My iPad won't record anything from the input. I plugged in a mic that has a 1/8 inch plug but it doesn't register in garage band. I also tried a mic with a 1/4 inch plug with a 1/8 adapter and that didn't work either. Do I need irig even to use a mic with GarageBand?

That's not an input, it's the headphone jack.

The input it the third (extra) ring on the headphone jack - and you need a special plug to connect to that. Hooking a mic or guitar directly into the jack as you have been could damage them.

So go for the iRig, the Peavey AmpKit Link (which is probably better engineered) or run a USB audio interface into the camera connector.

Ah so the irig plug is deeper so it can reach some 3rd ring inside the headphone jack?

Is there any windows software that open GarageBand files from the iPad? I'd like to just use the touch instruments and record vocals and guitar on my computer so I don't have to buy an irig.

It's not a great solution, but you could export your work from GarageBand as an aac file (or multiple files of each individual instrument via the solo function) and then import it into your DAW on windows.

I'm wondering when they're going to update GarageBand for Mac so we can open iPad files. I wonder how that's going to work, because on the Mac you can use different time signatures and other things you can't on iPad.

BTW, I'm not a piano expert or anything, but the piano sounds on the iPad impress the hell out of me. They really sound great. Not sure what I'm going to do about guitar. I don't have an interface for the iPad yet, but I've used the modelers in Logic 9 and they are definitely usable. I don't expect the iPad ones are very much different save for lack of customization as far as cabinets and micing.

so I bought the peavey ampkit and the mic works but barely. It doesn't register past 10 whatevers when i talk unless I scream into the mic. Is there anything I can do to make the mic louder? There aren't any volume controls on my mic.

It's not designed to work with microphones - it has a high impedance input with low amplification which is more suited to guitar.

You could try using a preamp to boost your signal. The cheapest way to do this is probably to pick up a small low cost mixer (Bheringer can be bought for $cheap)
