They've been losing out on driver data and subscription fees for years (and I'm guessing Sirius radio has also been similarly affected). I am surprised not to see this happen sooner, BUT it doesn't necessarily rule out a GM for me (though I've been a Honda driver for decades). My main question is whether or not they'll do things to restrict functionality if I buy an after market CarPlay system to replace their proprietary spyware?

So you think because GM did it, others will follow? HAHAHAHAHA Okay

If it doesn’t hurt their sales enough - Absolutely, 100%. Bookmark it.

Automakers are already dropping out of CarPlay ultra after previously saying they’d support it.

If the largest auto company in the US is successful in pushing back, others will join them.

Seriously, bookmark this.

GM thinks that they are Tesla. Good luck selling vehicles and enjoy losing customers! Worst decision they ever made!

To be fair, Tesla thinks they're Yellow Cab, so the auto market as a whole is having a bit of an identity crisis...

But yes, I agree, GM is off my shopping list as I'm sure they are for half the smartphone buying public.

GM just wants full control of your data in the car, they want to be able to sell that data to ad companies, tracking companies and insurances. They also want to make an extra buck on updates and force you to go to a dealer for any software related work.

I think this is the trend we will see most makers do. No one will want to handle Google or Apple the revenue from services & subscriptions, and the interface of their product. It sucks, but unfortunately I see that’s where we are going.

They'll backtrack. It might take a couple years, but they survey the hell out of car buyers, and if "Lack of CarPlay" appears enough as a reason people aren't buying, they'll add it back.
Of course, people who don't buy GM won't be taking GM buyer surveys.

Will need to show up in broader market surveys that ask what cars you considered and what cars you didn't, and then why.

GM is about to learn the hard way that this is a very bad idea. People these days are attached to their phones and making it more difficult to interface with them in the car is not going to help sales.

GM's own app, based on Android Automotive, is actually not bad because it uses the excellent Google Maps and Waze for its navigational system. What GM should do is work with Apple so there is a "GM Connect" app that the infotainment system can still access music and audio (including Apple Music) stored on the iPhone plus full phone functionality on the app. Essentially, when you start the GM Connect app on the iPhone and connect it via wired or Bluetooth connection, the infotainment system full interacts with the iPhone.

Perhaps Apple should sell and install after market CarPlay stereos. ;)

I have a feeling after all the other OEMs follow suit that the long term path forward will be for Apple to get their apps onto the OEM platforms.

I hate Carplay in my Jeep. It's intrusive and i don't use it. But as soon as a passenger plugs in their iPhone it starts automatically with carplay and plays their music. If I mute the music then every time the passenger swips or touches the screen it unmutes and starts playing music again. WTF? Carplay is totally useless, has not a sing;le feature I ever use and I still can't deactivate it for good. Apple is great on hardware and the OS, but they should
stay away from software solutions please.

Most useless tech our household has is the Nav system that we have in our 2015 Audi. It was outdated when we bought it and has only gotten worse. It's useless.

I'm confident that GM's product will basically become a brick too.
Not defending GM but they regularly update their infotainment system at least for now (and why wouldnt they, they want to charge a subscription for it!)

That said I am disappointed. I will keep my diesel tahoe until the wheels fall off and go from there.
