It's nice to have the option to game and that's why the OP started the thread to see what the performance would be like.
