iPod

So what defines an iPod classic? I bought an iPod before they came out with the iPods with the 80 & 160 GB sizes. Is that an iPod classic? I hope it is because I would really like genius on my iPod.

You are misunderstanding what Genius does.

Pick a song you like. Click on genius. And it will create a playlist of similar music from your music library. So, you should like all the songs. And it gives you a good way to rediscover music you own.

(note, on itunes it also recommends new songs to buy, but that's not the main feature)

Hi,

The only thing the Genius does for me is recommend music that I can buy from the iTunes Store. I have 35 GB of music and there is nothing that matches with a song I choose?

And why is the album cover art not showing up from the CD's I ripped onto my computer?

Click on a track, then click the Genius button at the bottom right of the window; that will generate a playlist of songs similar to the highlighted one. The sidebar will only show iTMS songs because it's basically a giant ad heh.

Am I the only one not terribly excited about this Genius feature?

When I listen to bands, I listen to one or two great bands of one genre and all the similiar ones aren't really interesting to me.

For example, Flogging Molly. I love Flogging Molly, but I never cared too much for Dropkick Murphys. I can think of examples like this for several other specific genres as well. One or two bands catch my interest but the rest that are pretty much the same aren't too enjoyable to me.

Regardless of that, the Genius feature still isn't too exciting...

Try changing the type of music you listen to and you might enjoy Genius a little more.

After downloading and using Genius, I have no complaints.

iPod Classic is the last gen of iPods, when they came out with 80GB and 160GB. They're video with the split design menus. Before that, it's called iPod 5G or something like that. They've got almost the same functionality but not quite, and hence, they are not iPod Classic. :(

Hi,

I'll give it a try. Thanks!

I don't get this "reduction" talk; the iPod Classic 160 GB has been discontinued altogether and the 80 GB model has been bumped up to 120. If they were to discontinue the iMac 24", you wouldn't be referring to the iMac 20" as "the new, much smaller 24" iMac", right?

According to Steve almost nobody wanted the 160 GB brick, the vast majority went for the thinner 80 GB model. So they scrapped the brick and increased the capacity by 50% on the 80 GB without making it thicker. The Classic is a bit of a niche (and legacy) product these days. Apple is a business and their objective isn't to be nice, but to make money, and if a product is selling very poorly they'll scrap it. Simple as that.

Ok it's not a reduction but if I go out and try to buy an new iPod next month, unless I find a refurbished one or find one still in stock somewhere, there will be no way in hell to get one that is as large in capacity as the one that I have owned for one year. If I purchase a classic, it will be 40GB smaller than the classic I now own. I will have to REDUCE my collection of music to fit in the new and improved iPod Classic.

Oh and Steve also said the new iPhone was twice as fast as the first!

User Interface

Why don't they include the new user interface featured on the new nanos on the new iPod Classics? The old interface is vastly inferior to the new one. Because the Classic still has the old UI, I have no intention of buying one.

genius - blech

genius would've been a nice feature years ago, before i imported my music library and made genre playlists of the entire thing anyway

a really nice feature to update the ipod classic with would be an always working click-wheel - i would send it back for repairs were it not for my desire to not be without music for up to 2 weeks until i get a replacement, and that i already installed an invisible shield

FIX the clickwheel already!!!

genius

It works realy well for rock and roll. So so for rap and hip hop, and sucks for reggae and reggaeton. Not too good for techno or electronic either. It will be better over time, but for right now it's kinda beta still

I am still so upet that they actually decreased the capacity of a product for the very first time. The iPod classic!!!

They just discontinued a model that likely wasn't selling. And this isn't the first time they've decreased capacity, they did that when they went from the mini to the nano.

And back then people kicked and screamed and whined about it...

...and the new model went on to be apple's best selling iPod ever.

If people here complain about a new model from apple, it's probably guaranteed to be a hit.

More on topic, I'm looking forward to a nano firmware update, that would be great.

Ipod Classic Genius

So im really looking forward to the genius and the 80gb classic. I mostly use my ipod for the car and in fact i dont even remember when i used headphones for it.

Never the less when i used genius for itunes i loved it and thought it would be great for the road and now it looks like it will be

so yay for that software update

LOL another person who must work for Apple PR

Highest capacity iPod before announcement: 160GB
Highest capactiy iPod after announcement: 120GB

The highest capacity iPod was inarguably reduced by 40GB to 120GB.

If the 160GB model had been more stable they would have sold more.

Good point.

If sales of the 160GB iPod were lower than the 80GB I'm sure it has very little to do with the thickness of the device. I suspect it has more to do with price, size of the average music library (only a minority use Apple Lossless, or have massive AAC/MP3 libraries). As you say, the poor publicity of the Classic when it first launched didn't help either - I remember reading lots of people on forums saying things like 'I think I'll give the Classic a miss after reading about all these problems'. The Classic is the first iPod I owned that had such serious bugs and compatibility issues. It didn't work properly with my car kit for about 5 months before an update fixed the issues - and popular products like Bose speakers had exactly the same issues as I was having with my car kit. I suspect that REDUCING the capacity (yes, going from a 160GB iPod Classic as the maximum capacity, to a 120GB iPod Classic is REDUCING the capacity...) may also be something to do with Apple wanting to phase out hard drives in iPods - making it a capacity that's going to be a little easier to match with the iPod Touch (had they bumped the classic to 200GB, or even kept the 160GB then the gap would be maintained). Presumably the next Touches will have 64GB, which will be a strong competitor for the Classic.

If Apple are going to restrict the capacity of iPods, it would be nice if they would provide some easier method of managing libraries for devices with limited capacity. My library is largely in Apple Lossless, and I have to convert my favourite music to AAC to put on my iPhone (which means I can fit a bit of music on it, rather than hardly anything...). But having AAC and Lossless of the same songs is quite annoying. I gather iTunes compresses songs on the fly for the Shuffle - it would be a nice feature for other iPods (obviously too time consuming to compress on the fly - but some equally user friendly feature, perhaps hiding or 'stacking' the compressed versions so that each song had only one reference in the library).

When I was listening to Metallicas new Album, "Death Magnetic", the genius reccomended I listen to and was missing out on Jessica Simpson music. I know that Metallica went "pop-py" in the 90's with their music but to link Metallica with Jessica Simpson?

Oh come on Apple!!!!

Regarding the 160 GB reduction to 120 GB, I strongly suspect that there's a 240 GB model that's going to be coming out very soon. The 240 GB toshiba drives weren't officially announced yet iirc, so Jobs wouldn't steal toshiba's thunder in the same way he loathes it when someone else does it to him. Now that the 240 GB drive are official, Jobs will announce a 240 GB iPod in a couple of weeks. Because it makes almost no sense to eliminate the larger iPod. It costs Apple virtually nothing to keep selling that extra model since they have another model they're still selling which uses 99% the same parts and design.

There will almost definitely be a 240 GB classic coming very shortly.

They need to revamp the visuals of the Classic's menus. I hate that split view and skewed album art. I just ordered a Classic after the new Touch basically had squat to offer over the last model, and now I"m wishing I would have got ripped off buying a 5.5G Video.

I would have to agree with the Genius assessment of post-80s Metallica.

Yes but with the replacement of the mini those who really wanted additional capacity could still buy a full sized iPod. This is the first time the maximum capacity of the iPod range has been reduced.

I hope so, I would definitely buy one.

It's wishful thinking to hope Apple would issue updates for the 5th gen iPod but meh, here's to hoping!
