the thing is as a consumer i alway felt confident in apple because they provided top end products for the pros. so if i want to buy a new mac the worst thing that could happen was that i have to pay more money and get a pro product if the consumer line doesn't satisfy my needs.
now without the support for pros as a consumer i might end up in a situation where i might not get what i want regardless of price. for example if i wanted a matte screen before october i could buy a MBP for $2000 instead of a glossy MB for $1300. expensive but i get what's important to me because the pro's need it. now that's not possible anymore. and in 3 years they might not have FW anymore at all. maybe no optical drive at all anymore. maybe no pro quality movie making software (remember how they ditched imovie HD. at least you can buy FCE right now. but in a few years that might be gone).
so for a consumer the pro's are a garantee for stability and quality. that's what is worrying me.
And you know what? I completely agree with you.
I think all these total cutbacks on ports, options and abilities is really nerve racking to think that prices are still the same if not a tad higher and were getting cut on essentials that we are familiar with and use day to day.
I mean its different from the CPU transition.
but now its more restrictive than that.
i like the products, they make unbeatable products; however they lack the substance and usability that we once had. (especially in the consumer line)
these might as well be expensive netbooks, considering lack of extra ports (fortunately there are fw400 to fw800 cables out there but still an inconvenience...considering the secrecy involved so noone can prep or get any info regarding this, some of the secrecy is okay and all but sometimes its a bit ridiculous) , and a "one-size-fits all" attitude (especially concerning the screen).
i mean they have alot of great potential to make a more variety line up like they originally intended when they were marking up for the Consumer Products and Pro Products.
I just hope they remember that there are quite a bit of high end dedicated users out there that still need to be looked out for.
