Well I have been bitten more by nostalgia, I really miss the day when those machine were "exciting", It might be that I am getting older, but as much as I love the news stuff, computer had a different "taste" back then, and by using Power PC again and those beautiful machines I hope to put the fun back into computers.

It wasn't just Apple, back then there was an immense gulf between ordinary consumers and those who enjoyed cutting edge technology - having a state of the art device was like being from Star Trek. Having state of the art now is relatively meaningless...better camera, bigger screen, more cores...yawn.

Especially when combined with music-sharing to the subwooferd iMac ...

Or a subwoofer'd TAM!:)
I was demo-ing a classical CD the other day on my TAM to a friend. He was (almost literally) blown away by the high quality - and especially the volume from this '97 vintage Mac. Afterwards I switched to several pre-tuned FM radio stations, and again his jaw dropped from the awesome BOSE sound.

Now if only I could find a fair priced TAM :p

Yeah, looking back, "rediscovering" the pleasure of music was the best thing, that came with my switch to Macs and iOS in 2009!
It was such an improvement in performance that came just "out of the box" with all those devices.
Went for an old iPod Classic 3rd gen. as my personal birthday-present recently to revive that feeling of "having a thousand songs in my pocket" (which I didn't have at the time, when that tiny device hit the shelves...)

Give that iBook to me!! I want / need it! :p

Oh wow, matching graphite iBook and iMac! Kind of jealous!

I have a launch bondi blue iMac and have contemplated buying a matching iBook for a couple years (at least bondi blue is easy to find...) but I find I don't use my iMac enough as it is. I just emulate on my modern MacBook.

I really miss the design from 1998-2004 or so. The original iMacs, iBooks, G3 Tower, and the Cube. Those things make look goofy or nothing special today but compared to the boring beige towers that EVERY OTHER COMPUTER was made out of, they were amazing.

I am about (well Sunday) if everything goes well to get 5 PPC machines for very low, at around 50 $ there's a guy that promised me 3 x PowerMac G5 (no hard drive but everything else he says good contidion) 1 MDD (complete) and 1 B&W G3 (again complete).

I am as excited about this a the people that are waiting for the iPhone X......may be I need assistance :p...

Also I do not think my wife will be happy as I am when she sees me coming home with 5 computer :p.

Well it finally came, and surprise surprise it was in its original box, I unboxed like it was new :D and that's a huge bonus!!!

But even better than that , the machine is in pristine condition, it really looks like a new machine.... wow amazed...

It is a Dual 867 with 768 mb of ram and a Geforce 4 MX (i think it was the standard config apart from the ram), and I am even more excited as this was pretty much the machine i had back in the days (I did not know the specs cause the guy did not have a compatible monitor to try it in and he was not sure the box was the correct one he said).

So only thing I added is an Airport card, so I should be all set, maaan I love this machine!!!

Took me 2 hours and a half to install Leopard (from USB stick as I did not have a dvd of that), wich was quite painfull (and louder than I remembered :D ), but once booted it seems quite snappy! (I will max it to 2 gb of ram soon) Cannot wait to try CS4 in it :D

Well there you have it !!!

Yeah, my wife threatened to smash them if I keep buying more.

I explain that I am rescuing them and protecting the earth by reducing landfill.:apple:

Awesome score! I’ve never owned an MDD, but I believe there were a couple of different PSU makes, one was noisier than the other. (someone else could confirm this?)

Maybe you got the noisy one.

You are also preserving history.... i mean ... you are doing it for the kids ;)!

The MDD was noisy back then, I just got used to silent computers :p.... but in this case, at least to me, noise is good.

Yes, if I buy enough of these dusty old Macs, we can run a museum and I’ll be the curator. She can be security and the kids can be in charge of decorating them with Spider-Man stickers

See then it is also a solid business decision! I am too around the number of Macs that can consider setting up a small museum :D.

I think I am around 25-30 Macs from the pre PowerPC and PowerPC era... from FDHD to 512K , LCII and Performas.... Emate, Powerbook 1400 and 520...some laser writers iMac G4, MDD, B&W G3 ..... may be we should team up :D

Any Idea on how I can connect the MDD to an HDMI monitor? I tried with this already (but as expected this not work)

Original DVI to VGA on the mac than vga to hdmi adapter on the monitor and a vga to vga cable to connect them... but no signal (probably becaus ethe HDMI to VGA is an out and not an in I guess.)

I use a little DVI to HDMI adapter like this and run a HDMI cable into the display, it works fine on the G4s.

I think both were equally noisy because of the fans and the shape of the power supply. There were Samsung and Acbell units and the Samsungs were reportedly more failure prone.

Apple offered a fan replacement kit for $25 in short order IIRR because of the racket the original shipped fans made but even the replacement ones were far from quiet.

Mine is an Acbell and I have already replaced the stock PSU fans with something a tad quieter. The main system fan is harder to replace since it needs to push 90cfm or more and quieter fans aren’t up to the task. A hard to find SilenX model can sometimes turn up in the US.

HDMI is basically DVI-D video with audio and a couple of other things added for consumer electronics. So a DVI-D to HDMI adaptor or cable will have you sorted.

Works fine on my PowerBook and G5. Leopard looks lovely on a 42" 1080p Plasma. :D

*gulp* I scored a “working condition unknown” blueberry iBook G3 clamshell during some middle of the night ‘baying.

I’ll have to hide it when it comes and camouflage it to look like the the Pismo. Now where did I put those permanent markers...

Look on the bright side. It’s fanless. Replace the noisy hard drive inside, turn the volume down so it doesn’t chime and she’ll never know it’s there.

I don't think the G3 iBook was fanless....

Yeah, the clamshells are fanless. I have a 32GB mSATA SSD lined up and ready.

The Pismo has a fan, but I've never heard it run. I put the same SSD config in and it is absolutely silent to run.

It is going to be hard for me to hide 3 G5 1 G4 and 1 G3 on Sunday.... and I do not think a marker can help me :p

Maybe a custom built cabinet to hide them all? Build it as a bar and you've got yourself the perfect solution. Beer on top, PPCs underneath.. wait that's beginning to sound like a bad idea now.
