What a crap company. There systems will never be like CarPlay or Android auto. Look at their self driving and how it got shut down. What a stupid mistake.

At least be upfront about your reasoning, GM. Just come out and say it’s a money thing and to get more data out of your customers.
Babbitt claims that drivers will be less likely to pick up their phones with a built-in system that does not rely on a service like CarPlay, leading to improved safety on the road. GM does not have any data to prove that an infotainment system is less distracting than CarPlay, nor has it done any testing.

eliminating CarPlay will provide GM with more control over driver data, and it will allow GM to offer subscription services and apps that allow for purchases of food, gas, and other sundries.

Is this not just going to be “Android Automotive” (which is different from Android Auto…because reasons)? That’s what I had read previously. But I haven’t heard anything about Android Automotive lately, so maybe they nixed the name (too close to their other offering IMHO)? Or killed the project entirely?

And as for keeping their drivers safer, I can’t WAIT for, “You’re drifting into another lane. I can tell you which one for the low price of $99.99 a month, with several other bundles and options available, including…” as you’re trying to drive.

If safety is their concern, they should support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Their own Android Auto system is so slow and clunky that it's much more of a safety hazard than phone-based systems will every be.

While I think most of GMs reasoning is absolute garbage... I will say I hate that Apple locks you out of the keypad while you're in a call and the car is moving. This forces you to pull your phone out and dial numbers on the phone itself if you're trying to navigate an IVR.

I appreciate when companies simplify my purchasing options. Within a year I’ll have to replace my car. All GM options won’t need to be considered. Thanks GM! [Saying this as a current owner of a GM vehicle. Not by choice, it was a hand-me-down.]

I need to find a way to frame every poster on macrumors giving me 10 dollars as a safety feature.

I literally cancelled an order for an 2024 EV Equinox because of this. Sales guy was not happy.
I hope you let him know that reason why. Let them take that back to their GM reps and pass the feedback up the chain. Canceled orders for new vehicles will be the one thing that might actually change their plan to discontinue CarPlay — after all, money talks.

Prior to the announcement earlier this year, I was hoping we’d finally get CarKey support from GM in a couple more years. This change is also upending my plans to replace my ICE in the next few years. I’m not sure what I’m going to do, but I won’t be buying any vehicle with Google spyware embedded, let alone no CarPlay.

Actually Tesla support with iPhones is fine. Preferable to CarPlay even. Not joking. The map (with satellite of course) is ahead of CarPlay, and Contacts/Messages/phone works the same.

Ever since Apple Music (and Podcasts coming any day now), the gap between Tesla and CarPlay is small. Unless you have a 3rd party CarPlay app that just rocks your world.
" The map (with satellite of course) is ahead of CarPlay," I use Google Maps with CarPlay and they have satellite view. Use it all the time.

Yeah but that means you're using Google Maps. Which not everyone is comfortable relying upon.

They already used Android Automotive for years, and spoiler alert, it had Carplay and Android Auto (not to be confused with Android Automotive, different systems of course) built in. And another spoiler, their ICE cars will have Carplay and Android Auto, nothing’s changed for them. They claim they will phase out ICE cars by 2035 though so Carplay and Android Auto should be done by then. Except they aren’t meeting EV sales goals already so…

(Android Automotive is an operating system, eg like iOS or MacOS, while Android Auto is a screen projection software for Android like Carplay).

But they claim for EVs they will have a modified version of Android Automotive called Ultifi. They say they are working with Google to build and improve the new system. The main claim to fame is the EV routing feature which is important in EVs, that said plenty of EVs have Carplay and it doesn’t detract from the experience. They just want to extract more revenue from drivers, because you’d be tempted to not pay subscription money if you just used your phone, and tons of EV drivers aren’t even going to use EV routing if they don’t go on long road trips and don’t need to efficiently route through fast chargers.

As for driver assistance and paywalling, that’s not going to happen, the safety systems are included and don’t need subscriptions, but Supercruise does after 3 years (Supercruise being GM’s version of Tesla’s Autopilot), and you pay extra for Supercruise in the first place.

Good luck to them! All I can say is that if you don’t give the customers what they want then they won’t buy your product. We’ll see how all this works out for them.

I think Mary Barra and Co. are lying again.

If true, Mary Barra and Co. think their customers are stupid enough to believe this.

IMHO it is about improving their monetization of media services and customer tracking.

Lying to and insulting customers is hardly the path to customer loyalty.

New GM is very much like old GM.

As others have no doubt pointed out, this decision can be summed up with one word: subscription.

Sell something once, make money once. Sell a subscription, make money every month.

Taking carplay away so I can use my phone in my hand won't make it more unsafe. GM you are full of it and our government better not bail them out ten years from now for GM poor business decision.

In other words, they couldn’t figure out how to make their system usable so they’re getting rid of it. In the process, they’re getting a rid of a lot of potential buyers, including me. I gave up on Toyota years ago when they insisted on keeping their disaster of an infotainment system. Maybe that’s changed by now. My wife’s Mini has a usable, if somewhat unintuitive system. Love the wireless CarPlay.

RIP GM. Most young people use iPhones and they all want CarPlay.

Out of touch brain-dead executives no vision of the future.

Has anybody ever used an OEM car operating system that doesn't totally suck? I haven't!
