Earlier this month, research firm IDC released sales figures for 2009 showing Apple holding 14.4% of the smartphone market for the year on nearly 82% sales growth over 2008, with the company grabbing third place among smartphone vendors behind Nokia and Research in Motion.

Gartner today released similar results taking a slightly different look at its data by opting to rank smartphone sales by operating system rather than handset manufacturer. Gartner's data for Apple is consistent with IDC's for 2009, showing the iPhone OS holding third place with a 14.4% share, but Gartner's data more clearly shows the significant-but-slipping lead held by Symbian OS, as well as the iPhone's surge past a slumping Windows Mobile. The data also reveals tremendous growth from Android in 2009, surging more than tenfold in unit sales to grab nearly 4% of the smartphone market.

Gartner also presented data for worldwide sales of all mobile phones for 2009, which came in at over 1.2 billion, down slightly from 2008. But with smartphone sales accounting for only 14% of the total market and the iPhone holding only 14% of that smaller market, Apple was unable to break into the top five total mobile phone vendors.

Android

It's funny that everyone talks that iphone doubled it sales, but no one put attention that Android multiplied itself ten times over the same period

Actually, Apple claimed SECOND place.

With some notable exceptions, most of Nokia's garbageware doesn't count.

It is interesting that Gartner doesn't realize that Android is really just Linux. Separating them looks dumb

I would think a site that caters to fans of the Android platform would tout that number. But in case you've missed the notice of it, this site is concerned primarily with Apple and its products.
typical fan-boy comment. Analyzing any product is senseless until compared to competing ones

I'm curious how the negative publicity about Apple's controversial removal of apps will effect marketshare over the coming months. I have a feeling this could possibly bite Apple in the back.

It's much easier to get a tenfold increase when you are starting out on a network (Verizon) as opposed to selling to a mature market (AT+T). The longer it goes without the iPhone moving to Verizon, the less likely it will be that the iPhone will move to Verizon as the Droid starts to saturate the Verizon market. Of more interest to me will be the churn statistics from AT+T and Verizon.

Market share is a comparison (usually by either sales revenue or volume) among the competing products within the same market.

The market-share takes into account the growth of all competing products (including any growth of sales of Android based phones). It just is not being broken down here on a product-by-product basis.

No one I meant not only this site

I understand. The article linked to does delve into the performance of Android and Apple.

The two best performers in 2009 were Android and Apple. Android increased its market share by 3.5 percentage points in 2009, while Apple's share grew by 6.2 percentage points from 2008, which helped it move to the No. 3 position and displace Microsoft Windows Mobile.

“Android's success experienced in the fourth quarter of 2009 should continue into 2010 as more manufacturers launch Android products, but some CSPs and manufacturers have expressed growing concern about Google's intentions in the mobile market,” Ms Cozza said. “If such concerns cause manufacturers to change their product strategies or CSPs to change which devices they stock, this might hinder Android's growth in 2010.”

The Android data is present for analysis. But the headline is Apple's performance on an Apple-focused website.

Yeah. And if Android keeps going at that pace, Apple will be toast next year and have lost all of its market share to Android. Quite obviously, the Android market is exploding.

Right now, the iPhone is only three times as big as Android. If I was Apple, I would begin to worry. And pulling flesh (yes, flesh, not Flash) apps from the AppStore won't help them to further improve their position.

Apple lost market share in the important holiday quarter and in the current quarter the iPhone isn't doing any better as everyone expects the 4G to be released.

true growth happens if:

1. the market has grown
2 who has had the uplift to grow the market ( ie. which brand has grown the market)

I never noticed the iphone until I got one..now every bugger and his dog has one!!!

Android and the upcoming WinPho7 is going to make a dent in apple's market share. There is room enough for all three. I seriously do not want total apple dominance.

But who was most profitable? I'm not sure Apple are that concerned with market share (unless they're dominant, then they shout it from the rooftops )

While it's true that Android seems to be successful (which is good), RIM + iPhone grew much more in numbers than Android.

Relative market share increases mean absolutely nothing when you're coming from practically zero.

It's funny that some people don't seem to realize that ten times almost nothing doesn't equal much.

And, as others have pointed out, you are on macrumors, not androidrumors. So what exactly did you expect?

 It's easier to grow 10 times when you are comparing a half year of Android sales (2008) to a full year (2009). Android sold 60% as many units in its first full year that Apple sold iPhones in its first full year.

Folks, it makes little difference what Android does. Apple is doing exceptionally well in the computer marketplace while only having a small percentage of that market. In music players it has a dominant position, and also does well. That's the market where it pays to dominate. But the phone market? As long as they are selling iPhone (and boy are they doing that!), and as long as they have a decent chunk of the market (and they already have that), Apple will be just fine.

Just look around you and count the iPhones. Now count the Androids. See the huge difference? And even if Android grows ten times over the next year (and frankly, why would they since they appeal to the geek crowd), Apple will still be very successful. The phone market is so huge, there is room for all to succeed.

Apple is in the top 5 when it's by revenue.

Judging by "volume" is like comparing selling 100 million dollar meals at $1 each as opposed to selling 10 million filet mignons at $200 each. OMG the dollar menu must be better!

Well if the iPhone stays locked to ATT and Android continues to add phones across all carriers it's only a matter of time before the iPhone is passed.

Nope. Windows mobile is on all carriers. Android targets the same users.
