Alright, so after thinking it over I think I've come to a decision. I'm going to continue using Gmail and iCloud Mail. I'll use iCloud Mail for all my personal emails and Gmail for registrations or mailing lists. I refuse to use the Gmail app because I prefer to have a unified inbox and the stock Mail app does it perfectly for me. Also, I've decided to set my gmail account to hourly fetch since the mail I receive in my gmail (after I update my email settings across my accounts) won't be as important so I won't be as bothered if I can't get push.

Two things though:

1. No one has commented on Aliases in iCloud Mail so I guess I'll look it up on their support page.

2. If I forward my Gmail to my iCloud mail wouldn't I then get push for those emails as well...?

You can also look into outlook.com. That supports push and you can set it to get your gmail. Then use the native mail app if you prefer.

The gmail experience on iOS is getting frustrating. For a while I lost push through activesync but it then started to work again.

I'd like to have push/sync on my iOS devices and access from a desktop client like mail.app in OSX.

Gmail through exchange activesync (on newer devices which will be inevitable) will no longer give push.

Outlook does excellent push through activesync on mobile but no imap connection for desktop clients

iCloud does great push on mobile and the desktop client, but doesn't push/sync read status of mail items and I can't use my own domain name with it.

For a while I forwarded my gmail to iCloud, and setup iCloud in OSX and iOS to use gmail for any replies or outgoing mail. Worked great, but couldn't stand how iCloud doesn't push/sync read status.

Just use the Gmail app instead. That's what I do.

I find it to be really hard on my battery life. Anyone else experience this?

I'm wondering if I should switch back to Mail app. Or use Mailbox. Or anything else...

Does anyone know why Google doesn't support push notifications in iOS?

I'm seriously considering switching over to iCloud Mail for my personal mail and using Gmail for mailing lists or signups. I'm already using exchange for my work email and it supports push so I don't have any issues there. It's just Gmail that is really bugging me with the constant fetching.

How does iCloud compare to Gmail in features?

I rarely use the Gmail desktop site unless I need to adjust settings like filters or for mass email deletion.

I found myself considering the same, and still may, however, Evomail has kept me from jumping my beloved gmail ship for now. Give it a try before you move over.

I know exactly where you are coming from. I heavily rely on Gmail to send me bank alerts. With push disabled when Gmail is setup as exchange through the native mail app I was really disappointed. I changed all my important e-mails over to outlook.com which does natively push.

I went back to gmail again but using their app this time. I don't know. I may go back to outlook.com once more but it's a pain in the butt to update every website with a change in e-mail address.

You can forward your email from Gmail to your Outlook.com account and still continue to give out your Gmail address, this is what I have done. You can reply like normal to people.

Funny thing is, Outlook.com is down for some users right now (myself included).
Just like Gmail and prettty much any other mail (or almost any service) provider has been knwon to be down at times here and there.

gmail app is just fine you can live with two apps for mail.

I could but I shouldn't have to just because Google doesn't want to offer push. If Google thought I would stick with them after they dropped support for push then they were wrong. I know I might be just one person to them but I could care less about them if they don't want to offer the same level of service across the board.

I guess, to each their own.

I went back to using NuevaSync to get push gmail. That's the service I used before Google announced Gmail sync and now that they killed it i'm back with them.

Sure, it's not perfect. But I really really hate seeing ios mail notifications for emails I have already read on my computer.

I signed up for the free trial of NuevaSync after reading your post.
It's been about 3 hours and they emails are coming in just like the Gmail push I have on my iPhone.

I've been looking for alternative since I will lose the Gmail push when I get a new device.

Thanks

Yeah the only problem with Outlook.com is no IMAP support for Mac/PC mail clients. I only hope someday that Apple enhances iCloud support for read/deleted updates in real time.

For what it is worth, you could always try Outlook.com.

They support push email, and allow you to add an alias and you can setup your Gmail to forward there. They also support free email for your domain name as well, with push email if you ever went that route. There spam filtering is good and they give you a generous portion of space for your email.

That's what I ended up doing when Google stopped supporting push for Gmail. And so far I have no regrets. And if you are a PC user, you can download the Outlook Connector for Outlook on your PC and use Outlook, which is basically like an Exchange server, Calendar Items, Contacts, & Email are all in sync on your PC, iDevices, and the Web.

Hmm, thanks for the tip. As far as spam filtering goes for outlook, it's pretty decent but still fails to catch a good amount of spam. But I think it really depends on where you're sharing your email. One thing I hadn't considered was that my email address has about 15 characters in it before the "@domain.com". Personally, I hate having long email addresses :p

Ok this is what I do. I forward my gmail account to iCloud email. Works beautiful.

It does lack some, but if you spend a few minutes a week, before you delete the email that is spam, login to your Outlook.com account and click junk for that particular email. Over a period of time you will see less and less junk. I hardly ever need to login and add things to junk anymore, it will pick up your patterns and pretty much learn what is junk and what isnt.

I have no regrets moving to Outlook.com and having my Gmail forwarded to there. I have nothing against Gmail either, but when push went away, which is something I like, I made the switch and have push mail on my iPhone & iPad and use the built in mail app just fine. Both devices are in sync, calendar, contacts, and email.

Someone said Google doesn't want to support push anymore. I don't understand, why would a service provider like them not want to support push? Is there a better alternative standard to adopt to perform the same function of instantaneous email retrieval?

Instead of installing Gmail and having a redundant email app on my iPhone I just set messages to my Gmail address to forward to my iCloud inbox, so I can get them to push that way. Works just fine!

I use evomail too but the app needs work IMHO.

Push is a hit or miss, not very consistent nor reliable. Although I'm blaming this on me running a beta OS so I haven't complained to them yet.

The app badge count it's never accurate.

Unibox has a bug that it doesn't returned to unified box from a single account.

I like the app and I'm still using it since it supports different clients ( something mailbox doesn't do) but like I said it needs work.

They probably don't want to have to keep paying licensing fees to Microsoft for using ActiveSync, unless they're recovering the cost (by charging people for Google Apps). For their own OS, I guess it's a nice selling point (AFAIK, Android phones can still use ActiveSync for Gmail push) ... It's their prerogative of course (they're a business, not a charity) but it does suck for those of us who have gotten used to the convenience of push Gmail.

Your solution is certainly doable, but the problem I have with it is that replies to incoming mail will come from iCloud, not my personal domain. I don't want to have to explain to people why I'm replying from a different email address, and I don't particularly want to have to give out my .Mac address because I don't know how long I'll be using it. So for me, it looks like this:

  1. Pay for Google Apps (expensive for my family because it's per-user)
  2. Use GMail app (hate the delays and lack of background refresh)
  3. Use Outlook.com (push support with aliases, but no IMAP for desktop)
  4. Configure mail account to use iCloud IMAP + GMail SMTP (should work, but incoming mail doesn't always push)

I'm using #4, forwarding a copy of my GMail to iCloud, but as I mentioned above, it's not 100% effective. Mail pushes sometimes, although that may just be an iOS 7 glitch.

Sure wish Google still let new users set up ActiveSync :(

Solution: Install the Gmail app and it will send push notifications to you when you get new mails.

I hear ya. My go to app was Sparrow but with push gone it's been sidelined. I think I will move to iCloud, in the long term it's probably prudent.

Yeah I know. I forwarded my Gmail and yahoo e-mails to my outlook.com account but chose to update all the important websites where my address is registered to my outlook.com address.

The best solution for gmail users wanting push without paying $50 per year for an apps account is to forward to iCloud - but don't forget to disable iCloud smtp and use google ones so your replies come from gmail, unless you plan to migrate.

That or just wait 15 min :)

iCloud doesn't sync read statuses between mobile devices until you open the mail app or receive more mail.

I think that is to conserve battery and limit non essential transfer to batches ie when new mail comes through.

Outlook is another option but has no imap if you use mac mail afaik

Updated OTA to iOS 7 beta 6 this morning and set up my Gmail account using Exchange with m.google.com for 'Server' settings.

Push works fine so far.

Post edited... and thanks C DM for pointing that out.

"as an Exchange account using IMAP"? If you are using IMAP then it's IMAP, if you are using Exchange then it's Exchange, but you can't really combine the two somehow.
