Who controls the media and software of the car is a HUGE deal, as it is a very central component of the user experience of owning and using a car.

As a result, it's natural that car companies don't want to hang over control of such a key piece to another company - especially one like Apple who has been rumored for years to be building a car of their own.

Owning the entire tech stack is hugely important strategically, which is why "late comers" like Tesla and Rivien can move so quickly: they own their own software.

However, it may not matter what car companies want if the users demand CarPlay or the Android equivalent.

Millions of users are already used to having all the media, contacts, etc from their phones available without having to log in, connect to anything, learn a new interface, or be restricted to one mapping service.

They will be loathe to go back to the world of car manufacturer owned media centers.

In a sense, it's damned if you do and damned if you don't for car manufacturers. Now we just get to see who gets damned the fastest - and my money is on GM.

Lucky for me I would never buy a GM made car. Now another reason to not purchase one. I have relied heavily on my iPhone recently in rental and loan cars when CarPlay has not been fully supported. People will find purchase a different car or a work around when CarPlay is not supported. Alpine have always made excellent infotainment systems.

Did any car company manage to come up with a working entertainment system software so far? My impression was that all companies try to build their own, but then realize that they are car - and not software - companies....

My JDM 09 Odyssey had a built in ‘non replaceable’ unit apparently the air on goes through it too. That lasted all of 2 weeks. Replaced it with a decent android head unit/custom cabling - better anudio quality, wired or wireless CarPlay. And you’ll pry it from my cold dead fingers you b******* lol

So if I’m a rental car company, GM just stopped being an option for me as I want as much flexibility as possible for my customers.

AND, it’s not like the iPhone is going away anytime soon and I would suspect that people are more tied to their phones than their automobile. CarPlay is an absolute decision-caster for me for my cars and has influenced the last three cars our family has purchased. It’s ironic that GM would say that this is for ‘customer safety’ when any thinking person is going to realize that all this will do is incentivize people to handle their iPhones MORE not less if CarPlay is not an option.

Boneheaded is about the only thought that comes to mind.

Sorry GM, not sipping that Kool-Aid..
Literally just bought a used car yesterday. came down to 3 similar vehicles. all 4 door sedans.
nothing fancy..

Sonata, and 2 accords.. got the Sonata because it had apple carplay and the other 2 didn't.
I had in the previous car so it was very high on the list of must have features / options.
clean outside and inside, great MPG, apple carplay.. basically in that order..

Yes, I can i could always do aftermarket but i was tired of driving around looking for a vehicle the past 3-4 weeks and was ready for a "move in ready" vehicle..

They already lost me as a customer when they followed Ford in deciding to just make big ****-off SUVs and trucks instead of normal sized vehicles, but good on them for reinforcing that choice.

I also get to enjoy the satisfaction of not buying from an “American” car manufacturer that makes most of its fleet in other countries.

I have a feeling GM is going to regret this decision. Bad.
I have a feeling most folks aren't tech savvy folks like us here in a tech forum, and that most folks won't notice or care if their car has CarPlay. In fact, most folks will probably be fooled by dealerships into thinking they're "we're doing this because it's safer" BS. And the ad money that will be rolling in from their partnership with Google & Spotify will easily blind them into knowing they made the right decision here.

While I think most of GMs reasoning is absolute garbage... I will say I hate that Apple locks you out of the keypad while you're in a call and the car is moving. This forces you to pull your phone out and dial numbers on the phone itself if you're trying to navigate an IVR.
I'm not sure what you mean. I'm able to press the Phone app on CarPlay and then start a new call by tapping the numbers on the screen.

LOL is apple's carplay licensing fees that expensive?
No, quite the opposite. It's Free! And GM in no way makes any money off of people using it in their cars. Soooo, they're just not going to let you use it.

I would love to enter any car dealership from any GM car and tell the staff I want to buy a car, how much I am willing to pay and make them go crazy with offers just to after ask: does it has CarPlay? And when They say no, just casually walk away :D
YES! I had a Chevy Cavalier, and then a Malibu, and now an Impala- all from the same dealership. I have a great relationship with their service department. My Impala's a 2018 and getting long in the tooth, and had actually been looking into getting something new. I know whatever I'd want when I'd want it, now won't have CarPlay. Might play dumb and get along with the process anyway just to walk out on them when they say no more CarPlay. 15 some years as a customer, you'd think someone like me might be enough for a dealership to question it? Nah... lol
