Why is this a new article? This was reported months ago that they were dropping CarPlay and AA from their EV lineup and keeping it in their ICE vehicles. I guess the new info is their bonehead reason. They are only doing it to charge people subscription fees and that can't be done through CarPlay or AA.

Oooo. They’re doubling down.

Seems like Apple and Google should sue for slander. These are baseless claims and not backed up since they haven’t tested their own system.

GM is trash. Let’s be honest. They can’t do better than Apple.
Actually?? Maybe you’re right! If the interface works so well in every other vehicle, what makes it so unsafe in GM’s cars?? And then to basically blame it on Apple (and Google? Which is weird..)?

I’d like to note that I’ve almost always had GM cars on my nearly 5 decades on this planet. I was in a car accident where someone hit me and their safety features are amazing. I’m alive. Bought another GM after that, and now? Won’t be buying another.

"like bad connections, slow response times, compatibility issues, and connectivity problems, leading drivers to be distracted from the road with smartphone troubleshooting."

Total BS, and love that they have no testing to prove this. And they think users won't have issues with their crap system that they are going to force on users? Or are they going to ban any type of phone connection. Before CarPlay and AA, users plugged in their iPod or iPhone and the headunit controlled the music on the devices. Are they going to block that too since they think it is so unsafe with their reasons?

GM cars are garbage anyway.

Dunno. A friend uses CarPlay in his BMW and one thing that annoys us is that it frequently and randomly interrupts the satnav with whatever was played last on Apple Music. Not playing any music but just switching from the BMW's internal navigation to a picture of the last track played. That gets old very quickly.

I’ve got a small USB drive connected to my Impala with a bunch of meticulously curated metadata’d music. I’ve made sure they’re all .mp3’s and have a good folder structure. If I change or add something, sometimes it takes weeks until it’s actually recognized and I can play that music. Their system sucks. Now they’re betting the farm on everyone just using Sirius or Spotify, and I don’t use either. Sooo, yeah.

After seeing one of the new Buicks on the road, my wife and I had added them to the list as considerations for our next vehicle.

It may sound silly to some, but this news just scratched them off that list.

To me, how we interact with technology is just as important as the capabilities of that technology itself.

GM is struggling. I know how to save it! Let's remove a feature that nearly every car buyer will want when buying a new car! FFS, what a stupid move!
GM is definitely not struggling. Look at the latest quarterly earnings. I, like many here, don’t like hearing that GM is dumping car play, but it would not be the factor that determines a sale or not. iPhones will still work with Bluetooth, so streaming music will still work for me. 99% of the time I don’t use navigation apps.

Considering anything GM is on the lowest possible list for my car purchase interest, fine. If others (that I actually care about) do this, then I may have cause for concern.

However as it reads, this is a play to provide more of a cash grab for them, and is one reason why I still enjoy driving older cars with ICE under the hood. I can (and have done) do engine rebuilds, sadly I haven't mastered home brewing a Lithium battery.

I have a Chevy Bolt EUV which I really like a lot. I'm picky with cars but I have almost no complaints with this one. Too bad I will not be able to consider another one in a few years...

Luckily, it has been decades since I'd even consider a car from GM. If I were to buy American, it's Ford. Otherwise, I'm all in on Toyota.
I’m the opposite — it took me decades to consider GM; but the Corvette and Lyric caught my attention and my positive experience with CarPlay in GM rentals made both cars bonafide options for my next vehicle. However, my interest completely faded with the CarPlay phase out announcement and plans to embed Google in their vehicles. Sigh.

Apple CarPlay will have improved their sales! A good infotainment system is important in a car IMO and its added value to these cheaper/budget brands.

Back in 2019 when I was replacing my elderly Acura, I went to my local Honda dealer to check out what they had available, since at that time, Acura no longer had any hatchbacks in their line, while Honda did. First thing I stated that I wanted was that the new vehicle must be a hatchback. Second requirement was that it have Apple CarPlay.

Interestingly enough, I tend to use just the wireless BT functionality for playing music from my iTunes library in the car while running local errands since I'm making frequent stops and am jumping in-and-out of the car at each new location and it's just easier not to have to keep plugging in the iPhone for wired CarPlay, then unplugging the iPhone very soon again so I can put it safely into my purse before entering the destination shop, library, bank, whatever. The iPhone stays safely in the purse the entire time I am running errands, I am able to enjoy my music in the car: win-win. On longer trips, though, it's a different story and CarPlay is wonderful for those situations.

Not that I'd ever buy a GM car, but I do think they are making what is likely to be a fatal mistake in terms of their future sales....
This is why Wireless CarPlay is so great. I'd never use CarPlay except for road trips if I had to plug in. I have aftermarket units in both my cars that do Wireless CarPlay so I have it open 100% of the time I'm driving and I love it.

its getting too expensive to stick with Apple.

GM took the cheaper way out.

Just like paying fast food chains here in CA $20 an hour. something has to give.

Then they should do a recall on all their cars with CarPlay and update the system or replace the infotainment with something safe. Don’t just leave those cars on the road.

This is all about controlling the data and being in a better position to sell subscription services for things that CarPlay and Android Auto offer from the phone.

Alpine 9" stereo. SOmeone else put a Pioneer unit in their Corolla, but that took a bit more modification on their part. But I'm ok with how this sits. It bothers some more than others. I personally think it looks fine.
That would get ripped out of your dash in about 5 minutes parked on the street here in Vancouver lmao.
