Just we need .... a touchscreen display. Can you imagine how scratched up that thing will be after two days!

I can't even watch the video. What browser did you guys use? I have tried Safari and Firefox.

Try this link: http://mrl.nyu.edu.nyud.net:8090/~jhan/ftirtouch/multitouchreel.mpg

Also, be sure to check out the rest of Jeff Han's work: http://mrl.nyu.edu/~jhan/ I think that, from the look of Jeff's site, he is a Mac user or maybe just likes the old OS9 stuff because he has a few icons on his site that resemble such. That might explian for the Mac OS look to his work that a few others commented on.

I like the 'MacPod' name. However with a name like that it will have to be more functional than just for just viewing video and playing music.
Possibly - but I think when they say they want to have the word "Mac" in all their products (eg MacBook Pro) they may be in some ways separating the iPod and Mac lines? Certainly as you say if the word "Mac" is in it it'd want some computer functionality!

I predict this: The iPod is released.. Touchscreen is the whole front of the iPod. Basically what everyone thinks already. Then maybe a month or two later, Apple releases the Tablet Mac.
Interesting - 2 similar tablets, one simpler iPod based (iPod size?). One Mac based (12" size?). Very cool.

Hey i've been thinking about that recently patented accelerometer (sp?). And i was wondering how the ipod controls would appear. Presumably, if the iPAD (or whatever the name is)
Firstly.. I have to say iPad is an interesting name for this. It's ideal if it's really a pad style device (not so great if it's marketed for video). We've heard mainly about audio/video, especially the mention of touch screen for virtual click-wheel (controlling playback) and using gestures - but I assume that stylus/handwriting would be an integral side-effect.

I'm personally leaning towards MacPAD, because it will use the Mac OS and although we want to stay away from the word tablet, we want to elude to that type of functionality.
Back to 2 versions idea of rainmanbk, the iPod and Mac based systems could be iPad and MacPad.

Hey one last thought - the accelerometer can sense movements. You could potentially watch a Quicktime VR - and to see 360' you could simply turn yourself (with the iPad) around to see different sides of the view. Similarly, you could work on a virtual screen a couple of feet across and by just moving the iPad see different parts of that screen (it'd want to be light!)

Big Brother?

I think both iPods and Mac tablets would be great uses of this technology. In fact, if they're not one product, I predict this:

The iPod is released.. Touchscreen is the whole front of the iPod. Basically what everyone thinks already.

Then maybe a month or two later, Apple releases the Tablet Mac.

The homepage simply reads "Introducing big brother..."

I realize Mr. Jobs has a penchant for contradicting himself (to the delight of many), but wouldn't that be the ultimate irony in Apple's marketing history when you consider the beginnings of the Macintosh? As I recall, Mr. Jobs said something to the effect of "...was George Orwell right about 1984?..." at the product's introduction.

top dock is worrying

I believe Windows Vista has a dock similar but slightly different to X's and it is positioned at the top. :(

Thanks for that link zim!

What I feel the MacPAD will look like, is on that page! Combine it with the multi-touch technologies also displayed on that page and BAM!... MacPAD!!!

To see the form factor that I'm talking about, go towards the bottom of that page and check out:
"The Animated Napkin Sketch"

I think the size will end up being a more familiar 8"x10" viewable [for photos] or 8.5"x11" viewable [for full page size].

Do you really think Apple is stupid enough to not address such an obvious issue?

Anybody ever notice their iBook or Power book track pad or side of their mouse (right thumb side), Notice how it gets "buffed"

How is that going to look on you screen even if it gets buffed clear, the rest of the surface won't look the same... Just wondering if you agree?

I can just see Creative, Sony and Toshiba all craping their pants if this gets introduced. It seems the best compition is the The Toshiba Gigabeat S Series which will become a clunky POS when this comes out. Oh and if a media center comes out I will be in heaven!

I <3 Apple

ROFL. LMAO. They will crap in their pants, literally.

This is undoubdetly some of the most monumental work Apple has done.

If, in fact, Apple's been the one doing it.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them heading the project, though i also wouldn't be surprised if this was all just coincedence that we hungry macrumorers are brewing up.

If this was going down, and near the release of Vista, it would put a serious damper on its release hype. Imagine:

"Did you hear about OSX 10.5? It's so intuitive, it's mouseless."

"What? Oh, right. Well so what? Vista's gonna support dual processors!"

Heh.

I could care less about a handheld

I really don’t care if Apple comes out with a tablet-type device or a new iPod. The potential I see when I watch the multi-touch interface video is for the editing of media. Being a designer I would love to use a large multi-touch screen for Photoshop, Illustrator, Final Cut, After Effects, Logic, etc. If this could be packaged into a 40-inch screen that sat at an angle, much like a drafting desk, I could work with design more naturally. Of course, it would take forever for Adobe to catch up after the interface was introduced. I’ve thought for years that it would be great if your desktop was your desktop. This could reduce back, arm, and wrist problems brought on my excessive mouse and keyboard use. Plus you would be editing content much like designers did before computers.

My vision

I see this technology used in the following manner:

The laptop, while closed, looks exactly like the 15.4 inch macbook, although thinner.

However, when you open this thing up, BOTH SIDES of the computer is the screen, meaning there's no keyboard or anything. OLED technology allows for flexible displays, so this can happen. You can open up the screen to have a gorgeous 20"+ widescreen display laptop to be used for the gesture user interface, of it can be closed half way like a "regular" laptop, with the botton side of the screen turning into a visual keyboard and mouse.

If they really want to go crazy, they can allow a tablet "flip" option to have a very portable table-like laptop with the gesture interface.

This can be really amazing. I can just see myself going thorugh my digital book library in PDF with with this gesture user interface (BTW, isn't it cool that it still remains GUI as initials? :) ). Delicious library can be so cool for this type of thing.

Oh, one more thing: Is it just me, or does this video of sorting through pictures looks amazingly like Apeture? check out the "light table" feature on Apple site's video compared to the feature we see in this demo video. It looks like its exactly the same. How cool will it be for photographers to actually have an LCD light table that they can sort through using the Gesture User Interface?

Oded S.

The video sure is amazing. I watched it over and over. I also thought about the recent apple patents such as these little cameras integrated into the screen surface. This would solve the mentionen problem with rear projection taking toomuch space. Your hands would be "seen" by the screen itself so there would be no need for an aditionnal camera.

Remember what Steve said about the iMac in MWSF06? "Hey, where did the computer go?" quoting consumers. I'd like to hear some "where did mouse and keyboard go?" when something like the iTouch (iMac with touchscreen) comes out. :D This would free out even more space on our desks.

Honestly, I don't think we will have that technology in handheld devices as soon as April 1st. We were promised something "much cooler" that wasn't readly for MWSF but I doubt it will be such a big thing. iPod with full screen sounds reasonable though, but with more conventional (and affordable) input methods (i.e. iPod remote).

On the other hand, apple has always been good for surprises. Let's just wait for the next Keynote. Only one and a half month. Be strong, folks. :)

PS: The next iPod will be huge - an eight pounder with a 10" screen"
sound like a tablet to me :D

And if Mr. Jobs' Podcast was right...

That was the thoght that came to my mind. Maybe we where all watching Mr. Jobs at MWSF 06 doing a Podcast demo and in fact saw a cristal ball: "The next iPod will be huge" and "iPods every where" (with an iPod-toaster).
