People like him are very valuable to companies actually. I don't see how he's misguided. He makes products better for people. If Apple wanted they could even hire him to find the holes before anyone else so they could patch them. But he'd rather have a phone that he can use. :D
I assume he's stated that already then, but you never know - money always talks in the end! :D
He is ace though. The first iteration of Blackra1n didn't work on my 3G, after trying everything(restoring like new, etc), but the RC2 version, worked perfectly, first time out, and I have my glorious SBSettings back!

I was waiting for the Dev Team to get their ass in gear, but I'd still be waiting, if it wasn't gor GeoHotz!

Anyone recall how long the previous unlock PoC's took to become a working product made available to everyone?

I can't wait, using this Vodafone-supplied HTC Magic I got with my new contract is killing me, just want to slip that SIM in my iPhone and be done with it. :)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

Another milestone for George! Congrats to the wunderkind!!

my question is... what happened to dev blog? or dev team, or whatever they were called?
i clearly remember you guys all saying noo dont trust geohot wait for Dev-team they are the best. blah blah... now looky looky!

I think the Dev-Team does a lot more testing that geohot does to make sure everything works alright, whereas geohot will just release it ASAP.

Yeah, Geohot does it quick and hacky; Dev-Team does it slow and right. In fact, most of the Dev-Team hasn't even been working on a baseband-specific unlock; they're working on updating redsn0w and finding an exploit in the bootloader to create a generic unlock. For those who've been waiting for an unlock, though, this is wonderful news, and you have to give him credit.

 Got a link or anything for that? I'm not trying to be an ******, I just want to read about it.

On the demonstration video it says 11/4/09, so on Wednesday he is planning to release.
On geohot's Twitter, he said a few times that he was done working on the iPhone. Then he released Blackra1n, after that someone asked him if there was going to be a Blacksn0w, to match Purplera1n and Purplesn0w, to which he replied "No". I guess working on the iPhone is addicting.:D

That's long been their goal. Musclenerd (I think) said recently that the ultimate goal was something like BootNeuter for the 3G/S. Angie and Confucious (moderators in the comments at blog.iphone-dev.org) have both said that they decided a while ago to only try to unlock every-other baseband, so that they could focus their efforts on the bootloader hack (though Musclenerd has been looking on his own). I don't have time to go through all the comments there again (they number in the thousands), but if you hang around there long enough you'll get a sense of where the Dev Team is headed.

Pretty much. I have my 1st Gen, and the feeling of knowing that no matter what Apple throws at it (software or baseband updates) I can still unlock at any point; even if I updated to the latest and back to stock.

BootNeuter is the ultimate hack. That's how the Dev Team operates, find the ultimate thing and get the cat in his own game.

Geohot is fine and all, but he does stuff in the short run and not thinking in the long run. That's good for when new updates come around, but bad since, you are always playing catch-up with the cat.

would you need to jailbreak with blackra1n in order to use blacksn0w?

I have a feeling blacksn0w is going to be available thru Cydia regardless of method of jailbreaking.

I hope so, but it looks like the patch was being applied from his computer, not from the phone itself. That doesn't mean the finished product will be, but we will have to wait and see.

About 10 degrees...

Thank you, I will be here all night. Don't forget to tip your waitress.
i c wut u did thar......

Also... that's not true. Anyone can learn to be really good at a task. Genius, in my mind, is a level of understanding beyond just learning. I'm sure if you spent the amount of time he has on trying to hack the iPhone you'd be nowhere.

He's not misguided at all....I mean if he was misguided he would be running around burning houses. haha

Genius is dictated a person's IQ. Geohot has an incredible aptitude for code. I commend his efforts and don't think misguided is appropriate. He has a talent and at 19 he found a way to express that talent.
