WOW! I did that with the Blue Yetti USB mic and the USB hub and it works! Sounds perfect! Cannot wait to mic my guitar cab tomorrow and see what i can do with this... I did a little voice mix and the Yetti sounds crystal clear! This is going to be fun!!!!!!

I was a bit confused at first by what he meant but its simple... Plug the Blue Yetti ( or other usb mic ) into a USB hub, then plug in the MAIN USB out ( the one that goes to your mac ) plug that into the camera connection kit USB dongle and BAM! You have a awesome mic! Wonder what else this would work for...

If you try just plugging in the yetti or any other device by itself, it says it needs more power and cannot work....so this is a fix! ( at least for the mic )

Ok a few questions and maybe some advice...

The 1st question is really bugging me..

1) Can i import a song ( if so, what format does it need to be in ) i like to import backing tracks of songs into garage band ( just the drums, bass and vocals ) and then i lay down some guitar tracks...Each time i go to import a song thru itunes/apps/garage band app /add song...The song is never there on the iPad. Its MP3 format, so i need to convert it to something different? or is this not even possible on the iPad with Garage Band?

2) I have tried plugging my guitar straight into my iPad 2 with a 1/4-3.5 cable and using the built in amps, and its has horrible noise and sound quality.. ( ill admit i get a good clean amp sound, but for distorted its crap ) I have tried running Headphones OUT on my guitar preamp ( Line 6 PODxt, So i can plug in my headphones and jam without a problem ) but if i plug it into the iPad 3.5 and choose audio recorder ( not guitar because i dont want to use the iPad built in amps ) its still has a nasty, noisy , sound...

I just picked up iRig ( which pretty much a 3.5 to 1/4 adapter which i already have but it has a headphone jack built into it which is nice ) I tried this, and the sound quality still is not there? I am confused...

I am not expecting studio quality from the iPad so dont get me wrong, but if i build a amp on my PODxt ( say a Marshall JCM with a 4x12 cab ) and i plug in my headphones to the preamp and it sounds good thru my headphones, why wouldn't it sound the same on the iPad as it does thru my headphones? ( i am talking about, recording, not the actual speaker quality.

Any advice on either of the 2 questions?

So far the best way i have found to record distorted guitar is by using my Blue Yetti USB mic, plugged into the USB port on the camera connection kit and just mic my cab BUT i cant do this if i want to lay down some tracks late at night..

Suggestions, Help, Advice would be great...Thanks!

Does GarageBand app require iOS 4 upgrade for iPad 1?

HELP please...
I bought the GarageBand app for my iPad 1 and cannot get it downloaded onto my iPad. Anyone else have this problem?
Tried several times to download directly into my iPad but was stopped 3/4 thru every time. Prompted to "download purchased app in iTunes" which I did. But when I sync'd GB app still would not load onto my iPad. Got message stating "GarageBand is not compatible with your iPad software."
Don't get it...haven't seen anything online stating compatibility problems.
I have not upgraded to iOS 4...didn't think this was required for GarageBand. Is anyone running GarageBand on an iPad 1 with OS 3.2?

Awesome

Just finished fooling around with it for the past few hours. Was playing some of my own music and fooled around with the awesome loops!!!

Lots of fun!!! :D:apple:

Fantstic 13 minute video review of GarageBand from musicians review website SonicState.

It's a great review - he goes through a lot of features. It's pretty useful as a brief 'how to' lesson too... just to see some examples of how it can be used.

This irig thing sounds great....with it could I plug in an SM58 mic via an XLR to 1/4 in connector :S

Wonder if I buy the USB connector kit could I plug in an mbox mini and use it's mic / midi ports :D

How exactly do you guys plug in your midi keyboards? The same way we plug them into notebooks (ie USB) using the Apple USB adapter?

Any ideas?

I know there's an irig mic, but I'm sire the sm58 is better.

Anyone looking for a quality Microphone option for iOS might want to hold off for this little guy. Apogee makes some great products and I'm hoping Mike will follow suit. No mention of price yet, but I'm speculating around $100.

I just bought GB on the iPad, made a song and when I clicked on Send to iTunes, I got a message saying AAC or GarageBand (it says selecting Garageband will allow me to put the file on another ipad).
So I selected GB and copied the .band folder (it's a folder not a file and I'm running a PC) on my desktop but when I connect the other iPad, it does not allow me to import the folder. Selecting the folder, clicking on it, drag-dropping it all results in nothing; well, clicking on it opens it and then I can copy some blank files or AAC files but they don't show up in the app.
Any advice?

Also, just created a ringtone for myself in under 5 minutes using GB. It's attached if anyone wishes to use it, if I ever get time I may just make the whole thing into a song. If you like, send me a thanks; if not, delete it :)

I'm really enjoying Garage Band (works great with iPad 1) but I was stupid enough to buy the little MIkey to sing into but it says it's not compatible and doesn't work. You'd think the Apple Store guy would have been able to tell me that (I asked him).

Any other ideas for a mic? I'd consider buying the camera connection kit if I thought I could plug my Blue whatever it's called (it's a globe) into it, but I watched that mic crash in a YouTube video when plugged into the USB port of the camera connection kit.

The actual tiny hole mic* on the iPad doesn't have the worst sound in the world but I would like to get decent vocals.

As for Midi instruments -- how are people connecting them? through that same USB port on the camera connection kit? I thought that only worked with cameras. Is iPad 2 configured differently so that the camera connection kit USB port is now working with these MIDI devices? If so I guess I'm out of luck with my iPad 1.

*I call it the urethra mike.

iOS4 supports midi in and out over the expansion connector - and it is possible to use generic USB/midi devices connected via the camera interface. It's also possible to use generic USB audio interface devices too. This thread (on another forum) is doing a good job tracking compatible devices.

Although the iPad supports midi in and out, I think GarageBand only accepts midi in (I don't think you can send a recorded midi track out to an external device).

Watch the review video I posted a link to (above) to see GarageBand on an iPad 1 being used with an external midi keyboard.

The main problem with the iPad is the small amount of power available over the camera connector - this causes some interfaces to crash. People are reporting success running higher power interfaces via a powered USB hub.

I have a Blue YETI mic ( same league as the Blue Snowmall ) It is a USB mic...If you plug the mic straight into the USB port on the camera connection kit, it will not work..BUT if you run the mic to a powered USB hub and then plug a USB cable from the USB hub to the iPad 2 camera connection kit, its works perfectly, with no issues. I mic my guitar cab and have done some audio voice samples with it and it does work.

and ALSO ( for guitar players and bass player ) Digitech has announed that there RP line of effects units work with the iPad 1 and 2 connectiing directly to the camera connection kit USB dongle WITHOUT the need for a powered hub. I went out and picked up a RP355 and it works awesome! connects directly to the iPad and records HD audio via USB. You can use the presets that come loaded, or build your own using X-Edit from Digitech on your Mac ( or PC ), build you presets/amps and then plus it into your iPad and your good to go! Now i can jam and lay down tracks late at night. Sounds REALLY also..

I plan on making a "how to" video and posting it to you tube in the next coming days...

The units that DO work wih the iPad are RP155, RP255, RP355, RP 355 for bass, RP500 and RP1000.

I bought iRig and found it to be overpriced and a little "cheap" for what it was. A lot of noise also.

The cheapest RP unit is only 89.00, well worth it and beats any other device out there in the price range.

Awesome, thanks for the tip.
Did you have a chance to compare the garageband built in amps/effects and Digitech RP ?

Wonder whether I 'd better get one of these units instead of the Apogee Jam...

The built in amps in garage band are fine if your playing clean, but if you want a decent rock or metal tone they don't cut it, also the RP has a AUX input so you could input another device to record, for instance I wanted to import a backing track I found into garage band, since apple doesn't let you import anything into garage band for the ipad at the moment I silmpy plugged my iMac out to the AUX in and recorded the track straight into garage band, now I have a backing track for a song I want to play ( it's drums, bass and vocal only ) now I can layer in my guitar tracks....

Is it possible to have different sections in different keys? I create a track in one section in one key and try to create another track in another section in another key and it changes the key for the first track and seems to make that the key for the entire song...

My iPad won't record anything from the input. I plugged in a mic that has a 1/8 inch plug but it doesn't register in garage band. I also tried a mic with a 1/4 inch plug with a 1/8 adapter and that didn't work either. Do I need irig even to use a mic with GarageBand?
