I have 4 e-mail accounts loaded into the default iOS mail program.

I have it set to check for new mail once an hour (to save battery life). (I could enable Push Notifications too, but why waste battery life?)

It works perfectly, gives me notifications and lets me pick which mail account to use as the "default" one for sending and replying to other people.

I didn't have to do anything special - just type in the e-mail address and the password in the account set-up menu and that's it. Everything after that is automated by the e-mail client. The program automatically checks for and detects the type of mail server used for me.

All new mail goes into the "All Inboxes" tab for easy viewing.

All spam is kept server-side and doesn't get pushed to my phone (although I can check it if I want to by going to the individual e-mail account tabs)

I don't see the problem with it.

Wow. I am glad this works for you.

But the idea of logging into webmail via a browser seems like a nightmare to me. Having to deal with getting a good connection, entering login and password, etc etc just seems like so much work.

Having the email sitting right on my phone seems so much easier. And for sure easier to find an old email. And, if you have multiple email accounts, then you have to log into each one. I have 4 emails auto download to my iphone and mac.

Then again, some people with computers do webmail vs downloading via Outlook, Mail, or whatever email program they use. I will never get that either.

I only get prompted to "re enter" my just my password about once a month...not a big deal for me.

The built in one I do have it set up and I do sometimes use it for things that just go to my inbox, but like i said, it doesn't handle labels/filters well.

and yes I also have gmail.com bookmarked an use that rather then outlook

I use Sparrow and the Gmail app. My .me account is on Sparrow and my Gmail account is for work purposes and I like to keep them both separated, so I just use both apps.

sparrow is awesome!! im jailbroken and use sparrow+ so i get push as well. couldnt live without it now. been a gmail user for 10 years prior. now i can use both accounts and switch instantly.

This. And if you are jailbroken, Sparrow+ tweak adds push functionality.

I have requested the devs of Sparrow to add both an iPad and Android ICS version of their app. All Android mail apps suck big time compared to Sparrow, even gmail!

Correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that Push uses even less battery than checking hourly. Due to the phone only being pinged once a message is pushed. If you get 2 emails in 2 separate hours, all those other hours where you get nothing the phone is using battery to login and check?

Maybe Im wrong.

While on the topic, is push notification using the Mail app (via gmail setup as MS Exchange), vs Push alerts via the Gmail app itself virtually the same from a battery usage standpoint?

Sparrow and sparrow+ when I'm Jailbroken.

Sparrow and Mail.app when I'm stock for notifications.

Off topic:
Question about gmail, if I forward my hotmail to gmail, the hotmail messages will appear as read in hotmail and deleted if deleted or, is it like with mail clients that they will still show up as new even though they were read and deleted in a client?

I'm using the native mail with gmail and if I read the new mail on my computer or laptop why does the unread mail notification stay in the phone and never updates? I have to open each mail on the phone to get rid of the new mail counts.

I tried using Exchange instead of the mail-gmail to setup this email account and it didn't take. Do I need to put server.gmail.com in the Server dialogue line? It doesn't work and I get 'unable to verify account information'.

Thank you, I knew about this, but I *forgot* about it...since iCloud went live. I had used it for Google sync (with Gmail account on Microsoft Exchange) for Google Calendars. Now I'm using iCloud services

Thank you, for this. Since I'm using Gmail account for my new & cool YouTube channel. I need it to 'push,' but it wasn't because I didn't go through 'Microsoft Exchange' account process.

So, Thanks again for this!!:D

When you set up your gmail with the mail app you have to set it up as a microsoft exchange account...not a gmail account.

No problem, for every 99 people I tick off on this forum I make one happy.

I like sparrow but it lacks push. In a lot of ways that is nice. It's like the old days when you needed to be at a computer to view e-mail. However sometimes when things are time sensitive push is a life saver.

I go back and forth a lot between sparrow and the default mail app.

When I use the mail application I lose out on push (so I have to open application to receive mail).

When I use the gmail application I lose notifications (I have to rely on the badge on the application icon).

So which do you guys use?

I don't know if this was said, because I'm on my phone right now, and I don't have enough time to read the entire thread, but: you can setup your Gmail account as an exchange server and then you can push. Just use Google for an article, it's very very easy to do. By the way, I suggest you use two-step verification so if anyone tries to break into your Gmail account, or you lose your phone, they can't get in.
