It could only do AIFF and AAC, so don't panic.

Panic is a sudden sensation of fear which is so strong as to dominate or prevent reason and logical thinking, replacing it with overwhelming feelings of anxiety and frantic agitation consistent with an animalistic fight-or-flight reaction.

I'm not following you.

It just seemed to me that MP3 export functionality is as basic to a modern music production program as mouse interface support. Just saying.

So is this a new thing?? Apple removing features, only to introduce them as new features again..

Nah, it's been going on for a number of years. Backlit keyboard removed from MBA, then reintroduced, for one. I'd like to think that Apple react to people's complaints, and if there's enough justification, they'll reintroduce a feature. :D :apple:

I wish I was more competent in the music making. GB looks like a lot of fun to work with. I seem to be somewhat tone deaf/stupid I guess

Nope, been going on forever. Remember Leopard and the translucent menu bar with no option to make it opaque? 10.5.2 brought that option to the table.

GB Drummer

I have to say I love the drummer feature - it's making my demos sound MUCH more like my songs with a real drummer.

Here's one just for fun:

The version of that song with a static beatbox was so much less fun to listen to - I love the fact that the AI drummer seems to know where to rush and drag too.

Happy about the update too.

The FX stuff is the major thing I hope they fix.

As to drummers, I was originally unplussed and didn't find any use for them, but lately, I've been using them quite often to generate tracks for short radio jingles. Unlike loops, if you shorten a pattern, it will try to "end" where you shorten it to. I was surprised, when I was trying to shorten drums at a crash cymbal, to hear it actually end there instead of having other things going on as if the pattern would have continued.

There's much more to the drummer than I first realized.

Apple has really rocked the house with GarageBand. It's a pretty fantastic DAW. I've used a lot of them professionally, and the best ones are the ones that let the musician/engineer create without getting bogged down in a learning curve. I'm still a Presonus StudioOne man, but for songwriting, GB has the baton. Also - the Drummer feature makes it a major player in forming drum tracks. I sold my v-drums because I (a non-drummer) got better results from Drummer. So I form my actual drum parts in GB, export them, import into StudioOne and record the rest of my song. No other DAW has a drum track feature that's near as organic and easy to use as GarageBand (Logic Pro X obviously does). BOOYA! Looking forward to the extra drummers.

And to answer someone else's issue with the "in-app purchase" avenue... Apple does the in-app purchase for the extras because of licensing and royalties they have to pay for the loops and samples. That's their way of keeping GarageBand free in the AppStore, but having the option to gain more content. In all honesty, the Drummer alone, if it were a stand-alone plug-in, could easily go for $500.

I am a Drummer

I am a drummer. I record my own drums thru mics, so no need to pay for drum sets.

Yes, but the drummers in Garage Band don't drink your beer, hit on your girlfriend, not show up when they are supposed to and can actually keep accurate time.

(Not saying this applies to you, but most of the drummers I've worked with.)

Not sure what you're referring to. AU plug-ins and all that were always in there. It was just rearranged. It's actually better because each instrument/amp/guitar whatever now has its own interface.

Audio Unit effects are there, but not all the other effects that used to come with Garageband. Any extra effects included in the presets can't be edited. They dumbed down the effects part of the program.

Hi, I have Garageband 6.0.5. Am I supposed to get this update? Were there any other versions (i.e. version 7, version 8, etc) in between my current version and this newly released version?

You get a free update to Garageband 10, which is actually the version right after 6.0.5. (it skips right to 10)

strange ... it didn't show up as a Software Update on my mac ? Had to go and re-download from the Appstore

Yeah, me too. Although, to be honest, I've never used it, since I have Logic Pro X. When I did run up Garage Band, a dialog box popped up saying a new version was available, and it linked to the App Store.

Ok. Thanks for the information. But for some reason, I'm not getting the notification for this update from App Store. If go to the purchase tab of the Mac App Store and check the Garageband entry in the list, it just says "Installed" where it should supposed to be labeled as "Update" or something. If I search for Garageband from the Mac App Store and visit the page for Garageband, the button title says "Free" instead of "Installed" or "Update"!

I remember my Mac behaved strangely recently when I tried to update Xcode too. Maybe something wrong with my Apple account?

I'm happy they finally decided to add MP3 support back into it. I've been sticking with the previous version all along.

However, rendering my typical tracks in MP3 with v.10 is still increasing the average file size by 10MB vs. the same track in v.6.0.5 of Garageband.

External Audio Units Effects and Softsynths

Read this to get your Audio Units effects and softsynths working again:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5469006

The user leonie in that thread shows how it's done with a screenshot.

I was able to confirm I was able to run some of my payware softsynths. Same goes for effects.

The only things that won't run are items that are 32-bit.

So check your vendor and make sure you can get a 64-bit version and try the tips here and see.

The instruments update would never finish here even in safe mode. Finally just uninstalled it all. Have LPX anyway...

I don't personally see a need for Export to MP3, but to each his own. It's not like you couldn't add a song to SoundCloud/iTunes/BandCamp with the other formats. But I'm certainly glad they added it back. I just never used it.

I get that you may not have used mp3 very much... but you really don't see the need to export to mp3 in general?? It's literally the most common audio format used today... ;)

That's not true.

In the old Garageband, you could add any FX to any instrument. In this new version, you can only change the ones Apple had preset with that instrument.

For example, if I had a piano up on Garageband 2011, I could add "Bitcrusher" to any instrument. You can't do that with the newest Garageband. Also, Apple took away FX Presets.

Man oh man, THIS. I found that change particularly frustrating. I largely enjoy the new garageband otherwise, but Apple has a strange mentality when it comes to software "updates". Let's just cut off the testicles of creativity and flexibility...!

Would be really nice if Apple actually added an MP3 encoder to the operating system. Applications can convert to AIFF and AAC (including VBR and HE) by calling operating system functions that are available on every Mac, but not to MP3 without adding their own MP3 encoder code.

One more thing.....

Those of you with this newer version of Garageband should know that the old version of Garageband with the old interface is still on your drive. FYI.

I do agree, they probably got a project manager in who thinks option anxiety is a big problem and reduced the ability to allow per-channel FX easily. I'm sure it's doable, just not where.

Hence, I have two versions of this app on my machine.

Or I wonder if this isn't a way for them to get more people to buy Logic?
