I have to say... how ridiculous is it that this is the latest feature in the fourteenth major release of this operating system? I thought this issue had long been decided in the 90s when Microsoft was sued for antitrust for enforcing Internet Explorer on everyone. Is this just going to be some back and forth tug of war for every generation to have to revisit? Good grief.

Now how about changing the default music app?

That's what iOS 26 will be all about.

I've asked before, but feel compelled to ask again: why on Earth would anyone purposely add Google anything to their devices? Not only are their intentions A) we'll documented, B) of the worst variety and C) unapologetic so, my forced experience with Google Classroom this past year was a nightmare. What a cluster of a UX. Stunning, actually.
Compelled why? If you've already asked, I'm sure the question was already answered. Maybe not to your satisfaction, but pretty sure it's been answered. Claiming data collection for advertising is the worst variety of intention is hyperbole. For every anecdotal nightmare there is an equal and opposite anecdotal dream scenario. Neither being particularly useful.

I use outlook (absolutely best email client for iOS in my opinion) and I can set it as default as well.
Sweet.

Apple Maps are useless in most countries so... Yeah...

Stupid question perhaps, but what exactly does setting this as the default mail app get me? All I can think of is mailto links will open in Gmail. I never click those links.

Before we had the share sheet with Gmail included I desperately wanted this. Now I am scratching my head.

They're not very useful in the United States, that's for sure. Every few years I try Apple Maps again, and the routing is still pretty terrible.
In Switzerland it‘s gotten actually very good with the navigation and routing. Easily as good as TomTom these days. Can‘t say that about Google Maps. Google Maps is superb for finding places though, which Apple Maps still lacks behind.

Tried running a company on Apple's super enterprise software already? Apple Arcade doesn't count.

We can and should push further. The end goal is being able to control every default app, including the App Store.

You know... like you have already been able to do for decades on Apple's MacOS.

The default app stuff stinks.

You cant make a bookmark on the homscreen with Chrome and if you open a homescreen bookmark made by safari it opens safari.

Another case of Apple only giving us half the feature.

What if you delete safari?

Hey, at least you get public transport info, bike routes, flyovers and their version streetview. Poland doesn't even have Siri 🤣.

No way I install anything from Google if I can avoid it. I use gmail, but via the mail app. Wish I could break that dependence, but it's a lot of work to migrate email.
Then you're not doing it right. No joke. Just about any service these days can import from GMail, no huhu.

Because iOS sandboxes apps pretty well, unlike Android.

Like iTunes, me, and Apple TV+? Any app you pay for is likely cross platform.

Like imessage? Safari? icloud? photos, Like actual apps that would be more useful cross platform? Why would you only want the apps you have to pay for to be cross platform? I mean I obviously know why Apple does but why would you as a consumer?

No need to be grateful, since Google really needs the apps to be multi platform so that they can continue to harvest data.

Blah blah blah. Yes yes yes. This has been stated a billion times now on MacRumors. That's each and every users choice to make if they want to use google apps or not. No one is forcing you to use Google apps and it has nothing to do with Apple selectively only offering cross platform on apps they make money on.

Is it just me or, when I click an email link on notes app, it doesn’t let me compose email on gmail but it opens the compose page of my mail’s app icloud account instead.
