Nothing new to see here. It's the same old limited app with some Material Design shininess slapped on top. They still can't seem to manage anything as basic as styled text or an "all inboxes" view. Quite disappointing.
Is there really still no unified inbox? I remember getting my iPhone 4S and assuming that that feature had to be coming soon. Ha!

I'll stick with Outlook. The newer mobile version is tremendous, where the desktop version still feels like it's 2001.

Looks good until you actually use it. I don't know why Google constantly needs to screw up basic iOS interface.

Like swipe to go back works in some places and not others even when there's clearly a back arrow in the top left corner.

Why do you have a hamburger menu that you can't slide to open?

Why do you have the same function when you slide from the left or the right?

Why the hell do touch targets in the hamburger menu get highlighted when you're only scrolling through the menu?

Outlook app and even Apple's Mail app are better.

Whoever's screen was used to show the Inbox needs to hit the unsubscribe button more often.

meh i moved onto Outlook, mainly for the Apple Watch integration...and havent looked back. i open the gmail maybe once a month to search something (a lot faster), but that's it.

although i see this new version fixes one of my biggest pet peeves with the Gmail app -- phone #s were not tappable. dates are still not, though.

Do they have a version of Google inbox for iOS yet? Once you use inbox its impossible to use regular Gmail or any other email app anymore. Inbox truly changes the way you do E-mail.
I couldn't ever get into inbox because it was so different. I can see your point.

Gmail for Android has Exchange support, I believe. Until the iOS version does as well, I can't use this. Well, I can, but I'd still need to use another mail app for work, which seems a bit ridiculous.

Actually, having your work email pop up whenever you check your personal email seems a bit ridiculous to me. :D

Our work uses Google Apps for Education, so I have the Gmail app (with notifications disabled) for my work email - but my personal email is handled via Apple Mail. If it's after hours, I don't want to see my work email unless I make a deliberate decision to check it... which I limit to one or two times per evening.

I don't see a way to select and manage more than one message at a time, period. Nor can you do any message management from the index (except archive/delete) - you have to be viewing a message to do most stuff now.

They've basically removed features - courageously I guess.

Edit: No, I'm wrong - if you long-hold a message then you regain the ability to select more than one (by checking them off like before). Im not crazy about it, but it works.

You can just tap the contact pictures/icons to select. No need to hold down.

I still wish they had offline access to all emails and offline search. Not every city in America has perfect internet access like Silicon Valley ;0

Swedish translation, "vidarebefordra" means to forward an email. I love how they think the last character needs to be on a separate row.

I wish they'd just bring back push compatibility. I don't want multiple email clients on my phone.
The Mail app has never worked consistently for me. While it is my favorite, I dare not go without the official Gmail app for notifications.

When I open the mail app at 3pm and it says "last update yesterday." I get really angry.

Sounds like a good update. I've been thinking about using gmail as main mail service for a while now.

I see a lot of confusion with the new UI. It looks like the Android version, so maybe it functions like the Android version as well. If it does, here are some answers to common complaints/questions:

To bring the left menu up without pressing the hamburger, swipe right from the very left edge of the screen.

To select a message, tap on the avatar on the left side of the message row.

Hope that helps/works

Another big feature that appears to have been removed - in the old iOS Gmail client, by turning off the signatures capability, the signature you have set up for each "send as" email address on their servers through the desktop GMail would be appended based on which email address you are "sending as". This is now gone!
