It's obvious from the side-by-side comparison screenshot how much better the previous app was, more email visible on-screen, less wasted space and an obvious UI. Now you get to look at photos and waste time trying to figure out how to do anything. Worst app update in the history of the universe.
 
Is it really worth the five bucks and then another ten for the Mac app?
I have both iOS & Mac versions, but I dont use the mac version very much. I rely more on gmail.com.
The iOS is definitely worth it as they are always updating and supporting new features that Apple rolls out.
In Sept they added WatchOS 3 support, widgets, and more.
In Oct they added haptic feedback and improved notification preview.

And clicking links no longer will use Chrome but Safari instead? Seriously Google?
