There are ads? I never saw ads in Gmail app. Maybe it's because I'm using G Suite, or maybe it's webblock.

Found out that it was due to the "promotions" and "social" tabs. Once I got rid of those the ads went away. Now I'm using and enjoying the app again!

That's google doing you a favour filtering out spams and promotions in your inbox lol 😂 That's a good thing. You can "Mark as spam" so that similar emails will go directly to the spam box, which will not trigger alert notifications of recept.

So I still can't set Gmail as the default in iOS 14 on 4 iPhones. Settings is missing the set as default part and I have the latest update. Am I missing something here?

They're not very useful in the United States, that's for sure. Every few years I try Apple Maps again, and the routing is still pretty terrible.

And I've used Apple Maps exclusively for several years in over 14 different states without an issue. I've often compared the routes to Google Maps on numerous occasions and majority of the times they are identical. In cities where the routes are numerous, the various routes often overlap so it because a crap shoot which one is the best.

they don't have to if they don't want Apple customers, we won't miss them.

You're not every Apple customer. Plenty of Apple users use or have used Google apps at one point. Every early iphone user used Google Maps since it was the default nav app back in the day.

Now how about changing the default music app?

Since that's a revenue driving app you'll probably never see it which IMO is an anti trust monopolistic issue especially now that they have allowed users to set 3rd party email and browser apps.

I'm currently an AM user and still believe you should have the choice of setting which ever music app you want as the default.

Ads? I have been using gmail and the iOS app for a long time. I had to check again to be sure. I don’t see any ads. Where would I find them in the app?
Thought the same. Are they at the top but I don't notice? Or were they recently added since I switched to Outlook when I got sick of them dragging their feet on Dark Mode?

Honestly, for me, the ads are nowhere to be found. But I won’t assume that he isn’t telling the truth.

I feel bad about Dark Mode. For whatever reason, it became active for me a long time ago. Maybe because I’ve had a gmail account since launch all those many years ago. So many people said Dark Mode is still not available, and for a while, I thought they just couldn’t figure it out. I assumed. Not proud. I’m hoping everyone has it now.

Respectfully, I'd have to disagree with you on that. The app is very disappointing, IMHO. You can't attach a message to another message without downloading it as a PDF, and then uploading it as an attachment. You can't manage contacts in the app (need to use a separate app). Labels vs folders is poorly implemented (I want an auto-rule to move a certain type of message out of the main inbox to a designated subfolder, but can't, as I can only "LABEL" them, and they stay in the main inbox. I still have to manually move them.) Every time I use the app, I'm very frustrated with it.

On a side note, Spark and Outlook can also be set as the default mail app too. I'd choose one of these over Gmail all day.
Fair points. I might give Outlook for gmail for mac a go. Spark seems more like a design tool than an email tool???

Butterfly switch is hardly the same thing as this.
You're right, it is way worse than this! And one of many examples, both in hardware and software. I yearn for the days when Apple "just works". I don't know if you've noticed, but they've dropped the "it just works" slogan, and for very good reason.

except butterfly switch problems affected less than a few percent of customers which requires designing a brand new model of a physical product involving hundreds of people while a lack of features to gmail affects hundreds of millions of people simply because google refused 2-3 engineers to implement a solution in a week

you’re not thinking rationally here.

How incredibly useless.

If there was a Thunderbird app for iOS, I might care. But the Gmail app is awful even if you do use a Gmail account, which I don't.

What I want to be able to change is the maps app. Apple maps are TERRIBLE, always have been. Sure, they're slightly better now than they were when Apple prematurely ejaculated that app and splattered it on us, but not enough better to be usable.

Waze works. Waze has all the streets where they belong 99.999% of the time, and in the very, very rare case where they don't I can fix it myself.

Google maps work. Even Bing maps are more accurate than Apple's garbage.

Given what Apple's maps look like, there's no way I'd ever get in an Apple self-driving car.

Mine is 6.0.200825, and I have this option (not setting it, but the option is there).

Maybe the latest version was a little slower to appear in the Australian app store. I have the option now and have set it.
