Not quite, you've left out two of Apple's biggest selling iOS devices. The Wi-fi only iPad, and the iPod Touch.

You're absolutely right. I forgot to mention these iOS devices. However these are also included in Steve Jobs' announcement that 260,000 iOS devices get activated every day. So Android smartphones almost sell as good as iPhones and iPads (Wifi and 3G) and iPod touch and AppleTV *together*.

As an aside, the way these numbers were released is pointless. If you want to do OS market share comparisons, include all the devices with that OS. If you want to do phone market share comparisons, don't lump every phone with a single OS into a single category

The comparison comes from Steve Jobs. I think Apple's CEO can decide himself which comparisons to make. If you're saying that his statement was pointless, ok, but that's nothing really new...

I'm pleased Android groups are managing well, though. I have no cause to glimpse them fail. But I manage like Apple's methodology more which is why I've been cramping up on Cocoa Touch development. It's many more joy that the C# I've been managing for 9 years.

So Apple with 2 models is doing a good job of keeping up with how many different Adorid models? And how many Adorid phones have been BOGO or just out right free?

It's not that.

iOS = available to ~20% of wireless customers.
Android = available to 100% of wireless customers.

I think the availability only goes some way to explaining this as that really only applies in the US. I think the very biggest restraint on the iPhone is the price, so I think it's more likely to be:

iOS = priced for 20% of wireless customers
Android = priced for 90%+ of wireless customers.

Android has the advantage of being available on múltiple carriers.

But if I had the option of getting an iPhone on T-Mobile, I would choose the iPhone over the Android anytime.

I know someone who owns a Droid phone, and he hates it. He told me it performs terribly, and regrets getting it. Well, that was a surprise to me!

BINGO!

Let's check the quarter numbers for the quarter AFTER Verizon gets the iPhone.
That should be a huge surge in the U.S. Lots of people on Verizon have been settling on an Android phone because they don't want to switch carriers.

The world is much bigger than the USA, and out here in the rest of the world, the iPhone has been available on multiple carriers for years.

This shows that Apple may have made a big mistake in having the exclusivity contract with AT&T for so long. Had they allowed the iPhone to be carried by more vendors, maybe iOS would be more widespread.

I do agree with a person who posted above me in that I prefer the quality of the iPhone/iOS over the Android platform. This is why I like Apple products better than any other - quality.

Maybe Apple would have been better off being on other carriers right out of the gate. However, at the time, the exclusivity deal was the best Apple could do. Apple talked to several carriers, and AT&T was the only carrier that would cede complete control of the platform to Apple. In other countries, as soon as Apple ended exclusivity and started being available on other carriers, Apple's market share shot up.

Funny how the Apple enthusiasts totally undervalue the power of search, and it's revenue potential.

Yes, Apple makes money from their hardware sales, but do you know whose making the dough every time someone searches on their smartphone? Google. Every time someone searches, kaching! Multiply that to all carriers in the U.S. Now scale it worldwide. Double kaching!

Don't underestimate the revenue potential of search. Hardware is bought once, search lives on with the smartphone for years to come.

Why did Uncle Steve go off in the earnings report? I mean, why would he be so antagonistic to Google? Apple sold over 19 million iPhones, so whats with the anger? Here's why. Latest Mobile Mix Report indicates that Android revenue exceeded iPhone-only revenue on their network amidst strong iOS growth.

For those spouting off statistics/numbers from nowhere, you're an idiot. If you're going to give a precise number, back it up with sources. Otherwise said claim is null.

Let me tell you about a deal Verizon made with Microsoft. Verizon agreed to make Bing the default search engine on certain phones that Verizon carried. This setting was baked into the root, so users could not change this to Google.

Looking forward, Gartner expects 2011 to be a big year for media tablets like Apple's iPad. It projects nearly 55 million tablet devices to be sold next year. It also predicts that it will be another big year for Apple, in general. “To a developer, the iPod Touch and iPhone (and to a lesser extent the iPad) are effectively the same device and a single market opportunity. While Android is increasingly available on media tablets and media players like the Galaxy Player, it lags far behind iOS's multi-device presence," Milanesi said. "Apple claims it is activating around 275,000 iOS devices per day on average — that's a compelling market for any developer. And developers' applications in turn attract users.”

Good on google though for raising their employees salaries by 10% and giving a holiday bonus of $1000. I'm sure anyone would appreciate a 10% increase in pay!

Yeah, but sucks to be the guy that leaked it. Heard he got fired for it..

Some people mentioned they'd tried an Android phone but it was laggy. I just bought a used Samsung Intercept for development testing, and yeah it's pretty slow. I can see why underpowered devices like that one can give Android a bad rap, similar to using iOS 4 on an older iPhone.

On the other hand, the Droid Incredible is quick and smooth. Apparently popular too. I just got back from a vacation and was surprised to see them in use all over the place. By a lot of women, too, which doesn't seem to jibe with the supposed Android-is-75%-male statistic.

Now I see news about the HTC Mecha/Incredible-4G due out soon on Verizon, with LTE support and an EVO-sized screen. I think I'm actually drooling.

What is the total number of iOS devices sold, and the total number of Android devices sold?

These numbers are only for specific quarters. What about all-time?

I want a site like http://nexgenwars.com/ (numbers for the three major game consoles) but for smartphones.

Spot on, android offers far more VFM than iOS

Well value for money is subjective. What isn't subjective is that there are plenty of Android devices out there that are much cheaper than the iPhone. Just look at phones like the Orange San Francisco; a full featured 3.5" capacitive OLED screen device for £99 on PAYG, nearly 5 times cheaper than the iPhone 4, and it does an awful lot for those £99.

Umm yeah, VERY subjective ...

I've been using an Android phone for months now, coming from 2 previous iPhones. I can tell you in MY situation? The iOS offered FAR more value.

The *only* reason I switched from the iPhone was due to AT&T's poor service and high prices. It had nothing to do with the hardware itself.

If the iPhone ever becomes available in the U.S. with other carriers that have better pricing? I'd switch back immediately!

Want one concrete example of Android FAIL? It can't connect via wi-fi through a proxy server! That means all day when I'm at work, I'm unable to use their fast wi-fi network with my Android phone, although my iPhone always used it just fine.

Fanboy? No, not me. I am not all Apple all the time. That was just a story of my experience with my 3GS. I've not bumped into anyone yet who has negatively criticized the iPhone. If someone had, I would mention it.

I'm not at all impressed by the explosion of Android. I say that because I like many folks expected that to happen. They have more carriers and device makers. That alone will sell way more than the iPhone on one carrier and a few models.

I personally don't have anything against Android at all. I'm glad it's out there to help drive innovation and give consumers a choice.

i just signed on with att and the iphone 4 - so let the record show that i am an iphone fan still and continue to be.

where i have issue is with the apple forum members that are quick to say android is crap, android is ugly, etc.

i've used the phone for a little and it's pretty nice. I want a voice command button! i want google maps navigation! i want better gmail support - notifications !

that's all i'm saying. u have to look at both sides of things and one cannot just have 100% bias here.

sure this is an apple site but those of you who make disparaging statements lose here.

Know thy enemy

Funny how "Fanboy" is how the universal word for someone who does not agree with you. What ever happened to making an argument? Todays laziness kills me.

Who gives a rip who is in first place for sales "this" quarter. Buy what you want and enjoy it, speak with your wallet, it is much more effective then creating a account called "IHateSteveJobs" on a Apple site.

i think that the sales makes a point that android is becoming a behemoth.

Look - steve jobs is a genius. my screename is merely poking fun that he fathered a bastard child which he denied

as far as a counter argument - please read above and feel free to discuss further via PM or on here :)

Posts like this make me laugh. Hard.

There is only 4 iPhones with one being obsolete, and another closing in.

How many Android devices are there? At least 10..

If by at least 10, you mean at least 300, yeah you'd be right.
