Bingo. If you're really scared, meet at a police station or mall. Nobody is that stupid to pull **** there.

No one is stupid enough to try an pull off a felony at a mall? Are you nuts? Malls have the highest rate of crime than any other type of real estate.

Yeah, because no crime ever happens out in public, on busy streets, or around other people.

Give me a break. Do you really think that somebody is going to club you over the head in a public place full of people that also have iPhones for your iPhone? Do you actually believe that these people are going to take the time to respond to an ad and communicate back and forth with you and set up a meeting and drive to meet you somewhere so they can jack your phone?

I've used Gazelle three times, they're fast, I've always been paid the full quote and my time and safety are more important than getting a higher price. I never bother to sell on Craigslist, it's just too risky.

"Police: Armed men steal iPhone from Craigslist seller, resell it

If you scour the internet, you can find an example or two of someone who supposedly got robbed meeting somebody from Craig's list. In this example, the seller met them in the parking lot, which is obviously stupid.
In other cases I've heard of, somebody actually had the buyer come to their house. Hello... McFly...

Meet inside a public place (I usually pick Starbucks) and you are completely safe.

Use your head. A Starbucks is full of people with high end smartphones. Is somebody really going to go through all that to steal yours?

Don't use craigs list. My rule of thumb is never do a business deal you feel the need to carry a gun to.

CL is great. I've sold every iPhone I've owned there and NEVER had a single problem. I establish a line of communication via text or phone before we meet, set up a meeting point in a public area, and just use a bit of common sense. Just following a few simple rules can make CL a great place to buy and sell. I always get top dollar, no fees, & quick hand to hand transactions.

Dumb luck. Eventually you hook up with someone bad. During an online transaction, you may be out a few bucks, but during a CL meeting, you can end up robbed and beaten.

Nice try.

Our CFO & CEO met for coffee & an impromptu meeting in Starbucks located in the Financial District of San Francisco @ 10 AM on a Tuesday. A man ran in, snatched the CFO's Retina MBP right off the table where he was sitting using it, with the CEO present. Neither had time to react it was done so quickly. Not only that its a well known "snatch & grab" crime in major metro business districts.

Heads up to you... Crime is everywhere.

Your story perfectly backs up the second part of that post. It's much easier to steal something without warning than to communicate with your victim beforehand and go through the hassle of arranging a meeting. You're more likely to be robbed as an ordinary Starbucks customer than as someone who arranged a meeting there.

Craigslist is a perfectly safe way to sell something if you use your head. If you don't talk on the phone, if you don't set the meeting place, if you choose an isolated spot to meet...you're increasing your chances of being a victim.

You want fast? Apple store trade in. Less money, very convenient.

I thought you could only use Apple trade in credit towards a subsidized phone? I thought I read that somewhere, but hope I'm wrong as I'd consider trading in my ip5 but I always buy full price.

You're correct but that method is literally the fastest way to get rid of the iPhone. You could use your old device up until launch. Some people like to sell their old phone before launch for value reasons. No time gap with the apple trade in. I might do it because I'm eligible for an upgrade and I hope the trade in value is at least the same as on contract price.

Ahh too bad, it does me no good then as I buy my phones unsubsidized/full price.

Plan on selling mine on Craiglist for $650(64gb iPhone 5)...

Hmm you think you will get that much? I'm seeing 32gb ones listed for a long time at $550, I have my 32gb listed at $545 and no bites in the last 3 days. Although my area is very metropolitan so maybe there are too many phones on CL.

It's fine if you get paid right away on ebay.

I had three buyers back out of paying for my items this past month. I have to wait 3-4 days before I can file a non paying bidder request, and then wait some more time to relist in case they actually do follow through with the payment.

You make my point better than I could. If somebody wants to steal something, they can just run into any Starbucks and do it anytime. They aren't going to go through all of the trouble of setting up a meeting to steal your phone. Your right, crime is everywhere and the only way to avoid it to stay home, oh wait...

Complete and utter nonsense, sorry. You have just as much chance of getting robbed and beaten going to a Starbucks for a latte. And I'm sure I could scrounge up a few news reports of that happening.

Exactly

I've used them before. It was fast, and worked well. I know I could probably get more more money for my stuff elsewhere, but they take care of all the shipping and hassle, so to me, they're worth it.

I stopped selling high-value items on ebay a few years back. I'd rather get a slightly lower than average price from trade in sites than no price at all (transaction disputes), which is highly plausible with ebay. Then there's the fees which seem to get higher and higher. Then you have to deal with postage too.

Too much hassle.

Precisely. My thoughts mirror yours, the difference in the price means nothing to me. I've got too many other fun ways of spending my time. Those who vehemently defend using Craig's, Ebay, or others, are operating from a different perspective.

Do you guys defending these sites really get that good of an offer? On Gazelle I get an offer of $300 for my 32gb iphone 5 in flawless condition. I would think I could get $500 pretty easily on CL. Some make it seem like it's a trivial amount to lose to have the safety of an instant payment, but $300 to $500 doesn't seem trivial to me at all.

Let me put it this way. I got a price from gazelle that I was happy to get. Yes, I fully admit that I could have gotten more money from CL, if I sold my iPhone through that site vs. the trade in.

Now, as I was searching through CL, I saw hundreds and hundreds of iPhone 4s (not 4s but four plural) for sale as everyone else was unloading their old phone. then there was the price competition of the 4s (not plural but the model ;) ). Meaning over supply was driving down the cost and in all likelihood turn around time was going to suffer. Get less money now, or work through the headaches of selling it on CL and taking potentially several weeks. Then there's the headaches of dealing with the scammers, spammers and people making outrageously low ball offers.

I'm not saying CL is a bad place, but for quick money that is headache free, I was happy with Gazelle.

Gazelle was within 30 bucks of the average pre-negotiation asking price on my local craigslist for an old 4S that I have. Seems like a no brainer.

I've sold 4 phones on craigslist and the low-ballers and scammers get tiring. I'm sure it would be worth it for an iPhone 5, (until tomorrow anyway) but for an older phone ... too much hassle.

And they have a 30 day lock. I like that I can wait until I get my new device to send my old one in. No need to sell early to get the "best" sale.

It's all good, I completely understand. It just seemed as if people were saying getting an extra 20 bucks on CL wasn't worth it, when in reality it is substantially more. But I completely understand where you are coming from. I've just happened to have lots of good and very easy experiences on CL so it's not too much of a concern for me.

I definitely don't see hundreds of iphones on CL, and I'm in Northern NJ which is about as dense of a population as you get short of being in NYC. I'm seeing about 3-4 listed each day, maybe 20-30 of them if you go backwards a week or 2, and that's not including reposts.

I locked in my $320 with gazelle though, they keep it for over 30 days (until 10/15) so I feel pretty comfortable just letting my iphone sit on CL for 30 days and having either option.
