Bugger! I hope this information is incorrect! Otherwise consider my positive vote to be a negative one.
Maybe the old iPods simply don't have enough EEPROM space for the Genius functionality... either way, you can still generate Genius playlists on your computer and copy them to your iPod.

NEWS!!! CNET just updated their page (http://crave.cnet.co.uk/digitalmusic/0,39029432,49298843,00.htm) about the new iPod classic:

Update: Apple gave us a call last night, and apparently the resident iPod 'expert' at the event the other day wasn't as much of an expert as we'd hoped. Apparently there aren't plans to offer a free Genius-enabling update to the original iPod classic. This was, by the way, the same expert who told us high-definition iTunes downloads would be supported by the new iPod classic -- something that turned out to be only vaguely accurate.

Sorry guys!

Oh well. I'm not going to go out and buy a smaller 120 GB Classic just for this feature. That may be what Apple is hoping for but it's really a feature everyone of us can live without.

Why don't they include the new user interface featured on the new nanos on the new iPod Classics? The old interface is vastly inferior to the new one. Because the Classic still has the old UI, I have no intention of buying one.

Because the new nano interface is built for a portrait display, which is the same orientation as the Touch/iPhone. So portrait iPods get Genius.

The Gen3 Nano and iPod Classic have a landscape display, so they will continue to have the same features. The new Classic 120GB feature is a "Browse this Album/Artist" after holding down the middle button in the now playing screen. I expect this feature to trickle down to the 80/160 Classics and Gen3 Nano.

Speak for yourself... I've been playing with Genius on iTunes for a couple days and I'm pretty addicted. I'd love to have this on an iPod. I'm actually returning the 160GB I bought from Apple to wait out the 240GB (if it happens in January), or I'm just going to buy the 120GB (and cram my collection in).

That information is very disappointing. This failure to offer the update to the 1g classics seems like nothing more than stinginess on Apple's behalf. If they expect people to 'trade-up' their older classic's then their gamble will most certainly fail. If it is a hardware issue, then it's just a shame.

I bet Sarbanes Oxley has more to do with that than stinginess or hardware limitations. That said, I still hope they will offer a way to upgrade the 1g classics with Genius, even if it is a paid upgrade.

i encourage everyone to email Steve Jobs about this:

steve@mac.com
sjobs@apple.com

it's an absolute joke.

The 120GB iPod Classic has the same hardware as my 160GB iPod Classic. I love Genius playlists, but I'm not about to go out and buy a new iPod with 40GB less HD space just to get it. Why not just give us the upgrade?!

Exactly. If they had offered something larger than 160GB then fine expect me to buy it and I would have, but only offering this feature on the lesser 120GB model is frustrating and kind of insulting. Still, that source seems flaky so I am holding out that it is in fact the plan to update the 1st gen Classics with this new firmware.

It would be so stupid not to implement it in the classic.
With the increasing number of tracks on a device the accuracy of genius gets better and better and no one doubts that the classic can hold the most...
But I think it has something to do with this "if you get more functionality with a softwareupdate we have to charge you, except you have an iphone..." kind of thing

But that's not consistent with first gen iPod touch owners who have 2.0, as they are getting the genius functionality for nothing in 2.1.

More likely just that the Classic is no longer a strategic product.

I don't understand what you mean, changing the type of music I listen to. I never mentioned what type of music I listen to. I can't even do that because there is no way to describe all of it. Genres aren't applicable to my tastes. I couldn't pick just one (like "rock"...)

I have a very diverse music collection... Flogging Molly is just one example. I don't even listen to them very often. Lol. You think that's all I listen to?

I haven't even tried Genius yet, but its not something I'm terribly excited about. Neat, yes. Amazing, not really. I'd have to try it on my family desktop which only has my sister's music on it (which is not all that interesting, considering she's 12...) I won't be able to fully appreciate this feature until I buy my own MacBook and personalize it with my own music collection...

Geez, I didn't mean to make you cry. I just wanted to say Floggin Molly sucks. Many of us posting have diverse music tastes, so Genius won't provide a perfect playlist, but give Genius a try before you knock it. It's still new, so there'll be bugs. Remember it'll never be perfect.

I tired to get it runing but its asking to sign up to itunes store, and i need a credit card.
whats the go with this? i guess i wont be using it.

I agree. I'm my own musical genius, and don't need some other wanna-be genius trying to tell me what I want to hear.
Hey guys, Genius is just a data mining tool, but a very interesting one at that.

Imagine that Genius would find some treasured song that you hadn't listed to in 3 years and had completely forgotten about. Those of us with huge music libraries have lots of these jewels strewn about in iTunes and it's a treat to hear something great again, as though you listened to it for the first time.

Use some imagination :)

I have a fifth generation iPod classic and a third generation iPod nano. It'd be nice to have the Genius feature on those, especially considering that Genius turned out to be a much better feature than I thought...

Can't say I'm impressed at first glance by genius playlists. So far mine has listed some awful dance track EP as the "top album" when I select a track by Rush. Because there is some other idiot who used the name "rush" back in 1999 its picked this but why its "top album" is a mystery because its not been reviewed (apart from the 1 star I just gave it for annoying me}.

Also it lists "missing" tracks that I already have because there is a "the" missing from the title or it suggests albums and tracks I already have for purchase.

I'll give it a while but can't see me using it if it transcends genres for a start.

Yeah I've had similar problems.

iTunes needs a way of letting us mark one of our songs as the same as a song sold by Apple. This would have 4 advantages
1) We could update our song information from Apple data
2) We could get cover art from Apple.
3) We could identify songs better for Genius
4) Apple could try to up-sell us (eg: get Video clips of our songs for $1)

competly agreed, currently i just drag the 30 sec clip fdrom the iTunes store and macth the tags manually. its a pain in the ass, but it makes my librarry so much cleaner...... if iTunes did this for me it would save me alot of time when i get music from...... *caugh* cds.... when im not connected to the internet.... *caugh*

also im very pissed that my 1st gen classic isent going to get genius. i dont have enough money for a new classic, even if i do get 40 more gigs. and im addicted to genius!

I added my feedback "feature request" on the feedback page.

Yes!

No problem here, virtually none of my music is recognised by Genius as I've only ever bought a handful of albums from iTunes.

This is ridiculous. As far as I am aware, the only difference between the previous iPod Classic and the new one is the hard drive capacity - surely they would run the same software version?

Unless there is a serious technological reason as to why they cannot impliment this (I cannot think of one) then this is plain cheap on Apple's part.

So buying an iPod from last week means you can't use the latest features, even though the new version is virtually identical and can.

Genius is one of the best things out there from Apple recently - I love the addition on my iPhone - but getting people to update their hardware for no apparent reason like this is just cheap. I understand why it is not possible to implement on the iPod shuffle. I even see how it may not be viable to update the software on older nanos (as the OS is completely different)... but on the iPod Classic with identical OS - come on Apple...

This sets an alarming precedent...

I agree with your sentiment, but it's not really a precedent. They did the same thing to the 5G iPod which did not get the search feature of the 5.5G.
