Last year, I upgraded to the 12 Pro Max from the Galaxy S10 Plus, which was my first plus size smartphone. This year, I upgraded to the 13 Pro Max.
Though it's all a matter of personal preference when it comes to size and weight versus performance and utility, I get that everyone can choose what works best for you and should be able to without any judgment either way.
However, if you are unable to get over the immutable characteristics of size, weight and "feel" of the Pro Max and not willing to try it over at least a few weeks, then buy the smaller iPhone 13 models and not make it a big deal why you don't like the plus size smartphone.
Granted, this year, Apple made the only distinction between the two 13 Pro models the battery and screen size. However, last year, the 12 Pro Max received the best camera hardware in addition to the screen size and battery size. The larger battery and increased efficiency of the processor extends the speed and performance gains over the regular Pro model and even the 12 Pro Max.
The increased screen real estate also accentuates the perceived and actual notch size reduction thus marginally contributing to a better overall experience IMHO. It also makes taking advantage of cinematic video mode and the overall photo and video experience that much more enjoyable. I don't have to pack a tablet when I travel to enjoy the benefits of increased screen and battery size.
