Gmail doesn't support push because Apple doesn't let them. This is Apple not Google. I would use the GM app that pushes.

Gmail app is non functional.

Get email on computer, iPhone, iPad.
Check on computer.
iPhone/iPad app still has message badge.

Yeah. No thank you.
Using Mail.app to check email on any device and all Mail app sync instantaneously.

Tree killer!

I'm an eBay PowerSeller, so I ship a lot of items. I print out a lot of PayPal receipt/invoice emails directly from my phone to put in the shipping box. Not having airprint functionality is a big loss for me.

iCloud, or me.com is terrible. Terrible spam filtering is on the top of my list.

Try again. Apple is fine with push email. Google is trying to get folks to use their app so they voluntarily ditched exchange support for free accounts and push across the board

Nice try?
Okay man. Then how come it wasn't available before they disabled exchange support?

They supported exchange as their way to do push. So why have two systems

I'm just messing with you :)

it's better than the built in app, try mailbox maybe?

I've tried them all. Mailbox, Gmail, and the other one that Google bought and killed I don't remember the name at the moment.

Nothing beats the built in mail client in my opinion.

I use combination of apps to get push.

I set up the gmail app with push and the notifications I like. Then keep my gmail account in Mail and check it there since I like that app better.

so i was under the impression that imap also supports push. if you set up a gmail account via add account - gmail, it sets it up as imap. how come that doesnt have push notifications then?

secondly, for those saying apple wont allow google to support push, i dont think thats true. afterall hotmail push notification works fine. so i cant see why apple would tell google to not support exhange on an iphone.

Lastly, does exchange/push still work on android just not on the iphone?

I went back to using NuevaSync to get push gmail. That's the service I used before Google announced Gmail sync and now that they killed it i'm back with them.

Sure, it's not perfect. But I really really hate seeing ios mail notifications for emails I have already read on my computer.

+1 for Nuevasync.

Google's decision to drop push sucks. I hate their new gmail client. Nuevasync works perfectly well for me.

Gmail supports push through IMAP using the IMAP IDLE command. For whatever reason it seems like Apple has never enabled IMAP IDLE in iOS.

Lucky for you it doesn't. Push is constantly checking but fetch only does according to the time you set.

I was under the impression that with push the notification is sent out from apple's side to my phone whenever there was a notification or update. And my phone would not have to request anything at all, just stay on standby.

You are missing the point. Someone sends an email like "meeting tomorrow at 7pm" which gets linked in the mail.app and then can open a new event in the calendar. Can't do that with the google app.

Ah yes, I see what you meant about integration. You are correct - gmail app doesn't support that.

I've used Boxcar for several years now. Instant push notifications when I receive a Gmail. Then I launch Mail to read it, et voila.

you have a very low standard when it comes to Email management

you have a very low standard when it comes to Email management

No actually jmmo20 is right. There simply is no mail client that works as well as the built in mail client on the iPhone. I've tried all the others as well and it seems like they are better until you realize that email is really simple and all that gimmicky stuff they keep coming up with just gets in the way.

For the things you really need your email client to do well, the mail.app client does astonishingly well. Most of the problems people run across is the fact that they use gmail at all.

Look, I was one of the very first people to get a gmail account back in 2004. I swore by it at the time even though I still couldn't manage email in it well. It has really good spam filters but so do most others nowadays. But it has become bloated with features that make you feel like you are managing email better but in reality you are just complicating things. But most importantly, gmail suffers from the fact that it uses a nonstandard implementation of IMAP which makes any client you use require a hacky workaround to support its most basic features and it still won't work the same everywhere you are able to check it.

That's the real problem with gmail and it's a serious one. In reality, email is a really simple concept that gmail needlessly overcomplicates. The day I switched away from gmail was the day I found email nirvana. I haven't looked back since. And if you use an iphone, that frees you up to using iCloud for calendar and contacts (and everything else) as well. The simplicity of using iCloud for everything with it working the same everywhere has done wonders for my productivity and peace of mind.

There is beauty and efficiency in simplicity.

Gmail doesn't support push anymore.

Personally, I've switched over to Yahoo (with my iCloud being forwarded there): They support IMAP and sending/receiving as other account, much like Gmail and the webmail version is very lightweight. I tried Outlook.com but it just seemed a bit to bloated and excessive for me (with no IMAP support).
