As for the MRI and sleeping....I had a head one just recently and damned if I could go to sleep,that banging messed me right up and I fell over after getting of the scan bed.....{no contrast}
Just curious - Do the scanners you guys use have the horrible enclosed head piece?....on TV it appears some are more like CT scanners.
Yes, as far as I know, you always have to have the "head piece" because it contains the coils (containing conductive wire to create a magnetic field) which are needed to focus and produce the image. (or something to that effect) If you get an MRI elsewhere on your body you get the coils placed on that region as well.
TV isn't always so detail oriented, what with it not being truly for diagnostic purposes and all.
