The fact they never update the official amd bootcamp drivers it's a waste what's the point

I'd expect it to be around the RTX 2060 (laptop) level, give or take. At any rate, that is a real feat from AMD at 50W TDP. Then again these GPUs cost an arm and a leg. Must be some cream of the crop parts, and then of course you have HBM2 with 2048-bit bus which by itself is utterly ridiculous for a laptop this size...

You'd be right.. 2060 @90w with a Ryzen 7 4800h. Power draw is much ~20 watts higher from the wall then the 5600m system but with much lower temps somehow.

I've run into an issue with at least one game and the January Red drivers. In the game Control, textures can become very low resolution in expansive, wide open game areas. I mean so bad that the rocks in some areas are pure black, without any features or reflections. Basically a bare model with black skin on it.

In contrast, the same game under Linux renders all the textures properly, though at the cost of more erratic performance. Has anyone else noticed this with Jan. Red package?

@randomhkkid Do the thermal pads make the bottom of the laptop unbearably hot? I.e., unusable as a regular laptop?

In truth I haven't actually used the machine as an actual laptop. My gut feeling is that yes the bottom does get significantly hotter but only happens when you're really pushing the vrm. Browsing the Web and writing docs on your lap shouldn't be a problem. Updated: It's not a problem as heat is not felt on the sides where legs are.

Its not the same GPU. The 5600M Pro is a custom version that has more CUs than the "regular" RX but lower clocks. From pure computational standpoint, the 5600M Pro should be around 9% slower than the RX 5600M, but more CUs mean better utilization in some cases, and Apple's version also has 40% faster memory (the memory bandwidth is actually compatible to "big boys" like the 2080 RTX Max-q).

Overall, the 5600M Pro is basically a desktop Radeon RX 5700XT but with 40% lower core clock. So it's performance should be somewhere around 60% of the 5700XT, give or take (probably a bit under though).

It's interesting on the video above they compare the 5700 XT eGPU on MBP 13 vs 5600m on the MBP 16 and gives better performance well at least on Unigine Heaven, I wonder what would be the difference if it was egpu + MBP 16 instead.

I tested this today with the 16" 2.3 5500M 8GB with a Razer Core X Chroma + 5700 XT and got a Unigine Heaven score of 2059 and 81.8 FPS, so about 10% better performance than 5600M. The main thing for me is that the 16" fans stayed below 2000RPM during the benchmark.

Thanks for the info that's good to know so it's very close, tbh I would rather have the 5600m than an eGPU I don't work on a desk so its kinda impossible for me 😅 if I worked from a desk I would rather get a proper desktop computer instead.

All my previous laptops were windows gaming laptops (all noisy as hell) so I'm used to fan noise, so much that I changed my fans on my MBP to run faster earlier to keep the computer cooler 😆

That looks like a very impressive performance. Shame about the pricing though.

Imagine if they put Ryzen 9 4900U or even 4900HS and this new 5600M GPU in a 14" laptop! That would be a killer product.

I agree, the performance looks unbelievable! I wonder if it's better with the i7 rather than the i9 so that the CPU and GPU aren't fighting for wattage.

Would the 5500M and the 5600M generate the same amount of heat?

Whilst the 16" fans stayed below 2000RPM for you, how were the fans on the Razer Core X Chroma? A bit of googling suggests they're ridiculously loud. Did you find them less loud than the MBP 16?

I wonder if the 5600M would actually be able to keep the fans relatively quiet if it was just running a game at 1080p medium graphics. Rather than the YouTube video above where it’s being pushed to its max.

The 5600M might be most perfect laptop ever released by Apple. Unfortunately, this is all going to be bad if they go ARM next year and these fast GPUs no longer have the ability to use Bootcamp. Going to hold off until WWDC before considering this laptop. Hoping they release their ARM roadmap by then.

I know what you mean, my last few systems were also windows gaming laptops and I did the same thing too! 😁

The 5600m is such at amazing update for those who need more gpu power, 83.8 fps heaven benchmark in windows.

@Egor Zotov Glad that was some help. Just wanted to note that every driver I tried caused some kind of issue except the January Red driver. I briefly re-tried the April Blue driver, but found that some games would cause the MacBook to reboot. So for now I've decided to stick with January Red. I think the modder who hacks the AMD drivers will be back in August, so hopefully we won't have to wait too long for newer drivers.

Did adding thermal pads help you in any noticeable way? I'm leery of making any hardware modifications, even something as minor as thermal pads.

An update to this as I've used my laptop on my lap quite a bit recently. The heat isn't noticeable as it's concentrated on the bottom of the laptop near the screen, along the sides where I have my legs it doesn't get any warmer than I remember pre-mod.

What’s the amd drivers used as the other 16 hasn’t had one update in bootcamp

Okay so I’ve read all 30 pages of this conversation and I’m still not sure if I should purchase a Mac book pro 16 for gaming. I’m knee deep in the Apple eco system and can’t imagine buying a windows laptop but I play games like destiny, division, ESO, the soon to be released cyber punk, most are pc only games. I also want to access my ps4 via remote play and play games off Playstaion now servers. I also play games on stadia which require you to access the servers using chrome and may also access games off steam so that now brings boot camp into the equation, So in a nutshell, can I accomplish this mission on a Mac book pro ?

If you want to play the games natively on your laptop, the 5600M pro could be a decent purchase - Apples $700 is a steep price, but still cheaper than an additional dedicated gaming machine with comparable performance.

If you are using one of the remote gaming services, all the work is done on the servers, so you don’t need a good GPU in your laptop. The quality of your internet connection is going to be the most important factor.

I fully agree with leman over here. I am having the 16 inch 5300M version and i play Warzone on 1920x1200 resolution on medium easily with approximately 80 fps. I wanted to game on my Macbook as well and it is better than i expected. However i would definitely go for the 5600M as it has much higher performance. However, me myself, i am waiting for the new upgrade that is hopefully coming in November. The reason i am waiting is that i would like to have the 10th gen i9 processor in combination with wifi 6 for the reduced latency on wifi, resulting hopefully in a higher score in online games. Plus i really hope, that they will implement a 120 hz promotion display in the MBP, however i think this is wishful thinking. But 120 hz would make such a difference in gaming. So if you do not need it now, you might wait like me, but always remember the 5600M will be a really viable option, however no you are limited to 60 hz (unless you hook up an external display).

You can do anything you want with the new 5600m GPU at native resolution 30-60 FPS.

So you think the machine would handle pc games using steam on boot camp ? I play on stadia using chrome, but older games like division 2 or destiny 2 I would play using steam pc games unless they were also released on Mac like eso.

thanks for your help

‘thank you. I’m worried about pc only released games that I play thru steam and would have to use boot camp and were not released on Mac or are not released on stadia that I can play using chrome and don’t need boot camp

Bootcamp games will be fine. You basically have a RTX 2060 mobile GPU in that Macbook (without ray tracing of course).
