I like the 'MacPod' name. However with a name like that it will have to be more functional than just for just viewing video and playing music. Then you're talking about a PDA like device which is cool as I would be more likely to buy one. Steve Jobs doesn't like em' but he also said no to a video iPod last year...

One way to help with the scratch and fingerprints issue is to go with a textured screen or matte finish. A lot of people like the glossy look but it will be terrible for fingerprints.
I agree and said just as much earlier in the other topic on the touch screen iPod, which I said could be called a MacPod if it were more PDA like.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/179531/, (post #61)

I still am not sure this will have a PDA like set of capabilities though, (see previous post for more).

Ok, maybe I'm missing something. Are multi-touch controllers everywhere already?
Addendum: There's some more details about the Apple patents here:
http://hrmpf.com/wordpress/48/new-apple-patents/

Have a look at the Lemur, though - despite what Texasmafia implied about being able to pick one up at your local XYZ, this is the only shipping multi-touch screen technology around, and it's just over an inch thick. Have a look at the small print of the (admittedly amazing) Jeff Han device in the video above and you'll see it requires a rear projector - ruling it out for a portable tablet.

Whoever said you'd get the iPod with a touchscreen, and then 2 months later it's big brother should be given a medal. that's the best idea that I've seen in a long time. I would love a tablet for EVERYTHING that I do that doesn't require typing. that's the issue that I have now....typing. Everything is so keyboard oriented, how do you change it to a tablet oriented device, and if you put a keyboard on the screen, how is typign without the tactile feedback?

Also, part of the reason that the iPod worked, IMO, is because it was a new product. a macTablet, or an iTablet, is simply an apple version of a failed product. For apple to successfully market the tablet, Jobs and co. will need to find a new name for it.
Compare to the iPod. All mp3 players sucked in 2001, and an apple iMp3 MP3 player would scream MP3 player. it would also scream sucky.
For apple to get a tablet to work, they need to rename it as a "new" product, w/o and bad conotations.

Anyone want to play connect the rumors
1. Big announcement not ready for SF
2. Large Screen something
3. Patent with 'camera' embedded in screen
4. Pro apps (aperature/final cut) (did anyone notice the nice light table effects in video
5. Gesture

This leads me to the idea of a new approach for interactive professional applications. Just stand over the screen and let your fingers do the talking. Who needs a keyboard. Now as the the original rumors for the 40-50 monitor suggested think bigger. Now this would rock and cement Apples place in any design/production studio.

Interesting. This could open up a whole new can of "Think Different" whipass.

there are definitely a few times in the video where you can clearly see a VERY Mac OS X Dock-like menu across the top being used. also noticed that this "dock" appears to display white text beneath each item and what looks like the familiar black triangle, just like OS X. i'd really like to know what OS that is. a lot of those graphics look much like OS X's Core Image effects and the Flurry screensaver. i can't imagine that is anything Windows-based. very interesting.
It certainly reminds you of the dock, each icon seemingly switching to a different map in that part of the video. It doesn't appear at any other time though, so perhaps that menu was app specific and not system-wide.

Quite frankly, the whole video freaked me out to an extent. It felt like I was watching a sci-fi movie, but it wasn't a movie. If this technology just appeared, I would be gobsmacked and much prefer slow and gradual change. There have been no major signs of this technology as of yet, so if it were close to available, I would be partly worried about what other items companies were developing.

That video is wicked. Who else picked up on the "dock" at the top of the screen.

I think most people noticed that, but it didn't really behave much like the Dock we all know. I didn't see floating labels and the user pressed one of the icons (presumably) and something seemed to hover there just next to the dock in the video. Also, it appeared out of nowhere but not with that slide out of the edge of the screen we all recognize. Sure, it looks like the Dock but with some markedly different behavior.

Could it be a version of the Dock in development to work with this technology? Who knows? Interesting mystery.

And so, the iPod fulfills it's rightful place as Star Trek's PADD. :p
I really feel like I'm shouting into the void here, but nonetheless I continue the search for a decent video of the Lemur in order to demonstrate that you can actually buy this technology today in tablet sized-dimensions. How on earth, though, will Apple keep the price down (this thing is c.€2200)?

Here's a start, video-wise:

Hey i've been thinking about that recently patented accelerometer (sp?). And i was wondering how the ipod controls would appear. Presumably, if the iPAD (or whatever the name is) is orientated vertically, and you touch the screen , you would get controls in that orientation. Similarly, if it is on the horizontal axis, like when you were watching i movie, the controls would appear north, south, east, west IN THAT ORIENTATION. From what i read about the accelerometer, this seems like the right gadget to tell which way you're holding the iPAD! Does that make any sense at all? Just trying to piece together variouos snippets of info here.

Oh yah, another idea I sent Apple a couple of months ago.

Make a Bluetooth ear and mouth piece for Macs that could be taken out and used as a mouse.

And head gestures would be used to work the mouse when its IN YOUR EAR !!!

Those are fantastic mockups of the ipod! The artist went for simplicity and esthetics and it looks great! We will be lucky to get something that looks like that.

...and don't forget about Steve's reference at SF to 1st April, Apple's 30th Anniversary and "we haven't figured out what we will do yet". Perhaps Easter eggs all round?

I can think of so many ways that Apple could use this technology beside the obvious Video iPod/PDA or Tablet type devices. Perhaps the previously rumoured remote with a screen. Or a tablet device that behaves as a computer on its own and also a controller when you're on the couch watching your 50" Plasma Apple TV/Computer...I can only dream.

This thing has been named a bunch of different things. I know it won't even mention tablet with how much SJ has ponted out the failure of the Tablet PC.

I'm personally leaning towards MacPAD, because it will use the Mac OS and although we want to stay away from the word tablet, we want to elude to that type of functionality. It's just that Apple will add much more functionality and make it much easier to use.

Also, I like MacPAD because it also incorporates PDA into the name, without calling it one.

"What do you call the best PDA and the best Tablet computer? Neither a PDA nor a Tablet. Introducing MacPAD."

QUICK!!! Someone call SJ and Chiat/Day! Tell them to get to work on this advertising campaign PRONTO!!!.

Lets piece all this past technology and future technology together and this is what we can link and understand from it all:

1. Resolution Independence (RI) that is in some form implemented in 10.4 and future 10.X releases. which will allow any application or desktop to be shrunk in real-time.

2. Apple included a feature in 10.2(3) that is called "minimize-in-place" which will shrink windows onto the desktop the size of a postage stamp, rather then the minimized window to reside in the dock. Looks very much like what is happening to the application shell demonstrated in the video.

3. Apple implements dual finger page scrolling into the touch-pad, allow for a very early multi-point finger input recognition for on-screen application and actions.

4. Allowing the GPU to act as a co-processor for the rendering of on-screen graphics.

5. Apple is rumoured to release a 40"+ Plasma iMac, however Plasma has its downsides. However if this experiment has anything to prove it suggest that a projected image on screen with a camera to track finger(s) input to calculate the output processes.

There is more, however it seems to be a on a great start.

My conclusion is, I am going to wait on this as many in the industry have stated that Mac OS X is not revolution, however more along the lines of an evolution. Reason being that we have been using a keyboard, mouse, tablet, mic, or camera to input information with only one single put process at a time. Example, I cannot type on a keyboard in Text.app and also input text via speech in Mail.app. Limited to the multi-tasker. ;) :)

This technology seems promising and Apple wants to lead the way in a revolution, by getting rid of keyboard, mouse, tablet, mic, camera and just focusing on a HUGH DISPLAY WITH MULTI-INPUT CAPABILITIES.

We will soon all have Macintosh that mimic the movie Minority Report, sweet. :D

Mac OS X 10.5 LEOPARD has been leaked! :p

Who knows maybe the Menu Bar and Dock are merged for this little project. ;) :)

Think of expose, widgets.....however for applications, images, maps, desktops, and OSes.

This application is great for military purposes as well. :)
