Nice to see Apple are venturing into touch screen technology, it's the kind of thing you see in films (movies, whatever you call them :) ) and just think "that would be soooo cool!". I understand that many other companies have experimented with it but I was sceptical about the technology until I read the other news about the scratch-resistance. What I really want however is this gesture tech in the notebooks.

I can't even watch the video. What browser did you guys use? I have tried Safari and Firefox.

works in safari for me.

This whole thing has me thinking of an Apple Tablet with capabilities vaguely reminiscent of the big-screen computers in Minority Report...

I always wanted one of those computers, looks like Apple is going to give me one! Watching that video made me so excited and ecstatic (and other big words that can be vaguely defined as "extreme happiness coupled with anticipation") that for a moment I forgot about my coming MBP.

When this comes out it is simple what I will do.
I will die.

I think both iPods and Mac tablets would be great uses of this technology. In fact, if they're not one product, I predict this:

The iPod is released.. Touchscreen is the whole front of the iPod. Basically what everyone thinks already.

Then maybe a month or two later, Apple releases the Tablet Mac.

The homepage simply reads "Introducing big brother..."

And then obviously underneath is the iPod Touchscreen and next to it, in exact proportions, is the Mac Tablet. I thought of this because it's kinda what they did with the iMac/iPod deal. And it makes sense to make both a very portable iPod version, but also a Tablet of some sorts that would function as more of a computer.

Dunno. My 2 cents.

well,
IT'S ABOUT F%$&NG TIME
Seriously,
I LOVE the iPod>Tablet Touch
and we have all been waiting awhile

I don't know a whole lot about this part of the market, but maybe it'll be a sort of Blackberry-killer, along with PDA and iPod functionality?

Obviously, though, the technology can be used for crazy cool things, as the video shows, things more suited to a desktop environment.

That video is wicked. Who else picked up on the "dock" at the top of the screen. Also, the gestures in the video are well described in the patent pictures. Coincidence? I think I'll buy a few more shares of AAPL while the price is down. :D

I thought of Minority Report, too. I thought the coolest part of the video was when the user was shuffling photos around and resizing and rotating them. It just seemed so natural, like laying out a collage on a table! The slingshot game on there reminds me of the Nintendo DS. I love the games that utilize the touch screen in creative ways.

That video has me lusting for this technology. Come on Apple!

That was the coolest thing I've seen in a very, very long time. There's many imes I'm working and I get the urge to just use my fingers and hands to move things around because it'd just be so much faster and more precise than using the mouse or track pad. That's much of the reason I want an apple tablet, to ditch the need fr other input devices. If you can get the level of response shown in that vid, why would you need another input device unless there's a level of complexity and precision (or you're a game weenie) that you can't get from simply drawing or manipulating objects on a screen.

The video is definately cool but we'll just have to wait and see if this really has any connection to Apple.

I hope so!

I send in product suggestion to Apple all the time.

The agreement for the suggestion box says that they become Apple patentable ideas when you SUBMIT !!!

A couple of days ago I told Apple that they should make their tablet's with two graphic layers on the front screen ...

1. One for the interface or apps as it is now.

2. One that is beneath that layer which mirrors the fingers, animated fingers, that are on the back of the device where touch pads would be.

This way to the user it appears that he is looking through the device and seeing his fingers on the other side.

This way the finger movement can be magnified so the hands don't have to be moved, and you don't get any finger prints on the screen.

Of course it could still be a touch-screen the interface is just more robust this way. :p ;) :D

Anyone want to play connect the rumors
1. Big announcement not ready for SF
2. Large Screen something
3. Patent with 'camera' embedded in screen
4. Pro apps (aperature/final cut) (did anyone notice the nice light table effects in video
5. Gesture

This leads me to the idea of a new approach for interactive professional applications. Just stand over the screen and let your fingers do the talking. Who needs a keyboard. Now as the the original rumors for the 40-50 monitor suggested think bigger. Now this would rock and cement Apples place in any design/production studio.

"Gesture Technology"

Tell me if I'm off base, but to me the potential problem of fingerprints on the screen that has been pointed out dozens of times by now is something so patently obvious that Apple had to have taken it into consideration from the beginning. In this vein, could the "touch" interface have very little to do with touching after all?

I know early tablet PCs would allow a person to control the mouse (with the stylus) just by moving over the surface of the screen without actually touching it. Could Apple implement an advanced version of this, where a person's thumb just has to be close enough to the screen to control the click-wheel without actually touching the screen?

It seems to fit with the description of "gesture" to me.

I'd seen that video before, or maybe a slightly shorter version - but I hadn't noticed the timescale. Looks like it's set in 2010? I recon someone at Apple has been waiting for 25 years to see their project realised...

This is pretty cool -- it's expensive though (c.€2200)

Slightly curious as to why no one has remarked on this, but I'll take the opportunity of quoting myself if only to ask, how do patents work on these technologies? Compare the above (actual, released) product with the hilarious drawings posted from the Apple patents. What's different, or so distinct about the Apple technology that hasn't already been patented by someone else, especially by the inventor/manufacturer of the control surface I just linked to?

There is a big difference in making a cool looking control pad with a screen instead of buttons and a computer that you can fully interact with via touchscreen. Touch screen controls have been around for quite a while now. You can go down to Best Buy and pick up one for your TV, and just about every other object in your house.

Ok, maybe I'm missing something. Are multi-touch controllers everywhere already?

Touchscreens do work that way but its too hard to maintain the distance.

There are keyboards that function only through lasers, detecting finger locations and projecting the keyboard image.

Animated fingers would just be so flexible the touch pad could be anywhere, on the back of the screen or wireless and just as intuitive as touching accept that you could see what was under your finger.

Accellerometer use

Hey i've been thinking about that recently patented accelerometer (sp?). And i was wondering how the ipod controls would appear. Presumably, if the iPAD (or whatever the name is) is orientated vertically, and you touch the screen , you would get controls in that orientation. Similarly, if it is on the horizontal axis, like when you were watching i movie, the controls would appear north, south, east, west IN THAT ORIENTATION. From what i read about the accelerometer, this seems like the right gadget to tell which way you're holding the iPAD! Does that make any sense at all? Just trying to piece together variouos snippets of info here.
