I was starting to consider a Cadillac until this bone headed decision was made. How long will it take for rental car companies to avoid GM now too..?

One of the nice things about CarPlay and Android Auto is the updates you’ll get over the years, both to the OS and apps. GM’s solution’s functionality will almost certainly be stuck with whatever it does on day one. They’ll have no interest in doing anything after sales.

100% a lie.

I bet Google is paying them a bucketload of money to be the exclusive partner.
I bet it’s both! Google- er, Alphabet? Doesn’t seem to mind paying a lot of money for analytics and data. Considering how much it gives them in return.

Car makers can suck it. I will decide what I want to do in my car. My F150 I finally was able to disable it beeping at me all the time to watch the road when I am watching the road. Whoever thought all this driver irritation crap and eliminating good features like CarPlay was a good idea should be fired.

Whatever, guess the 1986 Chevy van I had 20 years ago is going to be the last GM product I had.

This is great news, I was on the fence on Ford vs GM for my next vehicle. They just reinforced my decision to buy Ford. Did the VP of marketing at Bud Light go over to GM?

Modern cars are forcing drivers to give up more and more control, this is just the latest example. But everyone has to have cars loaded with technology.

Charge higher prices, make everything “premium”, take away controls or lock them behind paywalls, that’s the modern car for ya.

Oh and of course making everything electric so they can have maximum control..
You were fine until you got to electric. There’s absolutely zero reason why electric by itself means more control, it’s just that it’s the newest platform so they’re using it to close all the gaps in legacy cars. If we were going in the other direction they’d be doing this with gas cars

In many ways evs actually make the barrier to entry to hacking on your car lower, you need a lot less massively bulky equipment or a large garage/workspace to do a lot of things you’d need that for on a gas car, and the control systems on both are long computerized anyway.

Car companies are just using a new platform as an excuse to “monetize” everything they can, it’s not because the cars are EVs - and they're trying the same thing to a lesser extent on extant gas cars too, lest you think they’ll fully leave the legacy platforms alone

(Also not everyone is doing it to the same extent, Ford is doing a lot better on being customer friendly on their EVs than GM is for ex)

Not a big deal. There are third-party radios that do CarPlay. When you buy a new car ask the dealer to swap out the factory radio for a CarPlay radio. If they will not do that, some other dealer will.

Or just buy a Honda or whatever.

You can put CarPlay in even a 1990s pickup truck if you want.

Just say that you have chosen Google and be done with it. Why spin a money decision as safety issue. We'd move on, but now we just mock you 🤣😂🥲😏

I think they deliberately want to tank their business. Customers expect car play in this day and age. Not even rental car companies will build out a fleet of GM vehicles.

B*llsh*t.

This is about collecting data and monetizing it. Not supporting CarPlay means a day-one rip/replace of the head unit, so they’d have to discount the car by $1200 to cover it.

Not that I’d ever buy a GM car anyway.

I kid you not - this is probably the sole reason I am not going to wait for a Silverado EV.

GM is doing this for ONE reason, and ONE reason only... The subscription earnings. NO other reason.

Modern infotainment systems cant be swapped out like that unfortunately

Oh is this the excuse now. First it was "Customers don't wan't it"... then it was "we'll make something better...", now it's "we're making drivers safer..."

Just admit you messed up and underestimated how many people use CarPlay.

Who Is the bozo at GM calling the shots? Are we sure it’s Mary Barra and not Gil Amelio or John Sculley? Epic stupidity. “GM is like a ship with a big hole in it. And it’s the CEO’s job to make sure the ship is pointed in the right direction.”

Only it’s the wrong direction…oops.

Apple CarPlay will have improved their sales! A good infotainment system is important in a car IMO and its added value to these cheaper/budget brands.
Apple would have wanted to protect driver info. Google will bend over backwards to redesign the spaceship if they can access the data themselves. GM just wants more subscriptions and user data to sell.

I would have been a first-time GM purchaser, and still really like the Bolt EUV, but I won’t hand over my data if I have the option to buy elsewhere. I’ll probably end up with another Honda or Toyota. I’d love to support American cars, but those dumb@5535 keep making me decide not to. At least Japan gives a Fv¢k about customers.

Consumers are abso-*****-lutely right to blame car manufacturers. There isn't a piece of infotainment hardware out there that isn't the biggest ***** pile of horsesh*t on the planet.

if this were published on April 1st ...
that is a bunch of nonsense this guy has come up with, but whatever, my Bolt EUV does have CarPlay and me next EV will not be a GM, simple as that
I am with you on that one. I have a Bolt EUV that I purchased earlier this year. I won't be getting another GM unless they bring back CarPlay.

That would get ripped out of your dash in about 5 minutes parked on the street here in Vancouver lmao.
Time to bring back the death penalty. Or I would also vote to castrate, fry and make criminals eat their own publicly. Of course that means catching said thief, and of course reverting all the liberal laws that have protected the criminals.
